Chapter 229 Mr. Abbott Started Chasing His Wife
Susanna felt a tug at her heart as she watched Maria's excitement about the baby.
If she disappeared later, Maria would be heartbroken and worried about her and the baby.
So, why not tell Maria the truth now? Why not admit she wasn't really pregnant and that it was all a ploy to get her consent for the surgery?
If Maria got mad, at least Susanna wouldn't feel so guilty when she left Lindwell.
"Susanna, what do you want to say?" Maria asked.
Facing Maria's kind eyes, Susanna's eyes welled up. "Grandma, actually, I've been lying to you. I'm not really..."
"Grandma!"
Before Susanna could finish, Aaron's deep voice cut in. He pushed open the hospital room door and walked in, stopping beside her.
Susanna's breath caught as she turned to see Aaron, looking sharp in a pinstripe suit. Her hands clenched into fists.
Just as she was about to spill the secret, Aaron's sudden appearance threw her off. What a pain! Shouldn't he be in some important meeting at the Abbott Group right now? Why show up at the hospital now?
Susanna felt a bit annoyed.
Maria glanced at Aaron, her tone indifferent. "You finally decided to come see me?"
Aaron replied calmly, "Grandma, I just saw you the day before yesterday."
"Coming alone is practically pointless," Maria scoffed, dismissing him. But when she looked at Susanna, her face softened with a smile. "Susanna, why don't you pick a style you like? I'll have someone buy it, so it's ready when the baby comes."
Maria's joy made Susanna squirm. As she reached for the tablet, it felt heavy with meaning.
"By the way, Susanna, what were you going to tell me just now?"
Holding the tablet, Susanna found she couldn't say what she had planned.
Aaron was watching her too, adding to the pressure.
In the end, Susanna just smiled and said, "It's nothing. I've been busy with the grand hall design, and it was a big success. I wanted to share the good news with you."
"That's great. Susanna, make sure to rest well. You've lost weight. Pregnancy is tough; don't make me worry about you," Maria suggested.
Susanna nodded. "I know. From now on, I'll just focus on my classes and preparing for exams."
At the mention of "exams," Aaron shot her a knowing look, thinking she must be getting ready for graduation.
Maria nodded happily. "After you graduate, take a good rest at home. Everything can wait until after the baby is born."
Susanna looked at the tablet screen, avoiding Maria's eyes. As she scrolled through baby cribs and strollers, frustration crept in. "Grandma, I just can't decide without seeing them in person."
"Is that so? Well, since Aaron is here today, why don't you both go to the store and pick something out?" Maria suggested.
Susanna immediately refused, "Grandma, he's super busy with work. He doesn't have time to go with me. I can handle it myself."
But then Aaron chimed in, "I actually have some free time later. We can shop for a couple of hours."
Susanna looked at him, stunned. Couldn't he see she was trying to save him the hassle? He used to hate being bossed around by Maria.
With Aaron's agreement, Susanna had no choice. She stood up and said, "Grandma, I'll visit you again soon."
"Go ahead. Just take pictures of what you pick out. If my legs get better, I'd love to go shopping with you and pick out things for the baby myself," Maria replied.
Aaron added, "Grandma, once you're better, there will be plenty of opportunities."
Susanna glanced at him, confused. Aaron still thought the baby wasn't his, so why say something that could cause misunderstandings?
They left the hospital room, walking side by side in silence.
Susanna felt the need to speak up, "It might be best to avoid mentioning the baby around Maria. Finding out the truth later will only hurt her."
Especially after she left Lindwell, she worried Maria's health wouldn't hold up.
Aaron's gaze was intense. "Now that you know, don't let her find out."
Don't let Maria find out? What did that mean?
Susanna stared at him, shocked. "Maria will find out eventually."
"If neither of us says anything, no one will know the baby's true origin. Then he will be the Abbott family's child," Aaron said coldly.
Susanna was puzzled. Did he mean that for Maria's sake, he would acknowledge the baby as his?
Realizing that dragging this out wouldn't help, she turned to him with determination. "Mr. Abbott, Maria's health has improved. Why don't we speed up the divorce?"
When Aaron heard "divorce," he refused with a stern face, "No, Grandma's health hasn't fully recovered. We need to wait."
Susanna was anxious, grabbing his arm. "I can't wait, and neither can the baby."
Aaron looked down at her. "Then have the baby. Do you think I can't support two children?"
"Are you crazy? This isn't your baby. Why would you want to raise them?" Susanna couldn't understand his behavior anymore.
Typically, a man as proud as Aaron would never accept his wife carrying another man's child.
Susanna had been misleading Aaron to get a quick divorce.
At first, Aaron was indeed very angry, but now he was saying he would take care of the baby.
Aaron glanced at her hand on his arm, his expression strained. With feigned composure, he said, "The baby's parentage doesn't matter. As long as you're an Abbott, the child is mine and the rightful heir.."
Susanna's mind finally unraveled. She was at a loss, unsure of her next move, especially since Aaron was adamant about keeping the baby and unwilling to consider divorce.
She caressed her slightly swollen belly and couldn't help but ask, "What if the baby is yours?"
