Chapter 287 Mr. Abbott Finally Realizes His Heart
After the exam, Susanna left the classroom, feeling wiped out. She'd spent the whole day on it and was totally exhausted.
Being pregnant made sitting for long periods really uncomfortable. Luckily, the baby wasn't due soon, so she could manage for now.
"Susanna."
Austin and Brian hurried over. Austin held her arm. "You okay? If you feel off, tell me right away."
"I'm fine, just tired and hungry."
Susanna knew Austin was worried about the baby, but the baby seemed to understand the importance of the exam and had been calm today.
Brian sighed in relief. "Now that the exam's over, let's treat ourselves. How about a nice dinner to celebrate?"
"Sure."
Susanna followed her brothers out of the school and saw Michael in the car. She greeted him, "Michael."
She knew why Austin had Michael wait for her; he was genuinely concerned about the baby.
Michael, usually stoic, softened a bit when he heard her.
The four of them got into the car and left the school.
Nearby, someone snapped a photo and sent it to their boss.
Aaron was taking a break after a meeting when Tyler approached with a phone. "Mr. Abbott, news from the school."
Aaron glanced at the photo: Susanna getting into the car with her brothers, smiling brightly. She looked adorable with her family.
But as Aaron looked closer at the driver, his eyes narrowed. Wasn't that Michael?
He put down the phone, feeling gloomy. Her family had thought of everything, even having an obstetrician waiting outside. He didn't need to worry!
She had even booked a flight to leave Novaria next week, but when he visited her yesterday, she hadn't mentioned it.
Aaron suddenly lost interest in work. Restless, he paced around the office and finally called Sam. "Got time? Let's grab a drink!"
Sam was surprised by the call. "You want to drink? Last time it was about Susanna. Is it her again?"
"Cut the crap, are you coming or not?"
"Just text me the address. If you're inviting, I'll be there.."
When Sam arrived at their usual spot, he saw Aaron had tossed his suit aside, his shirt loose, looking dejected and melancholic.
"You wouldn't call me for no reason. What's up?" Sam asked, concerned.
Aaron downed his wine, eyes bloodshot. "Susanna's leaving next week."
"Next week? But isn't Maria's party this weekend? So she's leaving right after?" Sam was shocked.
Seeing Aaron's state, Sam said, "What do you mean? We told you to win her back, but you still got divorced. I thought you gave up!"
"I thought I could too, but I don't want to let her go!" Aaron's eyes were resolute. He was more certain than ever that he didn't want to lose her!
Sam sat next to Aaron and said, "If you'd gone after her before she reunited with her family, you might've had a shot. You're the richest guy in Lindwell; what woman could resist? But you missed that chance!"
Aaron's lips tightened. "What do you mean?"
"Now Susanna's the Jones family heir in Novaria, with six brothers backing her. She doesn't need anything. What do you have to offer to win her back?" Sam analyzed.
Aaron frowned. "Even if she hadn't found her family, she wasn't a gold-digger."
He had misunderstood her all along.
"I know, but now she's the Jones heir. If you want her back, there's only one way."
Aaron looked up, eyes urgent.
Sam answered, "With your sincerity."
"Sincerity?"
Aaron reclined on the sofa, a mix of idleness and intensity. "Can people like us really be sincere?"
"If you don't love Susanna and open your heart, keeping her will be tough. You won't even pass her brothers' tests," Sam remarked.
Aaron felt frustrated. "But don't you think love is elusive?"
"Exactly, which is why I was surprised when you fell for Susanna. At first, I thought you just weren't used to her leaving, but now it seems you really have feelings for her."
Sam was incredulous. "But Susanna isn't a top beauty, and her figure is average."
"And she's pregnant," Aaron added.
"Right, she's pregnant. Wait, what? She's pregnant?" Sam almost choked on his wine. "She's pregnant! Is it your child?"
"I'm not sure," Aaron murmured into his glass, memories swirling of her confessing to Michael that the baby wasn't his.
A pang of bitterness pierced through him. 'Why couldn't it have been mine?' he thought.
At that moment, he actually hoped the baby was his, so he would have a reason to keep Susanna.
Sam was puzzled. "Susanna is pregnant, and you don't know if the baby is yours. That means it probably isn't."
Aaron's eyes were sharp. "Why do you say that?"
"If the baby were yours, before she found her family, when she had nothing, how could she not stay in the Abbott family as Mrs. Abbott? Any normal woman would know what choice to make. But she kept it from you, which means she felt guilty!"
Aaron looked up at the ceiling. "Stop talking."
"Listen to my analysis. If Susanna wasn't feeling guilty, why would she agree to the divorce so readily when you proposed it? And not ask for a penny?" Sam continued.
"Please stop analyzing." Aaron felt like his heart had been stabbed twice; it was very painful.
Sam sensed something was off. "You know the baby might not be yours, and you still want to win Susanna back? Are you crazy? Do you want to be a father?"
"I don't have any expectations for the child. It doesn't matter whose it is. As long as it grows up in the Abbott family, it will be an Abbott," Aaron said calmly.
Sam's mouth twitched. "I never realized you had such a hobby."
As soon as he finished speaking, Aaron kicked him. "Get lost!"
Sam said seriously, "Aaron, answer me honestly. Have you fallen in love with Susanna?"
