Chapter 534 Because I Am the Boss
Elaine shot back, "Why do you think it can't work? Philly isn't owned by your Jones Family."
Maud chimed in, "Elaine, we can talk about your birthday party after we finalize the collaboration. No rush, your birthday's still a bit away."
Elaine felt pissed and uneasy. She'd been promised a setup, but Susanna's sudden meddling and threat to snitch made the manager backtrack.
She figured Susanna was just jealous.
Elaine glared at Susanna. "Happy now? But don't get too smug. Once the hotel teams up with us, I can still get my birthday party there. Let's see you stop that."
"Dream on, Elaine. There's no way they'll throw a party for you."
"Big words, Susanna. You think you own the Velvet Sky Ballroom? Acting all high and mighty like you're the boss."
"Why can't I be the owner?"
"You? The owner? Give me a break. If you're gonna lie, at least make it believable."
Amelia, standing nearby, looked shocked and glanced at Susanna a few times. Actually, it wasn't totally impossible.
The original investor in the Velvet Sky Ballroom had ties to the Jones Family. But the owner had never shown their face, making everyone think it might be someone from the Jones Family keeping a low profile.
Since the investor was Edward, people guessed the Velvet Sky Ballroom was opened by one of his mistresses, hidden to avoid his wife's wrath.
But if Susanna was the secret owner, it all added up.
Amelia never thought that Susanna, who always seemed so laid-back, was actually the owner of the Velvet Sky Ballroom.
She'd heard Susanna liked landscape design and had won awards, so maybe the rumors were true. The unique designs of the Velvet Sky Ballroom were probably Susanna's work.
The place was a hit because of its unique design.
So, Susanna was pretty impressive after all.
Susanna said calmly, "What do I have to pretend about?"
Elaine snapped, "You say you're the owner, but why didn't the manager recognize you?"
"He's just an acting manager and hasn't met me yet. That's normal."
Elaine sneered, "You love pretending. If you're the owner, someone here must know."
"They don't recognize me because I've kept a low profile and never showed up in front of my employees."
She'd lost her memory before and needed to stay hidden to avoid being found by Aaron.
So, she always let others run her businesses, staying behind the scenes.
"Enough, Susanna. Even lies have limits. I don't believe no one here knows the owner of the Velvet Sky Ballroom. If anyone does, they can call you out right now." Elaine didn't buy a word Susanna said.
Amelia chimed in, "Susanna might not be lying. The owner's always been a mystery, and even I didn't know it was Susanna. She's done a great job keeping it under wraps."
Susanna shrugged. "I've had my reasons for keeping it quiet."
Elaine rolled her eyes. "You two are in cahoots. I don't buy that Susanna owns the Velvet Sky Ballroom. She's just a lazy bum."
Susanna shot back, "Just because you can't do it doesn't mean others can't."
Maud gave Susanna a long look. "You say you're the owner. How can you prove it? By calling the former manager Mike? But who can prove the person you call is really Mike?"
Susanna nodded. "Good point, but I don't need to prove anything to you. It's a waste of my time, and I've got a lot to handle tonight."
With that, she turned and walked away, needing to call someone to deal with the acting manager.
Tonight's investment banquet couldn't afford any slip-ups, and she had no time to waste on Elaine.
Amelia said, "Susanna, you're right. No need to waste time on irrelevant people."
Elaine, not ready to give up, took a few steps forward, "Who's irrelevant? Susanna's just guilty and can't prove she's the owner, so she's making an excuse to leave. But when all the guests arrive, the real owner will show up and expose her lie. Let's see how she explains then."
Maud, looking indifferent, adjusted her coat, "Elaine, we don't need to waste time on them either. The guests should be arriving, and you should go greet them."
Elaine nodded.
After they left, Susanna immediately pulled out her phone and called her secretary, "What's up with that acting manager? Replace him now."
The secretary asked respectfully, "Ms. Jones, what happened?"
"He promised the Abbott Family to prioritize their event. If word gets out, tonight's investment banquet will be a disaster."
"Got it, Ms. Jones. I'll handle it right away and get someone new for tonight's banquet."
Susanna hung up, fuming, and continued to check the banquet venue.
The food placement issue had been sorted, and everything else seemed fine, letting her relax a bit.
Looking up, Susanna saw Maud and Elaine standing with a few people, including a guy around their age. It looked like a matchmaking setup.
So that's why Maud brought Elaine to tonight's investment banquet.
At that moment, Amelia walked up to her. "I just took a look around. Elaine's definitely here for a matchmaking meeting. It's like they're selling her off. That family's rich, but the guy's a gambler and a womanizer. No respectable family in Philly wants to marry into them, but they have high standards and only want to marry into wealthy families. Although Elaine isn't much, people in Philly don't know her background. They just know she's Aaron's cousin, which is enough for them to latch onto."
"But from what I know, Maud isn't that kind-hearted. Why would she introduce such people to Elaine?"
