Chapter 516 The Truth
After Susanna finished talking, she noticed Aaron's face change.
Everyone thought Maria's tumble down the stairs years ago was because of a jealous classmate.
But now that her memory was back, something felt off about the whole thing.
She was convinced the real culprit was still out there.
Aaron's lips tightened. "Who do you think did it?"
"Do you also think Wendy isn't the one?" Susanna thought everyone was sure Wendy did it, but she didn't expect Aaron to have doubts too.
Aaron's voice was deep. "There were too many weird things back then. The culprit was caught too quickly, and it seemed too perfect. But Grandma stayed in a coma, you were hidden away, and Wendy went crazy in prison. I couldn't get any truth out of her."
"You said Wendy went mad?" Susanna couldn't believe it. "That's impossible."
The Wendy she remembered was also an orphan. They had become close friends because of their similar backgrounds.
But she hadn't expected Wendy to be swayed by Erica, to betray her and team up with Erica to take her place.
Unfortunately, the Jones Family saw through their plan and weren't fooled.
Wendy ended up paying the price and got expelled from school.
Susanna said suspiciously, "But Wendy getting a job at the Abbott Mansion isn't something just anyone could do. Real life isn't like a TV drama; it's not that simple. So, someone must have helped her, which means this matter is connected to others."
Susanna looked at Aaron, hoping he had some answers.
He must have looked into this.
Aaron said, "I checked how Wendy got into the Abbott Mansion. At that time, Grandma was hosting a banquet and needed to hire people. Wendy got the job through a recommendation from the orphanage."
"That's it?"
"Yeah, nothing unusual. Grandma often donated to welfare homes and orphanages, and the Abbott Family had other servants who were orphans."
Susanna thought about her own orphan status back then. Maria was indeed a kind person who didn't look down on her because of her background and even allowed her to marry Aaron.
She frowned. "So Wendy took advantage of Maria's love for charity?"
Usually, servants in wealthy families weren't just anyone.
But Maria was different; she loved doing charity, which gave Wendy this opportunity.
If it weren't for that, Wendy wouldn't have had the chance to get close to the Abbott Family, let alone harm Maria.
Aaron's expression wasn't good either. "As much as I hate to admit it, that's true."
"These days, good people always face more hardships than bad people, who seem to live unscathed." A hint of sarcasm flashed in Susanna's eyes.
Aaron stared at her. "Do you know who the culprit is?"
Susanna said, "I have a guess, but I'm not sure yet, and I don't have direct evidence."
She looked at Aaron. "When I went to Maria's room, there was no one there. But then I was hit on the head from behind and passed out. Before I lost consciousness, I saw that person wearing high heels."
"A woman?"
"Yeah, and she had a butterfly tattoo on her ankle."
After getting her memory back, Susanna had looked into Vivian's ankle tattoo, thinking she had found a key piece of evidence.
But she later found out that the tattoo was pretty common and popular back then.
She hadn't seen the culprit's face, and a memory of a tattoo wasn't solid proof.
Vivian now had Owen backing her up and would never admit to this easily.
Aaron said coldly, "I'll get someone to check who in the Abbott Mansion had a butterfly tattoo on their ankle back then."
Susanna looked at Aaron, surprised. "You need to investigate this?"
Aaron replied seriously, "Don't worry. I suspected there might be other culprits back then, so I recorded all the guests and servants present at the Abbott Mansion. We can investigate anytime."
"You were thorough in your records, but that's not what I meant. It's been five years, and you never noticed Vivian's ankle tattoo?"
Even before regaining her memory, Susanna had seen Vivian's ankle tattoo.
She couldn't believe Aaron hadn't noticed that.
Aaron was stunned. "You're saying Vivian has a tattoo on her ankle?"
"Yeah, you didn't know?"
"Why would I pay attention to what's on her ankle?"
Aaron's righteous tone left her speechless.
Susanna looked at Aaron with a half-smile. As expected, Aaron was as infuriating as ever.
Aaron continued, "I've never had anything with Vivian. We hardly ever see each other, and I don't pay attention to her."
"You don't need to explain so much to me. I don't care about your business with Vivian."
"Are you sure that tattoo is the one on Vivian's ankle?"
Susanna looked up. "What do you mean? Do you think I'm falsely accusing her?"
"Not at all. If we can confirm it, I can immediately arrange for her arrest and make her pay for what she did!"
Aaron's voice turned icy as he said this.
He had suspected Vivian before.
After all, the culprit was found by Vivian, but no evidence was found later.
Susanna said, "It won't be that easy. I investigated that tattoo, and it's very common. Using it as direct evidence isn't strong enough. We need to find other evidence or witnesses."
Aaron clearly knew the evidence was insufficient.
He frowned. "How could Vivian pull this off? Grandma never did her any harm."
"You don't understand women or Vivian. Maria indeed didn't wrong her, but she would never allow Vivian to return to the Abbott Family."
Aaron was silent for a moment. "That's right. Five years ago, Vivian came to visit, and Grandma refused her visit and didn't allow her to stay in Lindwell."
"So, for Vivian to stay, she had to get rid of Maria. Wendy's appearance gave her the perfect opportunity to act. Kill with a borrowed knife."
Thinking about what Vivian did back then made Susanna's scalp tingle.
If she had been harmed back then, Vivian might have succeeded.
Susanna looked at Aaron. "I heard you're planning to work with Owen?"
