Chapter 565 The Higher One Climbed, the Harder They Fell
Susanna glanced up and saw Owen heading her way. She flashed a knowing smile. "Looks like Ms. Nguyen isn't too thrilled to see me."
Owen replied, "Ms. Jones, I'm really sorry about that. Vivian's just being childish. Please bear with her."
Susanna didn't buy it. "But Ms. Nguyen is in her thirties, not a toddler. Do I really need to put up with her? People might start thinking she's got some kind of intellectual issue."
Vivian snapped, "Who do you think you are, questioning my intelligence?"
"Vivian, watch your tone! Apologize to Ms. Jones right now. She's a special guest I invited today. How can you talk to her like that?" Owen felt a bit let down by Vivian. He thought she was smart, but she couldn't even manage to get along with people.
"Dad, I didn't invite her to the banquet." Vivian had checked the guest list beforehand. She needed to know who was coming so she could gauge the status of the Richardson family's friends and relatives, which would be useful for her later.
After going through the list, Vivian noticed the Jones family wasn't on it. She felt a bit smug because every time Susanna showed up, she messed up her plans.
Owen said, "Ms. Nguyen is a special guest I invited personally, without an invitation card. Got a problem with that?"
Vivian definitely had a problem with it. Today was supposed to be her big day, and she didn't want it to be ruined. So when she saw Susanna earlier, she had a bad feeling and wanted her gone.
But Vivian didn't dare say anything. She still relied on Owen for her livelihood. Once Ramond secured his place in the Richardson family and Owen got older, she could finally get her revenge. So Vivian had to suck it up. After years of patience, she finally had her chance, and she wasn't about to blow it.
Vivian quickly changed her tune and said to Susanna, "I'm sorry, Ms. Jones. I spoke out of turn earlier. Please don't take it to heart. It's an honor to have you at today's banquet. How could I not welcome you? I was just a bit overwhelmed."
Owen, seeing this, nodded approvingly and went back to entertaining the guests. Susanna stepped forward and patted Vivian on the shoulder. "Not bad, your self-control is improving. Keep up the act and don't slip up."
Vivian's face twisted. "What do you mean? What are you planning?"
"Why so jumpy? Feeling guilty about something?" With that, Susanna walked away, leaving Vivian stewing. The real drama hadn't even started yet, and she wasn't the main character.
Vivian watched Susanna's retreating figure, a sense of dread creeping in. But she couldn't figure out what Susanna might do.
After all, Amelia had already been kicked out, and she heard Owen was divorcing Paige. If Owen divorced, it would just be her and Ramond left with Owen. So, the property Owen left behind would be hers and Ramond's.
Could Amelia have something up her sleeve? No way. As long as Owen wanted to acknowledge Ramond, nothing Amelia did would matter. After all, Amelia's family, with their high and mighty attitudes, would never tolerate such things happening.
So Paige would definitely hire a lawyer to file for divorce, which was very beneficial for Vivian. She couldn't think of any other hidden issues.
Susanna walked to the side and checked the layout of the entire banquet, making sure everything was perfect. After all, today's birthday theme was her design, specifically for the kids.
Guests at the banquet might see it and decide to book the same themed hall at the Velvet Sky Ballroom Hotel for their children's birthdays in the future.
Soon, Vivian, holding Ramond's hand, followed Owen with a proud look on her face. Susanna thought that today must be the most glorious moment in Vivian's life. After so much scheming, she had finally secured her position.
But the higher some people climbed, the harder they fell. If someone never got something, they only suffered the pain of unfulfilled desires. But once they got it and then lost it, that pain was a hundred times worse.
Owen took the microphone and said a few words of thanks to everyone, then glanced at Ramond beside him and said, "We haven't had a child in our family for years. Vivian's son caught my eye, so from today on, this child will take the Richardson name and be a part of the Richardson family. He will be my grandson."
After Owen finished speaking, the room erupted in applause. Vivian finally showed a relieved expression. She had done it. She could almost imagine Ramond growing up and inheriting all of Owen's estate. By then, she would be wealthy and no longer looked down upon.
"Wait." At this moment, Amelia's voice rang out, and everyone turned to the entrance of the banquet.
Amelia walked in wearing a black evening gown, with minimal makeup and just red lipstick, but she exuded a powerful aura.
Seeing Amelia, Susanna's eyes flashed with satisfaction. This girl had finally grown up.
After Amelia appeared, the guests began to whisper among themselves. After all, they couldn't openly discuss Owen's private matters, but deep down, everyone knew what was really going on. Every wealthy family had its dark secrets.
Vivian frowned when she saw Amelia. Susanna's earlier words had made her a bit scared. Now that Amelia had appeared, Vivian was unhappy. What was Amelia doing here? However, Vivian put on a smile and said to Owen, "Dad, Amelia is here."
Owen's expression also turned sour. After all, he had found out that Amelia had exposed Vivian's illegitimate daughter status, which had caused him some trouble and was used by competitors to attack him. Fortunately, he reacted quickly, but the incident had left a significant impact. Because of this, he was very disappointed in Amelia.
Now Amelia suddenly appeared in a black dress, and he didn't know what she was planning. Owen looked at Amelia and lowered his voice. "What are you trying to do? I warn you, don't act rashly."
Amelia smiled. "Dad, why are you so nervous? I'm here to celebrate Ramond's birthday."
When Vivian heard Amelia's words, something flashed in her mind, but she couldn't grasp it. Still, she felt a strong sense of crisis.
