Chapter 419 The One Who Loves More Always Gets Hurt More
Constance was trying to convince Sandra, "I swear, I won't just hand out meds to Maria like that again. Sandra, Maria's gonna need cash for her treatment, and once she's outta the hospital, there'll be a ton of follow-up costs. Your gig as a caregiver pays way more than what Rodolfo used to make. If you bail now, you might not get another shot at making this kind of money. You..."
Constance shot a glance at Amelia, hesitating to go on.
Amelia took a deep breath, her eyes dead serious. She said, "Sandra, Maria was doing better, but after this mess, she's back to square one. Professor Brown and a bunch of other big shots came all the way from Tideport City to Kasfee to help Maria. All their hard work just went down the drain. You really need to think this through."
After dropping that bomb, Amelia walked away from Sandra and Constance.
Constance watched Amelia leave, grumbling under her breath, "She probably just doesn't want to see you doing well!"
Sandra frowned, clearly annoyed, and said quietly, "Mom, you and Dad should head back to Tideport City. I can handle things here. Dr. Davis is right; I can't just ignore Maria to make money."
Constance's face darkened, looking pissed. She wanted to snap at Sandra, but seeing Maria being wheeled out of the ward, she bit her tongue and rushed to Maria's side, crying, "Maria, I'm so sorry. If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't be suffering like this. I wanna stay and take care of you, but I'm just too clumsy and useless. Instead of helping, I made things worse. Your mom doesn't want me here."
The nurses, seeing Constance's meltdown, looked all annoyed. One of them pulled Constance aside and said sternly, "Maria's still really weak. Please, stop it. Don't mess with her recovery."
Sandra quickly pulled Constance to her side. The medical staff then wheeled Maria back to the ward.
Jessica had been waiting in the lab for the test results. Once they were out, she rushed back to the treatment team and called a meeting.
Jessica took a deep breath and said seriously, "The meds Constance gave Maria clashed with what we prescribed. The mix caused Maria's body to freak out. She must've started giving Maria the meds the day she got here."
Jessica paused, then summed it up, "Dr. Davis and I didn't screw up our treatment plan."
Before, when things went south, Jessica didn't think it was her fault and even thought about blaming Amelia. But now, knowing the truth, she felt a bit guilty facing Amelia.
Amelia looked serious as she reviewed the test report.
Ulysses sat at the head of the table, looking grim. He said, "Given the current situation, the old treatment plan's out the window. We had a few backup plans ready. Let's discuss and share our thoughts."
Amelia looked at the data on the test report, took a slight breath, and said, "Dr. Jessica Brown's backup treatment plan should be able to handle Maria's condition pretty well."
Hearing Amelia's words, everyone grabbed Jessica's treatment plan and started digging into it.
A spark lit up in Jessica's eyes, and she felt a mix of emotions. She'd always seen Amelia as a rival and often went after her. She never thought Amelia would back her plan.
Pushing her feelings aside, Jessica carefully broke down the details of her treatment plan.
The other professors nodded along, and they finally decided to roll with Jessica's backup plan.
After the meeting, Amelia walked out of the conference room, and Jessica trailed behind. "Dr. Davis," she called out.
Amelia stopped and turned to look at Jessica. "What's up?"
Jessica wanted to thank Amelia, but seeing her calm face, she hesitated. Maybe Amelia hadn't even noticed her past behavior. She took a breath and forced a smile. "I wanna talk about Maria's condition."
Amelia, noticing Jessica's awkward vibe, was a bit surprised but nodded. "Sure."
Jessica felt relieved and followed Amelia into her office.
Even though Jessica got on the team thanks to her dad's connections, she was pretty sharp. Amelia got what she was saying when she brought up some ideas.
Jessica had been all high and mighty before, looking down on Amelia, but now she regretted it.
Amelia shared her thoughts with Jessica, but before she could finish, Cynthia rushed in. "Amelia, Dylan's missing. I just went to the restroom for a sec, and he's gone," she said, her voice shaking.
Amelia's face darkened. She stood up, eyes serious. "Mrs. Kingsley, I'll help you find him. Don't worry." She walked out of the office, first alerting security to start looking, then took Cynthia to the monitoring room.
The footage showed Dylan leaving the ward and getting into the elevator. He rode it to the top floor.
Seeing Dylan get off on the top floor, Cynthia felt her knees go weak.
Amelia bolted out of the monitoring room and headed for the top floor.
Luckily, the hospital's rooftop was locked 24/7.
Amelia got off the elevator, climbed a flight of stairs, and saw Dylan sitting by the rooftop door.
Dylan forced a pale smile when he saw Amelia. "Amelia, why are you here?" he mumbled.
Seeing him like that, Amelia secretly sighed in relief and said softly, "Mrs. Kingsley is looking for you."
Dylan nodded slightly, glanced at the closed rooftop door, and said calmly, "I just wanted some fresh air. Don't worry."
He stood up, holding onto the railing. Seeing Cynthia, who was panting and following behind Amelia, his eyes softened.
Cynthia, holding back tears, walked to Dylan's side and supported him. "Dylan, let's go back to the ward. You need your IV soon," she said softly, acting like nothing happened.
Dylan nodded and let Cynthia help him down the stairs.
Seeing Dylan's pale face, Amelia felt a heavy weight in her heart. She thought sadly, 'In relationships, the one who loves more always gets hurt more.'
