Chapter 212 Amidst the Swirling Smoke, Feeling a Sense of Unreality

Frederick did not respond to Amelia's words but simply took a seat next to Amelia.

Amelia arched an eyebrow, finding Frederick increasingly inscrutable.

He bypassed first class for economy, scrambling for a seat.

Seated, his deep blue eyes glanced past Amelia to Kimberly..

Kimberly, wife of his mother's attending physician, greeted him with a slight nod. "It has indeed been a while, Mr. Hastings."

"Our last encounter was at the commendation ceremony. You seem in better spirits now," Kimberly noted.

Kimberly nodded slightly when she saw Frederick, saying, "It has been a while, Mr. Hastings. The last time we met was at the commendation ceremony. You seem to be in better spirits now."

Amelia's back was tightly against the seat, trying not to interfere with their conversation.

"Ms. Harris, you are still contributing to the medical field at this age, which is the example we young people should learn from." Frederick humbly conversed with Kimberly.

In Amelia's impression, Frederick didn't seem to be good at chatting with older people.

However, on this flight, Frederick and Kimberly's conversation took up most of the time.

Listening to their conversation, Amelia felt a bit tired.

Paul, on the other hand, listened to their conversation carefully.

After all, they didn't know which hotel Amelia and Kimberly were headed to.

From Frederick and Kimberly's conversation, Paul learned the address of the hotel. Upon landing, he immediately contacted the hotel.

When they got off the plane, Paul took the initiative to carry their luggage.

Seeing Paul warmly shoulder their bags, Amelia whispered, "We might not be going the same way as Mr. Hastings, so we won't trouble you."

Kimberly nodded in agreement with Amelia, saying, "Thank you, Mr. Hastings and Mr. Paul, for your care. I understand you must be here for serious business in Tideport City. We won't impose further on your time."

Paul was polite and respectful, saying, "We are also staying at the Tideport City hotel, so it works out conveniently."

Paul had worked alongside Frederick for years. When Frederick chose to sit in the economy class instead of first class, he understood what his job for the day entailed.

Frederick was very satisfied with Paul's arrangements.

"It's quite hot now, and even getting a taxi involves waiting in line. We need to head back to the hotel first. Let's go together."

Kimberly glanced at Amelia, seemingly seeking her opinion.

Amelia pursed her lips, considering Kimberly's elderly status. Insisting on refusing could inconvenience Kimberly in the heat if they didn't find a taxi promptly.

After some thought, she nodded and said, "We'll trouble you, Mr. Hastings."

Frederick noticed Amelia deliberately keeping her distance from him in front of Kimberly, his gaze turning sullen slightly.

Receiving no response from Frederick, Amelia raised her eyebrows slightly and said no more. She had no choice but to ride in his car.

Quietly, she followed behind Frederick to where the Hastings Group's branch car was waiting outside.

When the head of the branch in Tideport City saw Frederick, he greeted him immediately.

Amelia and Kimberly had planned to take a different car, but Frederick arranged for them to ride in the same car as him.

Kimberly got in first, and Amelia sat in the middle.

Frederick took the seat on Amelia's right.

As they settled into the car, Kimberly sighed softly. "It's your era now, young people. Ms. Davis, I remember when you used to visit my office in high school. Mr. Hastings was in college then. Sometimes, it feels like it was just yesterday."

Just as Amelia was about to speak, she heard Frederick, who was sitting next to her, speak first, "Ms. Davis, I heard Ms. Harris mention that you used to come to her office when my mother was in the hospital. I'm curious. Did you know my mother back then?"

Amelia's heart stirred at Frederick's words. In their three years of marriage, he had never shown interest in her past. No matter her love for him, his demeanor towards her affection remained cold.

Now, three years post-divorce, Frederick suddenly took an interest in her history, making Amelia feel uneasy, as if someone might uncover her past.

"It's quite normal for me to know Mrs. Hastings," Amelia spoke quickly before Kimberly could say anything.

Frederick stared at Amelia intently, trying to find any flaws in her expression, but she remained calm, without any emotional fluctuations.

Initially, there had been business dealings between the Davis Group and the Hastings Group. Brittany had always favored Amelia, so it was natural for her to know Emily.

However, for some reason, Frederick felt that this wasn't the truth.

Feeling unsettled, he fell silent.

Seeing that Amelia didn't seem keen on bringing up the past in front of Frederick, Kimberly tactfully avoided continuing the conversation about Emily.

After all, everyone had moments of youthful impulsiveness, and perhaps that past was somewhat embarrassing for Amelia.

Arriving at the Tideport City Hotel, Frederick headed straight to the penthouse suite.

As Amelia and Kimberly got off the elevator, Frederick politely bid farewell to Kimberly.

His gaze fell on Amelia, who seemed preoccupied with the luggage, not even sparing him a glance. His already stern expression darkened even more.

Paul politely helped Amelia and Kimberly bring their luggage to their respective rooms.

After a brief rest, Kimberly came to knock on Amelia's room.

Amelia opened the door and invited Kimberly in.

After a brief discussion, they decided to head to the hospital to check on things.

Throughout the journey, Kimberly and Amelia remained preoccupied with the child's condition.

Upon reaching the Tideport City Hospital, they first spoke with the child's attending physician to understand the situation before visiting her ward.

Kimberly and Amelia had a simple meal in the hospital cafeteria before returning to the hotel.

The child's condition was much more serious than they had imagined.

Kimberly went straight back to her room. They had been on a plane for several hours and then went to the hospital to discuss matters. After all, the elderly were not as physically strong as the young, so after she returned to her room, she went to rest early.

Amelia's mind was consumed with the child's diagnosis report, preventing her from sleeping. She decided to take a walk in the hotel garden to clear her mind.

As she approached a bench by the lake, she saw a familiar figure.

His black shirt was unbuttoned, revealing a hint of his chest. His tall and straight figure leaned slightly against the pavilion pillar, exuding a lazy and noble air.

He held a lit cigarette in his hand, exhaling a smoke ring, the handsome and unreal face shrouded in smoke.
