Chapter 373 Layla Looked Down on Her
Sebastian was overwhelmed with anger, feeling a suffocating pressure building up within him. But he didn't dare act recklessly.
His position at the Kingsley Group was already precarious, so any mistake at this conference would surely get him ousted.
He tightened and loosened his grip on the wine glass several times but ultimately refrained from any inappropriate behavior, suppressing the turmoil within him.
Sebastian's attention was drawn to Charles, who directed his gaze towards him, accompanied by a provocative smile.
However, soon, Charles looked away and started talking to Rachel.
Sebastian's expression changed abruptly, and he clenched the wine glass tightly.
Suddenly, he realized something. The Kingsley Group had originally been excluded from the Yaradia and Kasfee conference due to recent issues, but after last night's dinner, Elbert hinted that Charles had put in a good word for him to get him back in.
He furrowed his brows tightly, not understanding Charles's intentions.
Noticing his uneasy expression and worried that he might act impulsively, Sebastian's assistant stepped up to Sebastian and whispered. "Mr. Kingsley, Mr. Lawrence is here."
Ulysses Lawrence was a foreign business representative who had previously collaborated with the Kingsley Group. Since he was present, Sebastian had to greet him.
Sebastian suppressed his emotions, looked at Jason, and politely excused himself.
Jason nodded slightly, watching Sebastian leave.
When Sebastian handed his wine glass to his assistant, the assistant couldn't help but notice the slight tremble in Sebastian's hand. It was a telltale sign of his suppressed anger.
After all, Rachel and Sebastian had been together for many years, and Sebastian had even started planning for their wedding. The recent breakup had left him reeling, unable to move on so quickly.
Sebastian's assistant, who had been working with him for many years, didn't believe there was anything between Sebastian and Clara.
Sebastian was simply extending a helping hand to someone weaker than himself, and the assistant couldn't grasp why Rachel was fixated on this.
Perhaps Rachel had long set her sights on the Wright family and Charles, wanting to develop abroad and reach a higher stage.
In the assistant's eyes, it appeared as if Sebastian had been nothing more than a stepping stone for Rachel's ambitions.
As Sebastian withdrew from Charles and Rachel's social circle, many who had been watching this interaction felt disappointed.
On the other side, Amelia, with Frederick's support, had learned a lot and even attracted interest from a few Yaradia business representatives who were keen on collaborating with the Davis Group.
After making the rounds, Amelia felt a bit tired. Although less than an hour had passed, she felt as if she had worked a full day in surgery.
Especially since she was wearing high heels today, even though the heels weren't very high, they were particularly painful for someone like her who wore flats every day at the hospital.
Frederick noticed her fatigue and put his arm around her.
Amelia took the opportunity to lean slightly on Frederick, feeling at ease.
Just as Amelia was relaxing, a slightly surprised female voice came from behind them. "Mr. Hastings?"
The speaker was using the Yaradia language, so Amelia assumed it was a Yaradia business representative. She immediately stood up straight, maintaining a polite smile, and turned around with Frederick.
However, the woman she saw after turning around didn't match the Yaradia appearance she had imagined.
The woman was dressed in a red dress, elegantly styled, exuding an air of sophistication and intelligence.
Amelia looked at the elegant and beautiful woman in front of her and felt a strange sense of familiarity.
"Ms. Murphy." Frederick greeted, wearing a polite yet distant smile.
Layla Murphy didn't seem to mind. Her gaze lingered on Amelia for a moment, a subtle emotion flashing in her eyes, but she quickly smiled again. She softly said, "Shirley returned to the country recently and joined the Hastings Group. How has she been performing?"
Layla's face carried a polite smile as if she was completely unaware that Shirley had not joined the Hastings Group.
Frederick's expression remained unchanged as he calmly replied, "Ms. Wright has not joined my group. Ms. Murphy, you might be mistaken."
Layla was momentarily stunned, her expression feigning surprise. She explained, "Really? I had a phone conversation with Mr. Johnathan Hastings earlier, and he said he had recommended Shirley to work as your assistant."
Shirley?
When Amelia heard the name, it sounded familiar. She then remembered that Shirley was the new assistant Rachel had hired, the one who had caused Rachel's car accident.
The woman in front of her was clearly Shirley's mother.
No wonder Rachel hadn't fired Shirley after such a mistake; it turned out Shirley had connections.
Looking at Layla's consistently gentle and intellectual smile, Amelia couldn't help but feel a strange sense of goodwill.
She interjected, "Ms. Wright is currently working at the Davis Group. The Davis Group and the Hastings Group have always collaborated."
Layla's expression became quite subtle upon hearing Amelia's words, but she quickly smiled lightly and said softly, "There might have been a misunderstanding in the communication. I apologize for the confusion."
As she spoke, she shifted her gaze to Amelia, glanced at her, and then looked up at Frederick, saying softly, "Regardless of whether Shirley is at the Davis Group or the Hastings Group, as long as she stays in Kasfee, I hope Mr. Hastings can take good care of her. She doesn't want to return to Yaradia; she prefers to stay in Kasfee."
Layla's words subtly hinted that Shirley wanted to stay in Kasfee because she had someone she cared about there.
As she spoke, her gaze was fixed on Frederick, making it seem as if Shirley's love interest was Frederick.
Amelia, ever perceptive, naturally sensed Layla's disdainful disregard. Anyone else might have turned to Frederick for an introduction, but Layla chose to deliberately overlook Amelia, not even sparing her a cursory glance. This blatant snub made Amelia feel a sharp sense of disparity.
After all, Layla's behavior was very proper and dignified. Being treated this way by a dignified person could only mean one thing: Layla looked down on her. Amelia couldn't help but frown slightly.
Frederick noticed the change in Amelia's mood. He tightened his grip slightly on her waist and politely said to Layla, "Ms. Wright is currently working at the Davis Group. Ms. Rachel Davis is over there; if you have any concerns, Ms. Murphy, perhaps you could speak with her directly. Although the Hastings Group and the Davis Group have collaborated for many years, I can't overstep my bounds to manage the Davis Group's employees."
Layla's eyes flickered when she heard Frederick's words.
Although Frederick's words were polite, they conveyed one clear message: he would not take care of Shirley.
Layla, though displeased, maintained a dignified smile and gave Amelia another look, her gaze carrying a hint of aggression.
