Chapter 8 Didn't Expect You to Be So Vicious

Susanna looked a bit troubled and hesitated. "Tonight? I already have plans with a friend."

Edward quickly reassured her, "It's okay, we'll wait for you. We've waited this long, a little more time won't hurt."

Seeing the cautious look on Edward's face, Susanna pursed her lips and said, "I'll come back early."

Edward ruffled her hair gently and asked, "Do you have enough money for dinner with your friends?"

Susanna stiffened a bit, not used to Edward's affectionate gesture, and took a step back. "Yes, I have got money," she replied somewhat awkwardly.

With that, she turned and headed to her room to change clothes. Madison followed her in and asked quietly, "Are you going to the Abbott family?"

Susanna nodded. "Maria has been very good to me. No matter what's happened, I owe her an explanation."

"Good to you? Do you think putting you in this position is good? Susanna, I think you should distance yourself from them and cut ties altogether! Aaron should have thought about the consequences," Madison said with concern.

Susanna was surprised by Madison's strong opposition to her visiting the Abbott family, feeling a bit conflicted. "Madison, don't say that. If it weren't for Maria, we wouldn't have found a hospital for Vincent or kept him going this long. And she's really looked out for me these past three years. She has been taking good care of me these years. So I think it's best if I explain things to Maria."

Hearing Vincent's name brought tears to Madison's eyes. "Susanna, we've dragged you into this. It's our fault."

Susanna gently patted Madison's back. "Madison, don't say that. If it weren't for you saving me back then, I would have starved to death. I wouldn't even have had this chance to reunite with Edward. Everything I do for you is what I should be doing."

Touched, Madison nodded and then seemed to remember something. "Oh, by the way, I haven't told Edward about your marriage and divorce."

"Please keep it that way. I'm afraid Edward will cause trouble for Aaron if he finds out," Susanna remarked.

Madison nodded, fighting back tears. "No one will ever hurt you again. You don't have to worry about them anymore."

After changing her clothes, Susanna gently touched her belly, resolved to start a new life with her baby.

When she arrived at the hotel entrance, she saw that Edward had arranged a car for her. Without protesting, she got in and waved to Edward. Her lips curved into a small smile, feeling the warmth of finally having found her family.

Susanna's thoughts were tangled as the car drove her to the Abbott Mansion. She worried about how to broach the subject of divorce with Maria but couldn't come up with a plan. As she hesitated at the entrance to the mansion, a young woman approached her with a hostile expression.

"Susanna, you're actually taking a cab this time? Hurry up and get to the kitchen. Make my favorite New England cuisine."

Susanna's demeanor changed from her usual compliance. She firmly responded, "Grandma invited me here for dinner, not to be a cook."

Elaine was initially taken aback but quickly became furious. She stormed off to Maud Abbott and complained, "Aunt Maud, I told Susanna to cook, and she refused! She even said she's a guest invited for dinner, not a servant!"

Maud gave Susanna a cold look. "Susanna, if you're not going to cook, what are you even doing here? Besides spending the Abbott family's money, what else can you do? Asking you to make dinner is the least we can expect from you."

Susanna endured the harsh words, but thoughts of her six amazing brothers buoyed her spirits. She wasn't alone anymore. With a clever retort, she said, "Maria invited me. If she wants me to cook, she'll tell me herself. Why don't you wait and say that when she gets here? Let's see if she agrees with you."

Maud snapped, "Don't think you can fool Maria with your sweet talk and act like you have all the power. Let me tell you, you have no say here!"

Susanna feigned innocence. "Whether I have a say or not isn't up to you. I'm free now, no longer Aaron's wife. But you're still Maria's daughter-in-law. Watch your words."

Maud was left speechless, pointing angrily at Susanna.

Just then, Susanna noticed Erica sitting on the couch, which surprised her. Elaine quickly tried to calm things down. "Aunt Maud, don't get upset. It's not worth ruining your health over someone so despicable. We'll deal with her when Aaron gets back!"

Susanna was used to such insults and didn't care. She glanced at Erica on the couch, not even bothering to greet her, and asked the maid where Maria was.

The maid replied, "Mrs. Maria Abbott is in her room, she is probably still asleep."

Susanna asked worriedly, "Is Grandma not feeling well lately?"

Elaine, noticing Susanna's disregard, flaunted the expensive gifts Erica had brought and criticized Susanna for coming empty-handed. "Susanna, look at all the nice things Erica brought. And you? You showed up with nothing. Don't you know basic manners? How rude!"

Erica pretended to be modest. "Elaine, they aren't that special, just ordinary ones."

Elaine chimed in, "Erica, you know, for people as wealthy as us, these might seem ordinary. But for those who don't have money, they could never hope to earn this much in a lifetime. That's why some people would do anything to marry into the Abbott family."

Susanna scoffed and ignored them, heading to the kitchen to prepare Maria's favorite soup.

Erica followed her, taunting, "Susanna, do you think making soup will get Maria to speak up for you? Let me tell you, I've brought a top heart surgery specialist to operate on her. Once the surgery is successful, she won't oppose my marriage to Aaron."

Susanna replied calmly, "That's good. I hope she will recover soon."

Erica suddenly pushed the pot. "Don't get cocky!"

The pot tipped towards Susanna.

"Watch out!" A man rushed in. Susanna turned to see Aaron, but he was protecting Erica. The next second, the boiling soup spilled on Susanna's hand. The pain wasn't as bad as the hurt in her heart.

Erica whimpered in Aaron's arms, "Aaron, my hand got burned. It hurts so much. But don't blame her; she probably didn't mean it."

Susanna's eyes flashed with sarcasm, and she didn't even turn around.

The next moment, Aaron grabbed her arm. "Susanna, I didn't expect you to be so..." He looked down and saw her hand covered in blisters, red and glaring. His words caught in his throat, and he pressed his lips together, unable to finish his sentence.

Susanna looked up, anger in her eyes. "You didn't expect me to be what?"

Maud stormed over, accusing, "Susanna, I didn't expect you to be so vicious, deliberately hurting Ms. Jones!"

Susanna remained calm. "No, it wasn't an accident. Erica pushed the pot on purpose. She did it intentionally!"
