Chapter 417 Nothing Happened Between Them

"Later, Mr. Wright, Mr. Hastings," Rachel said, keeping it cool as she stood by the door, all calm and polite.

Charles gave a nod, then turned and bounced.

Frederick, on his way out, sneaked a peek upstairs, hoping to catch a glimpse of Amelia. No luck. He sighed and followed suit.

Frederick had planned to crash at the Davis Manor tonight but didn't expect Charles to show up. If it wasn't for Charles, Vincent wouldn't have booted him out. Charles totally messed up his plans.

Vincent watched them leave, then shut the door.

Charles heard the door click shut, paused, and glanced back at the living room door.

Frederick walked past him, muttering, "Mr. Wright, let's roll."

Charles shrugged and said, "Looks like getting into the Davis Manor ain't a walk in the park."

Frederick smirked, "Not always."

Charles chuckled and asked, "Got any tips, Mr. Hastings?"

Frederick raised an eyebrow and shot back, "If I had any, I wouldn't be leaving with you right now."

Vincent wasn't a fan of Charles. If Frederick spilled any secrets, he'd probably be the next one kicked out.

As the ex-son-in-law, Frederick didn't want to spill the beans in front of Charles before he got rid of the word "ex".

Charles gave Frederick a side-eye, seeing he wasn't gonna share, and said, "Yeah, seems like you've only got some failed attempts."

Frederick was momentarily speechless, feeling a bit ticked off by Charles's comment.

They chatted on and off as they walked out of the gate, exchanged some business small talk, then each hopped into their cars and took off.

After closing the door, Vincent took a deep breath and asked Rachel, "Rachel, you..."

Rachel looked at Vincent, her eyes serious. Before he could finish, she cut in, "Dad, I know my limits. I know what I'm doing. Relax, there's nothing between Charles and me besides work."

Vincent sighed, "I'm not trying to meddle in your business. I know you've always been sensible. Charles isn't a simple guy. I'm just worried he'll use you. If you get involved with him, you'll get dragged into the Wright family's mess. You should know that..."

Before Vincent could finish, they heard footsteps. He immediately clammed up.

Amelia, fresh from washing up, was coming downstairs. She saw Vincent and Rachel talking and noticed Charles and Frederick were gone.

"Dad, Rachel, what are you guys talking about?" Amelia asked, curious.

Vincent secretly sighed in relief and put on a smile, "Nothing, just chatting about your sister's stuff."

Amelia said, "Oh," and made her way down the stairs. Then she said, "I wanna hear it too."

Vincent's face tightened a bit.

Rachel rolled her eyes and said, "Why do you need to know everything? Go to bed."

Amelia plopped down on the sofa, poured herself a glass of water, and said, "I'm just worried about your love life, okay?"

Rachel chuckled softly, plopped down next to Amelia, and said, "Girl, you should focus on your own marriage first. Pop out a few more kids, and give me one to solve my retirement plan and my marriage issues too."

Amelia squirmed at the thought. Just imagining being pregnant made her uneasy. She quickly put her glass down, got up, and headed for the stairs, saying, "Forget it. I don't care about your marriage at all."

Vincent couldn't help but laugh at Amelia's reaction, "Anna's smarts are all from you."

Rachel smiled too and got up from the sofa. "Dad, you should hit the sack early. I need to crash too. Don't worry about my stuff."

Seeing Rachel say this, Vincent nodded. Even though he was worried, he didn't push it. "Alright, you both go get some rest. You have work tomorrow and need to be fresh," he said gently.

Rachel saw Vincent drop the subject and secretly sighed in relief. She headed upstairs with Amelia.

Amelia stopped at her room door, turned to Rachel, and asked seriously, "Rachel, does Dad not want you to be with Mr. Wright?"

Rachel's expression stiffened, and her hand paused on the door. She sighed, "Mr. Wright and I have nothing going on. What are you thinking?"

Amelia leaned in and whispered, "But Mr. Wright took you away that night, did nothing really happen?" Her eyes were full of curiosity.

Rachel took a deep breath and, under Amelia's probing gaze, tapped her on the head. "Nothing happened that night. And I took him away, not he taking me. And also, don't bring this up again."

Amelia paused. She had heard that Charles had taken Rachel away, but it turned out Rachel had taken Charles away.

She was a bit stunned and couldn't help but ask, "So that night you slept with Mr. Wright and don't plan to take responsibility?"

Rachel took a deep breath. "Amelia!" she called out.

Amelia quickly dodged into her room and said, "I was just guessing."

After all, Sebastian's reaction at the exchange meeting was so big that Amelia guessed that Rachel must have encountered some trouble at the party the night before, and Sebastian allowed it.

Seeing Rachel's change in expression, Amelia realized she had guessed right.

Rachel knew Amelia had made up her mind. If she tried to lie, she wouldn't be able to fool Amelia.

Rachel took a deep breath, looked at Amelia, and said seriously, "Nothing happened between Mr. Wright and me that night, but he did help me. I don't want you to bring it up because I don't want Dad to worry."

Amelia frowned. "Why doesn't Dad like Mr. Wright?"

Her question stumped Rachel, and she could only throw it back at her. "Why are you afraid of Mr. Wright?"

Amelia was taken aback and answered awkwardly, "I just have an unknown fear of strong people, especially strange one."

Rachel replied casually, "Maybe Dad thinks the same way?"

Amelia was silent. It seemed to make some sense.

Seeing Amelia's question diverted, Rachel secretly breathed a sigh of relief, opened her bedroom door, and went inside. She did not want to talk to Amelia any further, fearing she might reveal what had happened that night.
