Chapter 263 What Trick is Frederick Trying to Play

She worried that the issue Frederick wanted to discuss with Vincent was about Anna.

Vincent's hand paused for a moment. Seeing Amelia's slightly anxious eyes, he nodded. "Alright."

Vincent's agreement caused her heart to flutter.

Vincent remained calm as he composedly said to Frederick, "You go to the study first. I'll take the fish to the kitchen."

Frederick nodded.

Susan approached him with a polite expression, "Mr. Hastings, please follow me."

Frederick gave Amelia an affectionate look.

Amelia straightened her back, her heart pounding. When his gaze swept over her, she tried her best to control herself and returned his look calmly.

Frederick withdrew his gaze and followed Susan to the study.

Amelia hurried to the kitchen.

Vincent was putting water in the fish tank while Anna stood beside him, watching the fish with delight.

"Daddy," Amelia spoke softly, her eyes showing a hint of nervousness.

Vincent looked up at her, seeing her concerned expression, and sighed lightly. "Did he find out?"

Amelia bit her lip slightly. "Not sure."

Vincent tightened his expression, then he added, "If you're not sure, then don't be nervous. You watch Anna. I'll go talk to him."

Amelia nodded.

As Vincent was about to leave the kitchen, Amelia couldn't help but pull him back. "Daddy, don't let him trick you."

Vincent looked at her worried face, reached out, and ruffled her hair. "Don't worry. I'm not foolish."

Amelia pressed her lips together, watching Vincent leave the kitchen and head to the study.

Anna wanted to stay in the kitchen to watch the fish, so Amelia remained with her.

The fish struggled in the tank, occasionally splashing water with its tail, causing Anna to laugh joyfully.

She didn't notice Amelia's distraction and pulled Amelia's hand to make her watch the fish. "Mommy, look at it."

Amelia snapped back to reality, glanced at Anna holding her hand, forced a smile, and put away her worries to accompany her.

In the study.

Vincent walked in, drying his hands with a towel.

Frederick's eyes immediately turned to Vincent as he entered.

Vincent didn't meet Frederick's gaze. He handed the towel to Susan and walked to the desk. Sitting down, he looked at Frederick. "Sit down and let's talk."

Frederick nodded slightly and took a seat opposite Vincent.

Seeing his somewhat serious expression, Vincent also became serious and quickly organized his thoughts.

'If Frederick asks about Anna, how should I respond?' Vincent thought.

Regarding Anna, they at the Davis Manor would never back down.

Frederick looked up at Vincent. Seeing the serious expression on his face, he felt a slight tension.

Frederick inquired, "Mr. Davis, I want to ask you about Amelia's past."

"The past?" Vincent thought Frederick would immediately ask for Anna's custody.

Frederick nodded. "I want to know about her relationship with Emily."

Vincent looked puzzled. After a few seconds, he said, "What relationship could Amelia and Emily have?"

Vincent's words took Frederick aback.

Frederick continued, "I want to know if Amelia studied medicine because of Emily and if Emily promised her that she would become my wife."

Vincent listened to his questions, remained silent for a long time, and then spoke softly, "She studied medicine because of Emily? How could that be?"

Frederick's heart sank, and his brow furrowed.

'Could I have been mistaken?' Frederick pondered.

His feelings were now complicated. He both hoped he had mistaken her identity and feared that he had.

If he had indeed mistaken her identity, then his actions over the years would have been laughable.

Vincent observed Frederick's myriad emotions and slowly added, "She studied medicine because of you."

Frederick was taken aback, his previously lowered head lifting in surprise to look at Vincent.

It was the first time Vincent had seen so many emotions on Frederick's usually stern face.

But thinking of how Amelia had lost her dignity over the years because she liked Frederick, Vincent felt more heartache for his daughter.

Vincent sighed helplessly, "She had no relationship with Emily. Why would she study medicine because of Emily? According to Amelia's character, she would only do something for someone she likes."

Frederick didn't know what to say.

He sat in his chair, his eyes filled with regret and a sense of helplessness over the unchangeable past.

Seeing him like this, Vincent spoke seriously, "Didn't you always see Amelia's affection for you as a burden?"

That was why even after being married to Amelia for three years, Frederick had disregarded her feelings.

"I..." Frederick wanted to explain but found that the words stuck in his throat, unsure of how to justify his past actions.

Frederick had never realized he could be so tongue-tied.

Facing thousands of employees and senior leaders, Frederick could always respond calmly and speak eloquently.

But now, facing Vincent's questioning and Amelia's feelings for him, he didn't know what to say.

Vincent looked at Frederick quietly for a long time before speaking slowly. "Do you have any other questions?"

Frederick shook his head.

Vincent stood up from his chair. As he left the study, he said softly, "Alright. Amelia is hard to pursue."

Frederick was taken aback and responded in a low voice, "I'm prepared for that."

Vincent smiled and added lightly, "If you don't experience the pain she went through, she probably won't agree to be with you."

Frederick said, "I'm prepared for that."

Vincent said, "Good to hear."

With that, Vincent walked out of the study, adding as he left, "Stay for dinner tonight. You haven't tasted my cooking in a long time."

Frederick nodded and stood up from his chair, his attitude towards Vincent noticeably more respectful and courteous than before. "Thank you, Mr. Davis."

Vincent looked at him, remained silent for a few seconds, and then left the study.

Anna and Amelia were still in the kitchen.

As Vincent approached, Amelia looked at him nervously.

"Daddy." She had just spoken when her eyes met Frederick's gaze.

His deep eyes stared intently at her, the warmth in them undisguised, mixed with some obscure emotions.

Amelia pressed her lips together and remained silent.

Vincent, walking ahead, gave Amelia a reassuring look.

But Amelia's heart did not settle. She felt that something was off with Frederick.

Vincent needed to handle the fish and worried that the fishy smell would cling to them, so he shooed them out of the kitchen.

Frederick carried Anna to the front hall.

Amelia calmed herself a bit and cautiously observed the man sitting on the sofa playing games with Anna.

As soon as she looked over, Frederick caught her gaze.

Amelia was startled and quickly looked away.

Amelia couldn't figure out what trick this man was trying to play.
