Chapter 513 The Secret He Bears
Susanna smirked, "You want a daughter-in-law with status, not an orphan like me."
"Not exactly. I married Aaron's dad through a family deal. He had a woman he loved, but the Abbott Family didn't approve of her. They picked our family instead. I thought he'd come back after getting tired of her, but he never did. He even had an illegitimate kid with her."
What Maud didn't expect was that he wanted to leave the company's assets to that illegitimate kid.
If Aaron wasn't so outstanding, everything might've gone to that kid!
Maud felt a deep hatred at that moment.
Susanna stayed quiet.
Maud went on, "I want my son to find a woman of equal status. I don't want him making the same mistakes his dad did."
Susanna glanced awkwardly at Aaron.
Aaron had never mentioned any of this before.
Maud looked at Aaron. "So, did you really say you'd raise Ramond as the heir?"
"Of course not. I never planned for him to inherit the Abbott Group. That was all Vivian's idea; she misled you."
Maud sneered, "How do I know if you're telling the truth? You've always been so independent, never discussing anything with me, always thinking I'm holding you back. You've kept this from me for years. Do you think I could treat Ramond like my own grandson?"
"I never acknowledged Ramond as my child. You chose to believe Vivian. I told you not to get too close to her."
"Fine, it's all my fault." Maud slapped Aaron and left the room, her steps a bit shaky.
Susanna looked at Aaron, half of his face hidden in the shadows, making it hard to read his expression.
She spoke softly, "Are you not telling Maud the truth?"
Aaron's explanation seemed fine, but something felt off.
Given Aaron's character, even if there was a will, he would've found a way to deal with Vivian. There had to be a bigger reason.
Aaron turned to her, his gaze heavy. "Only my grandmother and I know this secret."
Susanna noticed Aaron's sad and repressed expression.
She turned her head. "Don't tell me. I'm not interested in your secrets."
The next second, Aaron walked up to her, his voice hoarse, "Actually, I'm also an illegitimate child. My mom's child died during childbirth, and she couldn't have any more kids. My dad lied to her and brought the other woman's child back."
Hearing this, Susanna felt her heart tighten. She never expected the truth to be like this.
Aaron was also an illegitimate child?
Susanna hesitated, "Does Maria know about this too?"
In her mind, Maria didn't seem like that kind of person.
"Grandma found out later. She made my dad swear I'd only ever be my mom's child and that the mistress could never know I was brought into the Abbott Family."
Aaron's expression was hard to read, his eyes showing a rare vulnerability.
Susanna couldn't stand his gaze and turned to leave, but Aaron pulled her into his arms.
"Aaron, what are you doing?"
"Don't go, stay with me for a while."
"Let go of me."
"Just for a while."
Aaron's pleading voice reached Susanna's ears. She struggled a bit but couldn't break free, so she let him hold her.
Susanna's cheek rested against his chest, and she could hear his strong heartbeat.
She lowered her eyelids slightly. In truth, she felt unfamiliar with Aaron's embrace.
But as she leaned into his arms, Susanna couldn't control her racing heart, with memories of their five-year marriage flooding back.
She thought she had long forgotten those five years with the Abbott Family.
But now, those memories resurfaced in her mind.
As Susanna was lost in thought, Aaron's deep voice came to her ears, "I've had a smooth life since I was a kid, and nothing could trouble me. But when my dad passed away, I learned about my identity. Grandma told me the truth. But I didn't go looking for that woman; I pretended not to know anything."
Susanna didn't say anything after hearing his words.
She had always thought Aaron was always high and mighty, never expecting his background to be so secretive.
Aaron rested his head on her shoulder and spoke in a muffled voice, "Since then, I've always been resistant to the idea of love and marriage. I hated my identity, but I could never escape it. I originally planned never to marry in this lifetime."
Susanna said, "Because Grandma forced you to marry me."
"Yes, I didn't want to let her down. Back then, I was pretty closed off emotionally, so I treated you badly and was always distant. It wasn't personal; I would've been like that with anyone."
Susanna knew that Aaron married her back then entirely because of Maria.
But she didn't expect Aaron to be in such a conflicted state at that time.
Susanna thought for a moment and said, "You can't be blamed for this. And you don't need to tell Maud the truth."
After all, it was better if Maud didn't know about this.
Maud was already so devastated just now. If she knew Aaron wasn't her biological child, she might go mad in the future.
After she finished speaking, Aaron looked down at her, his gaze deep and intense.
Susanna instinctively avoided his eyes. "Why are you looking at me like that? I won't tell anyone this secret."
Aaron's Adam's apple moved slightly. "So ever since I found out you were from the Jones Family, I started feeling inferior."
