Chapter 45 Even if Frederick and I Get Divorced, I'll Always Be Your Granddaughter
A hint of amusement glimmered in Rachel's beautiful eyes as she glanced at Amber.
With just that look, Amber stiffened, her pallor deepening, and her grip on the hospital bed railing shook uncontrollably.
Frederick narrowed his eyes slightly.
Brittany glanced at Amber's weakened state with even more disdain.
She thought, "Amber is such an embarrassment! Rachel has only made a few mocking comments, and she's already fallen apart. She has no shame."
"Rachel, you're right," Brittany agreed.
With a smile, Rachel proposed, "So, Grandma, don't be angry anymore. It's not worth it. Shall I take you home?"
Brittany nodded, and with Rachel's support, they left Amber's hospital room together.
As they reached the door, Brittany suddenly stopped, turning to glance back at Amber standing beside the bed.
She said coldly, "Ms. Roberts since you had ill intentions and failed to meet the conditions we initially agreed upon, I'll be rescinding the gift. Prepare to repay the money within three days."
After Brittany snorted coldly, she walked away.
Amber stood there, watching as Brittany and Rachel's backs receded in the distance, her eyes brimming with tears. She took a step back and nearly stumbled to the ground.
Mina, who was nearby, had been scared and speechless by the earlier scene. Now, seeing Amber about to fall, she quickly rushed over to offer support.
With Mina's help, Amber managed to lie back down on the bed.
Her limbs were like ice. Seeing that Frederick hadn't left, she looked at him with a sense of grievance.
"Frederick..." she began, her voice quivering and pitiful.
Frederick's gaze was cold. He stood there looking at her, his face void of any emotional change.
"Did you take money from my grandmother?" he asked.
Amber hesitated, biting her lip tightly. At this point, she could only admit it.
"Yes. But I had my reasons. I didn't want to give up the chance to study abroad. I wanted to become a better person, someone worthy of you," Amber continued. "For kids from struggling families like mine, opportunities like that don't come around often. I..."
Frederick cut her off before she could finish.
"How much money did you take?"
His voice was indifferent, and there was a detached look in his eyes.
Amber bit her lip again, silent for a long time before she finally murmured, "Five million dollars."
Frederick's expression grew colder.
To the Hastings family now, five million dollars wasn't significant.
But to the Hastings family, who were in crisis back then, it was a substantial amount of money.
Amber suddenly felt panicked, fixing her gaze tightly on Frederick. "Frederick, I'll gather the money as soon as I can and repay Mrs. Brittany."
The coldness in Frederick's eyes was like winter ice.
He had always thought she was an independent and strong girl, but now he realized he had been mistaken.
Frederick didn't want to hear anymore. He turned and walked towards the door of the hospital room.
Amber immediately threw off the covers. Just as she stepped out of bed, a sharp pain shot through her ankle. She fell to the floor in an instant.
Mina hurried to help her up.
Frederick paused for a moment, glanced at her with a face void of expression, and then strode away.
Amber sat on the floor, wanting to cry but finding no tears would come.
When Frederick left, he didn't close the door to the hospital room. Outside, many patients' families were witnessing Amber's disheveled state.
Mina was in a panic and unsure of what to do next. She could only go and close the hospital room door to block the onlookers' gossip.
Meanwhile, Amelia had been waiting inside the car for a long time and still hadn't seen Rachel come down.
Rachel had a few drinks today, and Amelia worried that in her tipsy state, Rachel might do something rash to defend her honor.
Amelia and Frederick were on the brink of divorce.
As for Frederick's past and future with Amber, Amelia preferred not to get involved.
She stepped out of the car as soon as she arrived at the hospital. Just as she entered, she saw Rachel and Brittany emerge from the elevator, chatting and laughing.
Amelia breathed a sigh of relief at the sight.
Brittany was thrilled to see Amelia.
"Amelia!" she exclaimed.
Amelia approached with a warm smile.
Brittany spoke with Amelia for a while, mostly scolding Frederick for wasting Amelia's time over the years.
"Tomorrow, you'll go back to Hastings Manor with the agreement. I arranged your affairs from the start. Let me be the one to end them," Brittany declared, patting Amelia's hand with a look of regret and resignation in her eyes.
Amelia pressed her lips together and said, "Grandma, even if Frederick and I get divorced, I will always be your granddaughter."
"I will, too," Rachel chimed in from the side.
Brittany couldn't help but laugh. "With two such wonderful granddaughters, I'm very satisfied!"
Seeing that Brittany was in good spirits, Amelia felt at ease.
She hoped that Vincent would accept the news of her divorce from Frederick just as easily as Brittany had.
It was getting late. Brittany needed to return to Hastings Manor for rest.
Amelia and Rachel escorted her to the car.
The driver quickly started the car and drove away.
Rachel patted Amelia on the shoulder only after Brittany's car had disappeared from view, signaling for Amelia to get in the car.
As Amelia got into the car, she noticed Frederick exiting the hospital.
His gaze, deep and cold, drifted in their direction.
Amelia faltered for a moment. Seeing his distressed expression, she quickly looked away and got into the car.
"Let's go," she instructed softly, and the driver immediately started the engine.
Frederick paused for a moment, his gaze intensifying as he watched Amelia hurry into the car.
The next day, as soon as Amelia walked into the hospital, Nicole approached her with a look of regret.
"What a pity! I wasn't on duty last night! Otherwise, I could have witnessed the scene myself!"
The messages in last night's group chat hadn't stopped.
Someone had mistaken Rachel for Frederick's wife, continually praising her for being stunningly beautiful.
They were puzzled as to why Frederick, with such a beautiful wife, could still be attracted to a woman like Amber.
Nicole immediately guessed that it was Rachel who had come to the hospital.
Amelia actually looked quite similar to Rachel, except Amelia dressed more plainly due to her job.
Rachel, on the other hand, as the female CEO of Davis Group, was always meticulously made up and well-dressed. Therefore, her beauty was naturally more striking.
"I heard last night Amber arranged to be transferred to another hospital. You won't have to worry about her bothering you anymore."
Amelia nodded, relieved. "That's good."
Amber kept asking Amelia for news about Frederick's wife, and Amelia really didn't know what to say.
Moreover, after returning home yesterday, Rachel briefed Amelia on the situation in the hospital room the previous night.
Amber had likely moved to another hospital because she had lost her dignity.
