Chapter 163 Overwhelmed with Discomfort

She turned to the nurse Paul standing opposite her at the operating table and said in a deep voice, "Report Brittany's condition to Mr. Hastings."

The nurse nodded and reported Brittany's condition to Frederick, who looked heavy-hearted.

Soon, the operating room door opened, and Brittany was wheeled out on a hospital bed with a ventilator by medical staff.

She weakly opened her eyes, looking particularly frail and tired.

Amelia saw her fingers move slightly, so she walked over, gently took Brittany's hand, and comforted her.

"Grandma, don't be afraid. I'm here," Her voice was gentle as she spoke and followed the hospital bed to the intensive care unit.

At the door, Amelia paused, stood outside the window, and looked at Brittany on the bed in the ICU.

Brittany also turned her head to look out the window. Her lips moved, but no sound came out.

Frederick stood by Brittany's side, his expression frozen as Brittany couldn't speak.

The doctor had just told him that Brittany's condition could likely lead to paralysis or loss of voice.

He gazed heavily into the ICU, feeling a sense of unease and powerlessness.

Brittany was his only blood relative in this world.

Amelia and Frederick stood quietly by the window and stared into the ICU. After the nurse finished all the preparations, she walked out and quietly said to them,

"Brittany has fallen asleep, and I will be on duty in the ICU next. If you're worried tonight and want to leave someone behind, you can just leave one person."

Paul had been standing behind Frederick, and upon hearing the nurse's words, he immediately squeezed out from behind Amelia and Frederick.

"I'll stay."

Tom heard this and stepped forward.

"Let me stay. You and Mr. Hastings are too busy, and just back from Seaspring Valley City, you need rest. I've been serving Brittany for half a lifetime. If she wakes up and sees me, she might feel more at ease."

Frederick's eyes deepened, his tone serious and steady.

"I'll stay here tonight. Tom, you go back, pack up Brittany's things, and move it to the hospital."

Tom hesitated for a moment upon hearing Frederick's words but eventually nodded.

After the nurse gave some instructions, she returned to the ICU.

Paul escorted Tom back to pack up.

Frederick turned and sat on a bench not far from the ICU, his face heavy, seemingly lost in thought.

Amelia withdrew her gaze from the ICU, turned to look at Frederick, and moved her lips slightly, but in the end, she didn't say a word and turned to sit on a chair on the other side of the ICU, a few meters away from Frederick.

Frederick looked up at Amelia, who was far away, not knowing what she was thinking, her gaze fixed on the white wall in front of the chair.

"You can go back. I'll be fine here," he said with a low voice.

Amelia heard him but just glanced at him faintly and said softly,

"I'll sit for a while and then leave."

Frederick fell silent.

Amelia didn't speak again.

She sat there for most of the night.

In the early hours, Dylan's apology messages kept popping up on her phone.

Amelia had only been entrusted by him with a favor and had been subjected to such insults.

Although Amelia appeared calm and composed on the surface, she cared a lot about her failed marriage.

Dylan felt very guilty about it.

Only Amelia and Frederick remained quiet in the empty corridor outside the ICU, so the sound of Amelia's phone vibrating with incoming messages echoed loudly in the empty and quiet corridor.

Amelia briefly replied to Dylan and then found a message from Rachel.

She opened the message, and her eyes gradually deepened.

Frederick saw Amelia bowing her head to read the message. She did not know what it said, but it seemed to have captured all her attention. Even as he stared at her for a long time, she remained unaware.

With her head down, her serene and gentle eyes were fixed on the phone screen, and she seemed to be filled with longing. Frederick felt a complex emotion seeing this.

She was messaging Daniel!

She was chatting with Dylan!

He and Amelia had never chatted late at night before.

His eyes turned sullen slightly, and he looked away, choosing to rest.

But the constant sound of his phone vibrating with notifications made Frederick restless. He frowned and spoke coldly,

"Ms. Davis, you're disturbing me."

Amelia paused upon hearing Frederick's words and then put her phone away.

"Sorry..."

Before she could finish her sentence, Frederick interrupted her directly,

"Go back. Don't bother me here," Frederick said without even looking at her.

Amelia's expression stiffened slightly as she quietly glanced at the red mark on Frederick's chest and tightened her grip on the phone.

Her phone lay quietly with a message from Rachel.

"Brittany is seriously ill. If anything happens besides Anna, Frederick will have no blood relatives in this world. Amelia, have you ever thought about telling Frederick about Anna's identity? He may not be a good husband, but he would indeed be a good father."

Amelia stared blankly at the last message.

She had seen Anna and Frederick together, and the atmosphere between them was very harmonious, with Frederick being very accommodating to Anna.

So involuntarily, she imagined the scene where Frederick would find out that Anna was his daughter.

If Frederick knew the truth, Anna would probably be the happiest little girl in the world.

Just as she was lost in her thoughts, Frederick's cold voice brought her back to reality.

Amber had gone to Seaspring Valley City with Frederick, so Amelia no longer needed to guess who the owner of the lipstick mark on his shirt was.

"I won't disturb you here then."

Amelia slowly got up from her seat and walked toward the elevator.

She stood quietly in the elevator and glanced at Frederick sitting on the bench, still in the same posture, hands crossed, head tilted back, eyes closed.

The elevator doors closed, and Amelia lowered her head to reply to Rachel's message.

"He went to Seaspring Valley City with Amber. It seems they have reconciled, and Amber will have a child for him. As for our Anna, she's just my child, with no relation to him."

Frederick opened his eyes. Through the crack in the closing elevator doors, he saw Amelia bowing her head to reply to a message, her fingers typing quickly on the phone screen.

Frederick took a deep breath, feeling as if a wave of discomfort had swept over his entire body.
