Chapter 473 Anna Woke Up
Casey left the study feeling pretty relieved, thinking she had nailed her task. Amelia stayed in her chair for a bit, waiting until she heard Casey heading downstairs before putting her book down and moving towards the bookshelf.
Just as she was about to check something, she spotted the broom leaning against the doorway. Feeling a bit suspicious, she stayed by the window, pretending to chat on the phone about work.
Amelia hadn't been standing there long when Casey came back upstairs. She walked in, awkwardly grabbed the book Amelia had been reading, and put it back on the shelf. "I forgot to take the broom downstairs," Casey said with an apologetic smile.
Amelia kept her cool and said, "Take it down. Don't mess up like this again. My sister doesn't like employees who make frequent mistakes." Just then, the sound of a car pulling into the Davis Manor's yard made Casey tense up, her earlier relief disappearing in an instant.
Casey quickly said, "Thanks for the reminder, Ms. Davis. I'll head downstairs now." This time, Casey went downstairs fast, clearly not wanting to run into Rachel.
Amelia watched Casey for a moment, glanced at the corner of the bookshelf, and then looked away.
When Rachel came upstairs, Amelia waited in the hallway. The surveillance cameras in the hallway were a deterrent to Casey, but Amelia knew that the bedrooms and some other areas didn't have this coverage, which probably gave Casey the chance to plant bugs during her cleaning.
Earlier, Amelia had noticed the bug was much smaller and more discreet than the usual ones on the market. If she hadn't been keeping an eye on Casey, she wouldn't have known when it had been placed.
As Rachel came upstairs, she noticed that Casey's servant room door was ajar, likely trying to eavesdrop. Seeing Amelia's gaze fixed on the study, Rachel got the hint right away. Her eyes turned cold, and she nodded slightly.
Rachel's smile, subtly cold, emerged. "You were too impulsive today," she said quietly but sharply, her voice tinged with dissatisfaction.
Amelia let the words sink in before responding, "Did I cause you trouble?"
"What do you think?" Rachel shot back. "Didn't I tell you to hold off for a bit, to keep Frederick happy, and only talk about emotional stuff after the Davis Group's issues are sorted?"
Amelia lowered her head in silence.
Rachel's tone got harsher. "If you don't want Frederick to take away Anna's custody, you'd better follow my plan. Only if the Davis Group is fine will Anna's custody be secure. I hope today's incident won't happen again. Think about it."
After speaking, Rachel walked past Amelia and headed to her bedroom. As she passed by, she whispered, "Frederick will contact you later."
Amelia stood in the hallway for a while, then went downstairs instead of going back to her bedroom. She sat alone on the sofa for a bit.
Casey couldn't help but come out of the servant's room, seemingly noticing Amelia by chance. She asked, "Ms. Davis, why aren't you going upstairs to rest so late?"
Amelia rubbed her temples and said calmly, "I'll go up in a bit."
Casey nodded and then whispered, "Did you have a fight with Ms. Rachel Davis? When I was washing up earlier, I thought I heard her talking to you. Ms. Rachel Davis has that kind of temper. Don't let it get to you."
Pretending to be all concerned, Casey put on the act of a caring confidante. Amelia gave a bitter smile and nodded. Just then, her phone screen lit up, catching Casey's eye. Casey glanced at the phone screen as it lit up, but the screensaver prevented her from seeing who had sent the message.
Amelia picked up her phone, saying, "I'm going upstairs to rest. Casey, you should get some rest too."
Casey responded with a smile, her eyes following Amelia as she left. In her room, Amelia unlocked her phone and saw a friend request. The avatar—a painting of a sunset she had painted three years ago at Spring Villa—stirred her emotions. She accepted the request, and immediately, a video call request popped up.
Amelia quickly put on her headphones and answered. Frederick appeared on the screen, his face filled with tenderness. He didn't speak, and neither did she. After a few moments, a chat box opened.
Amelia saw a message from Frederick and raised an eyebrow.
Frederick: [Don't click on any links sent to you right now, or your phone might get infected with a virus and be monitored.]
Amelia: [So, is that why you changed your account?]
Frederick: [Not just the account, I also changed my phone. I bought a couple's set. A delivery will arrive for you tomorrow. Honey, I'm sorry for the inconvenience.]
Amelia looked at Frederick, his eyes full of affection—a stark contrast to his earlier impatience.
Amelia: [Aren't you afraid that ordering a phone for me will be discovered, given how closely you're being watched?]
Frederick: [I used Billy's name. Lucky Billy.]
Amelia couldn't help but smile at Frederick's message. Frederick, seeing Amelia's smile in the video, felt a stir in his heart. After settling Nancy for the night, he had planned to intercept Rachel's car and sneak into the Davis Manor.
But Rachel wouldn't let him take such a risk because of the internal issues at Davis Manor. So he had to abandon the idea.
Frederick: [Honey, your smile is beautiful. You scared me tonight. I thought you really didn't want me anymore.]
Amelia was typing when Frederick's message came through again.
Frederick: [I miss you and Anna so much. Has Anna started to dislike me again?]
Amelia thought of how Anna had said she wouldn't bother with Frederick anymore and nodded.
Seeing Amelia nod, Frederick's handsome face fell, looking remarkably like Anna when she was upset. Amelia typed a message and sent it.
Amelia: [I will soothe Anna's feelings. You need to resolve this matter quickly.]
Amelia sighed, feeling the weight of the situation. Just then, she noticed Anna stirring in her small bed. Half-asleep, Anna sat up in her small bed.
Amelia quickly ended the call, worried that Anna might call out eagerly if she saw Frederick on the screen. She also remained mindful of any possible bugs in the room.
"Anna, what's wrong?" Amelia asked softly.
Anna rubbed her eyes and mumbled, "I need to pee," as she made her way to the bathroom.
Frederick, seeing the call abruptly ended, sent a message.
Frederick: [What happened?]
Amelia: [Anna woke up.]
Frederick felt a familiar frustration. Every time he tried to get closer to Amelia, Anna seemed to interrupt.
