Chapter 183 End Up in Jail
Susanna glanced at Dick, guilt written all over her face, trying to read something from his bruised and swollen features. She gave up quickly; there was no way to be subtle about it.
"Don't worry, Dick," she said hesitantly. "I'll cover the medical bills. This is just a misunderstanding. I hope you won't hold my brother responsible."
If her brother got blamed, he'd be in serious trouble. She didn't want to drag him into a mess because of her. And Harper? He didn't seem like the forgiving type; he'd definitely go after her brother!
Dick was torn for a moment. Did he mishear back then? He remembered the guy warning him, "Stay away from other people's wives." Could it have been, "Stay away from other people's sisters?"
It was odd. Susanna was about to get divorced; why would her ex-husband show up and beat him up? If it was Susanna's brother who hit him, then it all made sense.
Just then, Harper pushed the door open and walked in. Dick quickly turned the page of his notebook, hiding what he'd just written, and looked up to see two people in uniform.
Susanna started to panic. Should she warn her brother or message Daniel to prep for a lawsuit?
As the uniformed officers began their routine questions, Susanna grew more nervous. She discreetly pulled out her phone and sent Daniel a WhatsApp message: [Quick question, how many years for intentional injury?]
She needed to mentally prepare herself with a clear response. Daniel found her question a bit odd.
Daniel: [What's up? Got into trouble?]
Susanna: [Daniel, just answer my question first.]
Daniel: [Depends on the situation. If you hit someone, it's no big deal. If someone hit you, they'll rot in jail!]
Susanna couldn't help but laugh and cry at Daniel's response. Wasn't that a bit too arrogant?
Susanna: [Really?]
Daniel: [I never tell the truth, but I never lie to you.]
As a genius lawyer, Daniel's language skills were already honed to perfection. But with his only sister, he was still very normal. Reluctantly, Susanna chose to believe him. Having a lawyer in the family did provide some reassurance.
Meanwhile, Susanna absentmindedly watched Dick, unaware of what he was jotting down in his notebook.
Soon, the officers stood up. "I have a basic understanding of the situation you described. We'll notify you as soon as we have the investigation results."
Harper was a bit surprised. "How long will the investigation take? Dick was beaten so badly; you should quickly find the culprit. I want to make them pay dearly!"
Susanna's eyelids twitched when she heard this. She had guessed that Harper wouldn't let it go easily, especially since she only had one son.
Dick held his mother back and shook his head.
Harper hugged her son and cried, "Dick, I've never let you get hurt since you were little. If I find out who did this to you, I'll confront them, regardless of my age."
Feeling deeply guilty, Susanna stepped forward to comfort the weeping middle-aged woman. "Aunt Harper, please don't be upset. Luckily, it's just superficial injuries; he'll recover soon."
"Have you ever seen such severe superficial injuries?" Harper countered.
"Aunt Harper, I understand how you feel, but there's no need to worry. You need to take care of yourself; otherwise, who will take care of Dick? With your care, Dick will recover faster." Susanna tried to comfort her.
Harper sat on the bench, holding Susanna's hand. "Susanna, thank goodness you're here. Otherwise, I'd be completely lost."
"Aunt Harper, don't worry. I'll stay with you to take care of Dick until he recovers and is discharged," said Susanna.
Hearing this, Dick looked at Susanna carefully and realized she wasn't lying. He began to calculate in his mind.
After being warned by Susanna's brother outside the school yesterday, he thought he had no hope. After all, men understand men best. Susanna's brother seemed like a successful man and naturally looked down on someone from an ordinary family like him.
However, he hadn't anticipated that after being beaten up, Susanna would volunteer to look after him. This presented him with another opportunity to spend quality time with her.
Whether or not Susanna's brother was the one who hit him, he had to pin it on him now to use Susanna's guilt to get closer to her.
Dick wrote in his notebook: [Mom, I'm hungry. I want your chicken soup.]
"Okay, I'll make it for you when I get home, but what about the hospital while I'm gone?" Harper responded.
Susanna understood Harper's implication and said, "Aunt Harper, you go ahead. I'll stay here and watch over him."
"Alright, that's even better. With Susanna taking care of my son, I can be at ease. I'll be off then."
After seeing Harper leave the ward, Susanna turned to Dick. "What did you just tell the police?"
Dick passed her the note he had prepared earlier. Glancing at it, Susanna noticed that Dick hadn't included anything incriminating; just a list of times and locations, with no mention of any suspects.
Dick then turned back to the first page he had written: [Susanna, don't worry, I won't tell the police. Your brother misunderstood me, but I have a clear conscience. There's nothing wrong with having feelings for someone.]
With fate presenting a second chance, how could he squander it? Women are often compassionate. Should Susanna reject him later, he planned to manipulate this situation. He was confident he could win Susanna's heart!
Seeing what Dick had written, Susanna couldn't help but twitch her mouth. But since her brother had beaten him up, she had no choice. For the time being, she needed to keep him calm. Once he had recuperated, she would explore whether money could resolve the situation.
When news of Dick reporting to the police swiftly reached Aaron's ears, he narrowed his eyes. "How naive. Do they truly believe they can uncover the truth?"
Since he had ordered the hit, he wouldn't leave any evidence behind!
Tyler hesitated, unsure whether to report this to the boss. Aaron narrowed his eyes, uttering, "Speak, what else is there?"
"Mrs. Abbott went to the hospital; she seems to be taking care of Dick."
