Chapter 589 What's Wrong with Him

Finally, Susanna made it to Aaron's hospital room and saw him lying there, looking totally out of it. She walked over with some food. "Doc says you're wiped out. You gotta eat and rest more, or you might just drop dead."

Aaron heard her and looked up, seeing her sitting next to him. His lips barely moved. "What did you say to Vivian?"

"Just gave her a hard time and made sure she knows prison won't be a picnic." Susanna put the food in front of him. "Eat."

"I'll eat later. The kids have been here for a while. You should take them home."

Susanna frowned. "But you need to eat first."

Aaron looked up at her after she spoke. "Are you so worried about me because you want to get back together?"

Susanna stood up quickly. "Forget it."

She left the room, paused to think about what just happened, and stomped her foot in frustration. 'I care about him, and he still talks like that. Serves him right to be single forever,' she thought.

Susanna went upstairs to another room and saw Lillian asleep on the sofa, covered with a small blanket. Maria was awake, watching Lillian with a smile.

Susanna asked, "Maria, how are you feeling?"

Maria nodded when she saw Susanna. "Much better."

Susanna held Maria's hand. "That's good. Listen to the doctor, and you'll get better."

"I know my body. Vivian's been caught, right?"

"Nothing gets past you. Don't worry; we'll handle it."

Maria looked at her. "If I had kicked her out back then, you and the kids wouldn't have suffered."

Susanna knew Maria's mind was still sharp despite her illness. "It's not your fault. Who knew Vivian would be so nasty? Luckily, we're all okay, and the kids have grown up. So you need to get better."

"Susanna, you've had a tough time these years. You should know about Aaron's background by now."

Susanna was quiet for a moment. "I know, and Maud knows too."

Maria looked calm. "Alright. Secrets can't stay hidden forever."

Susanna thought about what Aaron had promised Maud and couldn't help but bring it up.

Maria raised an eyebrow. "Did she really ask for that?"

"Yeah, I know Aaron keeps his word. If he said it, he'll do it. Maud went to Novaria for Calum. If she gets everything from the Abbott Family, she might be manipulated."

"That fool, does she think it's been easy protecting her all these years? And she wants to take over the Abbott Group that Aaron worked so hard for?"

Susanna sensed there was more to the story. "Is there more to it?"

"Yeah. Have her come see me. It's time to clear things up."

Susanna hesitated. "The doctor said you shouldn't get upset; it's bad for your health. Let me pass on the message."

She didn't want Maria to get worked up over Maud. After all, Maud was a bit of a loose cannon right now and could say anything, but Maria's health couldn't handle the stress.

Maria started talking about the past, and Susanna just listened quietly. When Maria finished, Susanna was floored. She never expected there to be so many secrets about Aaron's background.

"Does Aaron know?" Susanna asked after a pause.

"He doesn't. Some things are better left unknown."

Susanna had always had her suspicions. "Since you know Aaron's background, how do you feel about him?"

"He's a good kid and hasn't let the family down. He's done really well. I do feel guilty towards him. I kept him for the Abbott Family. So later, I always hoped he could get married, have kids, and live a happy life."

Susanna was quiet for a bit. "You should rest. I'll go talk to Maud."

"Susanna, do you think I'm a bad person?"

Susanna held Maria's hand. "You've been good to him, and he respects you. That's enough." Relationships were complicated and couldn't be summed up in a few words.

Charles came up to Susanna. "Mom, what's wrong?"

"Nothing." Susanna patted Charles's head. "Did you fix that bug?"

"Of course!" Then he frowned. "But his work is a lot."

"Yeah, Edward is also super busy. They're both workaholics."

Susanna finally left the hospital with Lillian and Charles without looking back at Aaron. Lillian was unusually quiet.

After dinner, Susanna thought she should look into what Maria had said. Lillian was alone in her room, and Charles walked over. "What's up?"

Lillian told Charles what she had overheard and said sadly, "Charles, he seems pretty pitiful too." Charles pursed his lips. He hadn't expected Aaron's background to be like this either.

The next day, Susanna arranged to meet Maud. At the café, Maud walked into the private room with a cold expression. "Get to the point. I don't have time to waste."

"Vivian has been caught." Susanna noticed Maud's face turn pale.

Maud stammered, "Isn't it right that she got caught?"

"Don't you want to know how she was caught?"

"That treacherous woman deserves it."

Susanna said calmly, "Vivian was the one who pushed Maria down the stairs. She heard Maria woke up and was afraid the truth would come out, so she came to the hospital to try to remove Maria's ventilator and kill her."

Maud was stunned. "How could she dare? If she hadn't incited me back then, the bone marrow switch wouldn't have happened. It's all her fault."

Susanna noticed Maud's mood had completely changed. Maud asked, "Did you come to tell me this? Or are you worried because Aaron promised to give me the inheritance?"

"No, I came because Maria has something she wants me to tell you."
