Chapter 15 Your Father Has Woken Up

Amelia looked up to meet his slightly mocking eyes and hesitated for a moment before quickly shifting her gaze away.

"Mr. Hastings, rest assured. Even if I did want to start dating, I would wait until after our divorce," she said with a slight smile while casually flipping through a medical report on the desk.

"Mr. Hastings, you don't have to worry about me causing you any embarrassment. So, if there's nothing else, I need to get to work."

She didn’t look at him again, her clear eyes remaining gentle.

Frederick immediately became stern. Amelia was already focused on her work, ignoring him. With a stern face, he stood up, glanced at her, and said from a position of authority, "Amber wants to see you."

Amelia raised an eyebrow, put down the medical report, and nodded. "I was just about to see Ms. Roberts myself."

Frederick’s expression grew even more solemn.

"With Mr. Hastings, rest easy. I won't speak out of turn in front of Ms. Roberts," Amelia said with a smile.

Frederick let out a cold snort and left without another word.

Seeing his expression, Amelia felt puzzled. She followed Frederick casually. he was walking quickly as if he were worried about leaving Amber alone in the hospital room. Amelia watched his retreating back, trying hard to hide her sorrow.

Upon seeing Frederick, Amber said weakly, "Frederick, I'd like some water."

Hearing this, Frederick went over, poured some water, and brought it to her lips.

Amber relished the care she received from Frederick.

Amelia watched the scene quietly, heartache evident, yet she kept her composure, appearing calm and gentle.

"Ms. Roberts, you look well," Amelia said softly.

Amber, noticing Amelia standing at the doorway, said shyly, "It's all thanks to Frederick."
Amelia nodded, smiling as she turned to Frederick. "Mr. Hastings is so considerate."

Frederick remained silent, shooting a glance at her delicately made-up face and feeling irritated.

Having been married for three years, he rarely saw Amelia so dolled up.

When Amber noticed the displeasure in Frederick's eyes, she pursed her pale lips.

"Frederick, you haven't been to the office today, have you?

"Why don't you head to work? The nurse will take care of me. There won't be any problems."

Hearing Amber's words, Frederick glanced at the clock and replied, "Alright.

"I'll head to the office. Call me if you need anything."

Amber nodded gently, watching Frederick leave.

Once Frederick stepped out of the hospital room, he heard Amber speaking softly to Amelia and unconsciously slowed his pace.

"Ms. Davis, do you have an important appointment today? You look very pretty."

Amelia, who was inspecting Amber's wound, answered calmly without looking up, "I have plans to watch a movie with a friend tonight."

Amber smiled meaningfully at Amelia.

"Ms. Davis, this friend must be quite significant to you, I suppose."

Amelia hummed in response, not wanting to engage in more conversation with Amber.

Unhappy with Amelia's answer, Frederick adjusted his tie in discomfort.

After Amelia had checked Amber's wound, she advised, "You need to rest a lot during this time. Try not to touch the wound.

"If you can't clean yourself, you could ask Mr. Hastings to help you."

With this, Amelia glanced at Amber.

Amber responded with a faint smile and a slight nod, her face pale but her demeanor composed.

"Okay," she answered without hesitation.

Amelia felt a pang of sadness at Amber's response.

It confirmed that there had been intimate contact between her and Frederick. Otherwise, Amber wouldn't have replied without any hesitation.

Amelia looked away, feeling that she shouldn't have prodded Amber and was only creating trouble for herself.

"Get some rest. If you need anything, you can reach out to me or the nurse."

Amelia casually pulled the covers over Amber and turned to leave.

But Amber hesitated and called out to her.

"Ms. Davis, do you know Frederick's wife?"

There was a sudden awkwardness in the air.

Amelia halted, silent for a few seconds before asking softly, "Do you want to meet her?"

Amber shook her head, lips pursed, her expression one of frailty and innocence.

"What right do I have to meet her?"
"I just want to know what kind of person she is," Frederick said, saying they were just using each other. There were no feelings between them.
"Frederick told me he would never fall in love with her."
Hearing her words, Amelia had mixed emotions.

Amber bit her lip gently. Hesitance laced her words.
"Even though I’ve always been confident about Frederick's feelings for me, they were married for three years after all. I don’t know if my appearance hurt her."
Amelia remained silent.

Amber sighed and looked out the window, her eyes brimming with tears.
"I've been dating Frederick for many years, never getting the approval of Mrs. Brittany. I was so eager to stand by Frederick's side and to let everyone know I deserved him that I chose to study abroad, so that one day I could be worthy of him."
"I heard his wife comes from a wealthy family. Someone from an ordinary family like me, no matter how hard they try, could never match up to him."
Amelia felt oppressed. She glanced at Amber and said calmly, "Ms. Roberts, what's most important for you right now is to recover as soon as possible."

Amber, as though she hadn’t heard Amelia’s advice, said in a low voice, "I always wonder what I did wrong in my relationship with Frederick.
"I fell in love with Frederick. And I met him first. Why did I become his mistress, the person who destroyed his marriage?
"Shouldn't it be his wife that destroyed the love between Frederick and me?"
Amber’s gaze was filled with resentment as she looked at Amelia.

Amelia was taken aback. Her heart felt like it had been tightly wrung by a giant hand, the pain almost leaving her breathless.
She furrowed her brows, looking at Amber's pale face, and took a deep breath. After a long time, she said, "I heard they are already discussing divorce.
"Mr. Hastings cares so much for you. He certainly won't let you be wronged or take the blame from others."
Amber looked at Amelia with tear-filled eyes pitifully. "Really?" She asked.
