Chapter 343 She Had Never Received Such Treatment
Frederick walked past Amber with a cold look, and she didn't dare stop him. Her hand shook as she held the documents.
Felix, standing nearby, said calmly, "Ms. Roberts, you should read those documents carefully and decide if you still want to stay at Kasfee."
Amber's face went pale, and she gripped the documents tighter. "Frederick didn't tell me to leave Kasfee," she snapped.
Felix remained indifferent. "Ms. Roberts, do you know what it means to have nothing? If you stay at General Hospital, this document will be in the media tomorrow. The news will be all about you evading taxes."
Amber gritted her teeth, glaring at Felix. "Frederick wouldn't be so heartless!"
Felix replied calmly, "You can try, Ms. Roberts."
He glanced at the security personnel, who then dragged Amber out of the Hastings Group.
Amber tried to push forward but was stopped. "Ms. Roberts, do you want to experience what it's like to lose everything?"
She paused, eyes filled with deep resentment, staring in Frederick's direction.
Frederick walked to the car where Amelia was and opened the back door. His assistant started to greet him but stopped when Frederick shook his head.
Frederick leaned into the car, seeing Amelia asleep with flushed cheeks. He touched her forehead and found it burning hot. His eyes darkened, and he gently picked her up.
Amelia, a light sleeper, woke up as soon as he lifted her. Feeling weak and uncomfortable from the fever, she saw Frederick's face and remembered she was at his office to pick up Anna.
Clearing her drowsy mind, she softly said, "Put me down, I can walk."
Frederick didn't let go. "Hold on to me and don't move. If you fall, I'll take responsibility." He adjusted her slightly.
Startled, Amelia wrapped her arms around his neck. Frederick smiled, "Even if you don't fall, I still want to take care of you."
Amelia glared at him, "Nice try."
Frederick grinned, "I can try more."
Ignoring his cheekiness, Amelia pursed her lips and snorted.
With Amelia no longer struggling, Frederick's eyes sparkled with a smile. He held her tighter, not wanting her to fall.
Then, Frederick carried her into the Hastings Group. The security personnel at the entrance lowered their heads, not daring to look. Only after they entered the elevator did anyone dare to sneak a glance.
The news that Anna was Frederick's daughter had spread through the company in less than half a day.
Word got around that Frederick had brought Anna to the CEO's office, eager to show off his child. If Amelia hadn't been against exposing Anna to the public, Frederick might have announced it on the company's website.
The lobby manager stood cautiously beside Felix. Seeing Frederick carry Amelia into the elevator, he sighed in relief. He was glad he had never given Amelia a hard time when she visited the Hastings Group. Otherwise, he might have offended the future mistress of the company.
The manager said to Felix, "Ms. Davis's status has skyrocketed because of her daughter. Her future here is set. Thanks for the heads-up earlier, Mr. Cox, or I might have lost my job."
Felix raised an eyebrow and replied, "Maybe it's Mr. Hastings who's gained status because of his daughter."
The lobby manager looked puzzled. "What do you mean, Mr. Cox?"
Felix didn't answer and walked toward the elevator.
Anna had damaged several important contracts, forcing everyone to work overtime. To ease the tension, Frederick tripled today's overtime pay and added an extra day off. Departments whose documents weren't damaged almost wished Anna had scribbled on their contracts too.
Amber saw Frederick openly carrying Amelia in and out of the Hastings Group, and her heart sank. She had never received such treatment. Thinking of Frederick's cold look at her earlier and his gentle demeanor with Amelia now, she felt sad. The stark contrast was hard to accept.
She realized why Felix could be so confident when he said her news would be all over the headlines if she stayed at Kasfee and General Hospital. Frederick no longer had any feelings for her. The little bit of feeling he had was for the girl his mother had described, and that girl was Amelia. Even when dating Frederick, she was just a shadow of Amelia.
Amber bit her lip, standing in a corner, pale.
Frederick carried Amelia into the office. Anna, drawing on the couch, saw them and immediately asked, "Mommy, what's wrong?" Her eyes were full of worry.
Before Amelia could answer, Frederick spoke. "Your mother is fine, Anna, don't worry."
Anna relaxed. When Frederick placed Amelia on the couch, Anna snuggled up to her. She grinned, "Mommy, you don't want to walk either? Are you feeling shy?"
When Anna didn't want to walk, she would act spoiled and ask to be carried, so Vincent always teased her. Now, she gently stroked Amelia's face, trying to make her feel embarrassed.
Amelia looked slightly embarrassed and glanced at Frederick. Seeing her look, Frederick chuckled, pinched Anna's cheek, and picked her up to sit on his lap. "Your mom is sick. Don't make her feel embarrassed, okay?"
Hearing Frederick defend Amelia, Susan couldn't help but smile. Amelia had endured for so many years, and now she was finally reaping the rewards.
