Chapter 286 What Are You Doing Here?
After Susanna finished her dessert, she took a sip of water and noticed Aaron staring at her.
His intense gaze made her feel shy, so she looked down.
"It's getting late, Mr. Abbott. Please leave," she said, avoiding eye contact.
Aaron finally stood up, his tall frame casting a shadow over her. The room felt cramped with him standing there, his expression unreadable.
Susanna felt uneasy and walked to the door, opening it without a word.
Aaron walked towards her, blocking the narrow doorway.
She looked up, confused. Just as she was about to step aside, he spoke, "Take the exam seriously."
"What?" Susanna mumbled, surprised. "I'll work hard without your reminder."
As Aaron left, Susanna closed the door and returned to the sofa, feeling a mix of emotions. Madison came out and asked, "Did Mr. Abbott leave?"
"Yes, he did," Susanna replied.
"Why was he here? I was startled when I saw him at the door. I hope he's not here to cause trouble for you?" Madison asked.
"He brought some dessert from Maria," Susanna said, handing a piece to Madison. Despite everything, Maria had always been kind to her.
"Susanna, Maria's event is next weekend, right?" Madison asked.
"Yes," Susanna confirmed. Maria had agreed to wait until after Susanna's exams to hold the event.
"Maria is good to you, but now that you've found your family and you're more confident, the Abbott family won't bully you anymore. Do you still want to go back?" Madison asked sincerely.
"Why would you say that?" Susanna was surprised by the question.
"You married into the Abbott family because you liked Mr. Abbott. You're sentimental; it's hard to forget. I supported your divorce because I didn't want you to be bullied. Now, who would dare to bully you?" Madison explained.
Susanna couldn't help but laugh and cry., "Madison, I've already divorced him."
"But Maria still likes you, and your family's situation has improved. If you still like Mr. Abbott, you could consider it. I noticed his attitude towards you wasn't as cold this time," Madison said.
"Madison, let's drop it," Susanna interrupted. "I've decided to go back to Novaria with my brothers. I'm not thinking about remarriage."
"Alright, I respect that. But remember, a second marriage is different. Mr. Abbott's a good catch; I'm just looking out for you," Madison said before heading to her room.
Susanna understood Madison's concern. To Madison, returning to the Abbott family might seem like the safest bet for a divorced woman.
But Madison didn't know Susanna's brothers were from the prestigious Jones family in Novaria. Plus, Susanna was secretly pregnant with Aaron's child.
She touched her belly, eyes filled with determination.
She knew Aaron's feelings for her were lukewarm at best.
His commitment during their three-year marriage was for Maria's sake. His recent change in behavior was likely due to guilt. Deep down, she knew Aaron never truly loved her.
Her eyes stung with unshed tears. She had endured so much pain three years ago and had no intention of going back. If she remarried, it would be to someone who genuinely cared for her.
The next morning, Susanna found Brian, Austin, and Justin at her place.
"Justin, aren't you busy filming? How come you're here?" she asked, surprised.
"I took a night flight to see you off to your exam. I'll head back to filming afterward," Justin replied with a smile.
After breakfast, Susanna rode with her brothers to the school.
Before she got out, Austin nervously asked, "Do you have everything you need for the exam?"
Brian added, "We'll be waiting outside. If you need anything, call us."
"Got it," Susanna said, feeling uplifted by their support. She walked into the school with a lighter heart.
Not far away, a car was hidden in the shadows.
Aaron watched Susanna walk into the school before turning away. "Let's go."
As the car started, he looked at the passenger seat. "Any updates from the investigator?"
Tyler replied, "His name is Michael, an obstetrician in Novaria. Quite well-known."
"Obstetrician?"
Aaron thought about Michael, the doctor he had seen earlier.
Was he the one the Jones family chose for Susanna? A male doctor?
A flash of displeasure crossed Aaron's face. Couldn't they find a female obstetrician?
He couldn't stand the thought of another man being close to Susanna, let alone her marrying someone else. The idea made him squirm.
"Mr. Abbott, there's more," Tyler said.
Aaron rubbed his temples. "Go on."
"Mrs. Abbott's visa is done, and she's booked a flight to Novaria for next week," Tyler reported.
"Next week?"
Aaron gripped the documents tightly. Next week was Maria's event. Was Susanna planning to leave right after?
His heart felt like it was being squeezed, making it hard to breathe.
