Chapter 389 Becoming Vigilant
Charles cast a meaningful glance at her, his eyes filled with warning.
Shirley's face immediately fell, and she muttered dejectedly, "I got it."
Satisfied with Shirley's response, Charles stepped toward where Rachel was.
Rachel was talking to Tina, and their conversation had just ended as he approached.
Rachel told Tina, "Take Shirley back to the office first."
"Okay, Ms. Davis." Tina agreed. Seeing Charles approaching them, she greeted him politely before leaving.
The elevator doors opened, and Rachel beckoned for him to enter after she stepped in.
Charles followed suit and stood beside her.
Just as he was about to speak, Rachel's phone rang. Rachel gave him an apologetic smile. She said, "Sorry, I need to take this call."
Charles raised his hand slightly, indicating she should go ahead. Rachel glanced at her phone and saw that it was her father calling. A hint of confusion flashed in her eyes before she answered. "Dad, what's up?"
Vincent's low voice came through, asking, "Did Layla come to the exchange meeting today?"
Rachel's eyes dimmed slightly at her father's question, and she responded softly. "Yes. What did Amelia say to you?"
Vincent took a deep breath before responding solemnly, "Not much. It's just that Layla seemed to have said something to Amelia, so Amelia came back to ask if I knew Layla."
Rachel's expression turned grim upon hearing his words, thinking that Layla might have said something to Amelia while she was dealing with the representatives from Yaradia Enterprises.
Rachel felt a bit guilty. She said, "Dad, that's on me. I'll keep an eye on Amelia from now on."
As soon as Rachel finished speaking, Vincent's tone became very heavy. "Rachel, I'm more worried about you than I am about Amelia."
Back then, when Layla left, Amelia was still young, but Rachel was already old enough to understand what was going on.
Layla's departure had a significant impact on Rachel, causing her to fall seriously ill. Now that Rachel was in contact with Layla again, Vincent couldn't help but worry about her.
Amelia, no matter what, still had Frederick to rely on.
Rachel, on the other hand, seemed to have no one to depend on.
Rachel couldn't help but tighten her grip on the phone, her voice softening as she responded to Vincent. "Dad, I'm fine. You don't need to worry about me. Anyway, I have some other things to take care of here, so I'll talk to you later when I get home."
With Charles right beside her, Rachel found it inconvenient to discuss many issues with Vincent.
Vincent sighed lightly and reminded her, "Don't drink too much at tonight's event. You just recovered from a cold."
Rachel responded with a noncommittal hum before hanging up. She slipped her phone into her pocket. Charles, still standing nearby, remarked in a low voice, "Your dad seems to care about you a lot."
Rachel responded calmly. "Of course. If it wasn't for him, no one would care about me and my sister."
Despite her attempt at nonchalance, Charles sensed the deep sadness behind her words.
The year Layla left the Davis family was also a rough one for Charles's mother, so Charles could understand what Rachel was feeling just then.
As they talked, the elevator doors opened.
Rachel stepped out first. As she got to her apartment door, she entered the code and invited Charles in. "Mr. Wright, come on in."
Charles smiled faintly and stepped inside.
Rachel poured a glass of water and handed it to Charles, speaking softly. "Have some water."
Charles took the glass and thanked her.
Rachel withdrew her hand and asked in a low voice, "You remember where you left it last night, right?"
Charles sipped the water, remaining calm and composed. "Yes."
Rachel asked. "Do you need my help to find it?"
She was concerned as it involved the commercial secrets of Charles's company.
Charles showed no sign of guilt. He replied calmly, "No need for that. I left it in the drawer of the guest room. I'll go get it."
Rachel didn't doubt him and nodded.
Charles took another sip of water before heading toward the guest room..
He walked a few steps, paused for a few seconds, and then turned back out.
Rachel was drinking water as she saw him come out. She asked. "Did you find it?"
Charles nodded. "Yes, I found it."
Rachel raised an eyebrow and warned him, "You shouldn't leave such important things lying around. If you hadn't found it today, it could've made things difficult for me."
Charles responded with a smile. "Even if I hadn't found the USB drive today, I trust that you wouldn't have taken advantage of the circumstances."
Rachel gave Charles a piercing look. Although she tried to control her emotions, the probing look in her eyes still showed.
Charles met Rachel's gaze without faltering. He stood opposite Rachel, his eyes intense and warm, meeting her gaze with a smile on his lips.
Rachel could only hold his gaze for a few seconds before quickly looking away, feeling a strange sensation and a growing sense of caution.
Charles indeed seemed to be trying to gain her trust step by step.
Given the current situation of the Davis family, with all the prominent families watching her every move, Rachel had to tread carefully.
When Charles's mother passed away, he was still quite young. Growing up under Layla's influence, he managed to grasp the main industries of the Wright family firmly, proving his sharp intellect and shrewdness.
The Davis family must not become Charles's prey.
After looking away, Rachel's expression didn't change much. She quietly composed herself, glanced at the time, and said softly, "Mr. Wright, would you like to go back to the hotel to rest? I can arrange for a driver to take you there."
Charles immediately refused. "No, I don't make it a habit to take a nap at noon."
He seemed to ignore the hint in Rachel's words.
A glint flashed in Rachel's eyes, and she smiled. "Really? I always take a nap every day. If I don't lie down for a while, I feel tired in the evening."
"Then you should rest. I'll wait for you," Charles replied without hesitation.
Rachel looked at his sincere expression and didn't know how to respond.
She took a deep breath and said, sternly, "It wouldn't be appropriate for me to rest on my own and keep you waiting. I'll arrange for a driver to take you back to the hotel, Mr. Wright."
Charles raised an eyebrow, looked at Rachel, and stated calmly. "I thought after what happened last night, our relationship would be better. I didn't expect you to still be so prim and proper with me. Honestly, Ms. Davis, this makes me a bit sad."
