Chapter 12 Everything Has Me

Escaping from the warmth of Frederick's embrace, Amelia only felt a chill. She quickly burrowed into the cozy blankets, turned over, and turned her back on him.

A tear silently slid down her cheek, concealed by the darkness.

When Amelia awoke, Frederick was nowhere to be seen. She hid her disappointment, got up, and freshened up. After tidying up a bit, she made her way downstairs.

Frederick was seated on the living room couch. Hearing footsteps from above, he glanced up.

Amelia was dressed in light-colored denim jeans and an extremely simple white shirt, her hair pulled back into a ponytail. She looked radiantly youthful.

She saw Frederick sitting on the couch and paused briefly in her step, but she quickly regained her composure. With a smile, she greeted him first.

"Good morning, Mr. Hastings."

Frederick, upon hearing her address him, felt somewhat displeased.

"Good morning," he replied, his voice cold. He then lowered his gaze to continue reading the magazine in his hands.

Mary had breakfast ready. As Amelia came downstairs, she promptly invited them to eat. "Mr. Hastings, Mrs. Hastings, breakfast is ready."

Amelia nodded lightly and walked into the dining room, pulling out a chair to sit.

Frederick entered expressionlessly and sat opposite her.

They sat facing each other, neither speaking a word.

After breakfast, Amelia stood up to leave.

Frederick also put down his fork and glanced at Amelia. "Ride in my car."

At his words, Amelia nodded in agreement, "Okay."

Her car was still back at the Hastings Manor, and the driver had not brought it back to her yet.

They arrived at the hospital.

Amber had been waiting outside Amelia's office early in the morning.

When she saw Amelia and Frederick emerge together from the elevator, she felt rattled.

"Did you come together?"

Amelia glanced at Frederick. Seeing he didn't respond, she smiled and nodded.

"Yes."

Her answer was straightforward. Frederick shot her a warning look.

"Mr. Hastings gave me a special lift."

"Ms. Roberts, you're really fortunate. Mr. Hastings is so considerate of you," Amber's apprehensive look relaxed slightly upon hearing Amelia's comment.

"Frederick and I are just friends," Amelia explained.

Amber was sick and dressed in her hospital gown. She spoke softly and looked so fragile that it evoked an involuntary tenderness in others.
Amelia couldn't help but be drawn to Amber's beauty, and Frederick was certainly no exception.

Casting a glance at Frederick, Amelia noted his furrowed brow. His concern was barely veiled. With a nonchalant smile, she responded, "I understand."

Previously, Amber often claimed to be Frederick's girlfriend in Amelia's presence. However, after his marital status was exposed yesterday, Amber had no choice but to refer to herself as just a friend.

After all, terms like home-wrecker or mistress are indeed distasteful.

"Take Ms. Roberts back to her room to rest. A nurse will come later to bring her to the operating table," Amelia instructed before she turned and walked into her office.

Amber, seeing Frederick's gaze linger on Amelia, frowned deeply.

Biting her lip in frustration, Amber softly called out, "Frederick…"

Only then did Frederick turn his attention away. "Let's go back to the room," he said.

Amber nodded obediently and followed him quietly back to the room.

The surgery lasted for five grueling hours.

Amelia kept her eyes fixed on the surgical assistant as they stitched up the wound, checking the data thoroughly before stepping away from the operating table.

Everyone remained on high alert throughout the surgery to ensure nothing went wrong. After all, given Amber and Frederick's relationship, the hospital's future could hinge on the outcome of this operation.

After the surgery was completed, Amelia exited the OR through a side door. As she passed by the doorway, she glanced outside through a small window. Frederick was still seated where he had been at the start of the surgery, his expression somber and tinged with worry.

Pulling her gaze away, she whispered to an assistant, "Notify the family."

The assistant nodded in acknowledgment.

After cleaning up and slipping back into her white lab coat, Amelia returned to her office. Her stomach was growling with hunger. She took a sip of water and glanced at the time. Another surgery awaited her in an hour. She sighed, rummaged through her bag for a piece of bread, and decided to make do with that.

Frederick's towering figure appeared in the doorway, eyeing her as she nibbled on the bread, his brow furrowed.

"Is that your lunch?" he asked.

Amelia set down the bread and looked up at him already seated across from her. "I have another operation soon. The cafeteria is past lunchtime, and if I go out to eat, it'll be a waste of time," she replied, her tone natural. She glanced at the bread beside her but continued to speak patiently, "Ms. Roberts' surgery was a success. She needs plenty of rest for now. Once she's recovered, it shouldn't affect her ability to have children."

"It's one of the most successful operations I've ever performed,"
Frederick grunted coldly without much conversation. He cast her a meaningful glance before getting up to leave the room.

Amelia waited until he had left before picking up the sandwich again. After eating, she felt a bit more full.

But she was pregnant now. If she kept making do with insufficient meals, her unborn child would suffer from a lack of nutrition.

She sighed, feeling inexplicably blue.

About ten minutes later, Felix walked into Amelia's office carrying a basket.

"Ms. Davis, this is a dish freshly prepared from the Gourmet Restaurant. Mr. Hastings says you've worked hard on Ms. Roberts's surgery, and this is a reward for you."

The Gourmet Restaurant had been Amelia's favorite place to eat before she got married. The food there always agreed with her palate.

After her marriage, she visited less frequently, and now it had been a while since her last visit.

She reached out to take the basket from Felix, saying, "Please thank Mr. Hastings for me."

Felix did not see any sign of sadness on Amelia's face. He breathed a sigh of relief internally and respectfully left to report back to Frederick.

"Ms. Davis accepted the basket and asked me to thank you on her behalf."

Frederick sat motionless on the couch, nodding slightly. His expression was unchanged.

An hour later, Amelia's next surgery began.

She went to get ready twenty minutes early.

Amber woke up to find Frederick still sitting on the couch in her hospital room, which filled her with a slight sense of delight.

"Frederick..."

Her voice was very weak. Frederick set aside the document he was holding and stood up.

"The surgery was successful. You need to rest now. Get your strength back."

Amber nodded lightly, her face pale. She managed a smile, "I have to thank Ms. Davis. Frederick, can you call her over for me? I'd like to thank her in person."

Frederick nodded slightly, not refusing.

He turned and left Amber's room to find Amelia.

The door to Amelia's office was slightly ajar. As he pushed it open, the first thing he saw was the basket from the Gourmet Restaurant on the desk.

He stepped over and lifted the lid. All the dishes were untouched inside the basket.
