Chapter 383 Anna Felt Very Insecure
The assistant saw Sebastian heed the advice and leave, letting out a heavy sigh of relief before following behind him.
Upon reaching the elevator intending to go downstairs, Sebastian spotted Charles emerging from the depths of the corridor, a cigarette casually dangling from his lips.
Charles noticed Sebastian's swollen face and cocked an eyebrow. "Mr. Kingsley, who hit you?"
Sebastian averted his gaze to evade Charles's penetrating look and replied in a subdued tone, "Nobody."
Charles quirked an eyebrow, took the cigarette from his mouth, and extinguished it on the side. He casually asked, "Do you need me to help you file a report?"
Frowning, Sebastian responded coldly, "No need."
Charles chuckled, "Your situation is a bit concerning. After all, Kasfee and I facilitated the exchange. If something goes wrong, I have to take responsibility."
Sebastian's assistant, hearing Charles's words, thought of the commotion caused by Charles and Rachel appearing together at the exchange this morning.
He couldn't hold back any longer and blurted out. "It was Ms. Rachel Davis who hit Mr. Kingsley."
Sebastian frowned at his assistant's words and snapped, "Shut up!"
The assistant had meant well, standing up for Sebastian.
If Rachel had indeed established a good relationship with Charles, her status would have risen.
Rachel had caused so much trouble for Sebastian lately, so why should she have been able to get away with it so easily?
Charles let out an intrigued "Oh?", and looked at Sebastian's face with interest. He asked meaningfully, "Ms. Rachel Davis hits that hard? Did Mr. Kingsley do something to make her angry?"
Sebastian's assistant, taken aback, quickly responded. "Mr. Kingsley has never done anything to wrong Ms. Rachel Davis. It's just that Ms. Rachel Davis has always been heartless. She used Mr. Kingsley to get to her current position and now wants to use someone more capable to advance further, so..."
Sebastian's assistant went on, not hesitating to slander Rachel. He was eager to disrupt any potential alliance between Rachel and Charles.
Fed up, Sebastian turned suddenly and slapped his assistant across the face. "Go get the car," he ordered, his voice drenched in icy anger.
The assistant was stunned by Sebastian's sudden slap and realized he had overstepped, so he lowered his head.
Charles watched the scene unfold and then smiled at Sebastian. "An assistant who speaks without thinking does deserve a slap."
The assistant looked up at Charles in confusion.
Despite Charles's smile, it failed to reach his eyes. It was clear that Charles didn't believe a word of what Sebastian's assistant had said.
Sebastian's assistant felt wronged. Rachel was indeed a heartless woman. Otherwise, she wouldn't have made Sebastian so miserable recently.
He wanted to say more, but Sebastian shot him a sharp look. He enunciated angrily, "I said go get the car."
Sensing Sebastian's anger, the assistant didn't dare stay any longer and turned to leave through the emergency exit.
Charles glanced at the assistant's back, gave a cold smile, and turned to walk toward the lobby.
After a few steps, Sebastian's voice sounded from behind. "Mr. Wright, whatever your intentions are with Rachel, I hope you understand that you are not her best choice. She won't choose to be with you," he said, his voice low and composed.
Charles stopped, maintaining a smile on his face while his eyes exuded an icy detachment. He shot back indifferently, "Mr. Kingsley, you should worry about yourself. I'm just not her best choice for now, but you are no longer a choice for her."
Charles left these words and stepped into the lobby. He approached Rachel with a smile and asked. "What were you talking about that made you so happy?"
Rachel smiled, covering the corner of her mouth with her hand, and whispered a few words to Charles, making his smile deepen.
Sebastian watched this scene with a dark expression, his face turning livid. He turned and entered the elevator, his expression twisted with resentment and unwillingness.
Just as the elevator doors were about to close, Layla blocked them with her hand. She stepped into the elevator with a kind smile.
Sebastian glanced at Layla, his eyes showing a hint of wariness.
Layla smiled and said softly. "I want to talk to you about your issues with Rachel, Mr. Kingsley."
Sebastian's wariness lessened significantly.
After Frederick brought Amelia home, he sat on the couch, chatting with Anna in his arms.
Amelia had yet to come home last night. When Anna woke up this morning and didn't see Amelia, she was a bit upset.
So, when Frederick talked to her, she was a bit sulky. It was only after Frederick's patient coaxing that the angry Anna spoke up. "Uncle Frederick, where did you take Mommy last night?"
Amelia was drinking water and choked when she suddenly heard Anna's question.
Frederick picked up Anna and walked over to Amelia, patting her back.
Amelia coughed for a while before stopping, her eyes watering from the choking.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Anna asked with a bit of concern. She stared at Amelia, mimicking Frederick's actions by patting her back.
Seeing her obedient demeanor, Amelia pulled her into her arms and said softly. "I'm fine. Are you not happy today?"
When they first entered the house, Susan had told Amelia that Anna hadn't eaten much breakfast and was in a bad mood.
Amelia had always been very concerned about Anna's mental health. She walked over to the sofa with Anna in her arms and sat down.
Anna pouted, first looking at Frederick, then at Amelia. She covered her mouth and whispered, "Mommy, if you marry Uncle Frederick, will you not want me anymore?" She spoke very softly, glancing in Frederick's direction as she asked.
Amelia paused, seeing the cautious look in Anna's eyes, and felt a pang in her heart. She mumbled, "Did someone say something to you?"
Anna blinked her pretty eyes, tears welling up. She glanced at Frederick and then whispered to Amelia, "So you really won't want me anymore?"
Amelia took a deep breath, holding Anna tightly in her arms, her tone very firm. "Anna, even if I don't want Frederick, I will not want you, understand? I love you very much, so don't overthink, okay?" Amelia reassured her.
A few days ago, Vincent had taken Anna to the mall. Anna, sitting in the stroller, overheard people in the same elevator chatting about a woman who had a child before marriage. After remarrying, her new husband didn't like the child, so she sent the child to live with relatives in a remote village.
Despite Anna's tender age, she already possessed a capacity for independent thinking. Relating this to her situation with Frederick and Amelia, she couldn't help but put herself in that scenario.
Recently, Frederick had been visiting Amelia every day, and they went out early and came back late, making Anna feel like Frederick was there to take her mother away.
So Anna hadn't been asking them to get married like she used to. Deep down, Anna felt very insecure.
