Chapter 590 People Are Complex
Susanna noticed Maud's face change when she brought up Maria.
Maud grabbed her coffee and said, "She's on her deathbed and still wants to lecture me? She knew about Aaron's past and kept it from me, just like her son. She's no better than the rest of the Abbott Family. What's there to talk about?"
Susanna had seen this coming. She had stopped Maria from seeing Maud just in time. Maud was all over the place emotionally. If Maria said something harsh, who knew how Maud would react? What if it upset Maria?
Susanna pulled a manila envelope from her bag and handed it to Maud. "I hope you won't regret your words after reading this."
"What's this?"
"It's your husband's will and the divorce papers from years ago."
Maud tore open the documents, her face turning pale with anger as she read. "That jerk! How could he do this to me? I'm his wife, why should everything go to his mistress's son?"
Susanna wasn't shocked by Maud's reaction. She went on, "When Aaron's dad brought him back to the Abbott Family, he made a will. If Maria hadn't stopped it, do you think you could have stayed in the Abbott Family peacefully?"
Maud stared at the documents, feeling utterly hopeless. After a long pause, Maud finally spoke. "So what?"
"Maria knew about this and covered it up. She knew you wouldn't have a good life if you were kicked out, so she let you stay in the Abbott Family. If it weren't for her, you know better than anyone what kind of life you'd be living now."
Maud's own family was unreliable, after all. Maud ripped up the divorce papers, her expression cold. "It's a good thing that man did so many bad things and died early."
Susanna continued, "Everything you have now is because of Maria. Neither Maria nor Aaron owes you anything."
"Did Maria send you to lecture me and tell me not to take a cent from the Abbott Family?"
Susanna's tone was indifferent. "Do you think you deserve to take all the money? Without Aaron, could you have stayed in the Abbott Family? You, Aaron, and even Maria, none of you knew about this matter. You're all victims." Aaron's father was the real culprit, but he was already dead.
Maud sneered, "What exactly are you trying to say?"
"Aaron never told Vivian the truth, and Ramond was only brought back to the Abbott Family to be taken care of. Now Ramond is with Owen. If you can pretend nothing happened, you'll always be Mrs. Abbott."
"Susanna, you're finally showing your true colors, aren't you? Why should I agree to this? Aaron owes me; he has to compensate me." Maud felt like her life had been a joke, and now she believed that money was the only reliable thing.
"Speaking of compensation, hasn't Aaron helped you solve problems and deal with your family's issues over the years? He's done enough. If you had an incompetent son, do you think you could live so comfortably?"
"You know nothing."
"I don't, but Aaron's innocent too. Before he knew the truth, he always treated you like his mom. Even after he found out, he never treated you badly. Last time you asked for the Abbott Family's money, he agreed. Who else would go that far?"Susanna figured Aaron must've been hurt by Maud's words. He seemed all glamorous, but his status was humble, and things with Maud had gotten awkward.
Maud was on the verge of tears. "But I treated him like my own son."
"You're his adoptive mom. Now, everyone related to Aaron is gone. You're the only one left by his side, so what are you afraid of?"
Maud wiped her tears. "I just feel like people can't be trusted."
Susanna continued, "Aaron keeps his word, but Maria also said if you keep pushing, she'll have to make the will public."
Maud immediately tore up the will. Susanna stayed calm. "What you have are just copies. Did you really think I was that foolish?"
Maud was furious. "Susanna, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you?"
"Think whatever you want. You can have money, but you can't have shares in the Abbott Group. I've delivered the message; the consequences are up to you." With that, Susanna left the café.
Actually, taking the money was the best option for Maud. If she had shares, her own family would definitely scheme against her, and she'd end up with nothing. Unfortunately, Maud didn't get that yet. With Aaron around, Maud's family wouldn't dare go too far.
After dealing with this, Susanna was about to take the kids to the hospital when she found out that Aaron had already sent a driver to get them.
She went straight to the hospital, where Charles and Lillian were still with Maria. She first went to the adjacent room, where Aaron was lying in bed with a computer in front of him.
The secretary approached her and said, "Please persuade Mr. Abbott. He hasn't eaten since yesterday and has been working non-stop."
Susanna frowned. "Bring some food over." She walked into the ward. Aaron paused but kept looking at his computer.
Soon, the secretary brought the food. Susanna looked at him. "Vivian's been caught, and Maria's health is improving."
"Are you going back to Novaria?" Aaron looked up at her, his eyes calm and emotionless.
Susanna pursed her lips. "What else?"
The room fell silent. Aaron handed her a document. "This is a proposal for a hotel collaboration. It might be useful to you."
Susanna didn't take it. "I never said I wanted to work with you."
"This is a research proposal for hotel development in Lindwell. Reading it can help you avoid many problems. Consider it a gift of compensation from me."
Susanna took the document. "Then eat your meal first. If you die suddenly, no one here will give me any respect." She moved Aaron's computer aside and placed the food in front of him.
At that moment, a woman's voice came from the computer. "Mr. Abbott, the meeting isn't over yet."
Susanna looked directly at the computer screen. "He needs to eat. If it's not urgent, discuss it later."
The woman asked, "Who are you?"
