Chapter 48 Amber's in Frederick's Office
Barry halted immediately. "Mr. Hastings, do you have any other instructions?"
Frederick's emotion was not discernible. "After the agreement is drafted, bring it to me."
Barry nodded in compliance.
After work that day, Barry had the agreement drafted and taken to Frederick's office. Drafting divorce agreements had become a task he executed with ease since, for the past month, Frederick had him send a divorce agreement to Amelia every other week. The divorce agreement had been revised multiple times, with the sole intent of securing Amelia's consent to the divorce.
Upon delivering the document to Frederick's office, Barry noticed the discontent hidden in the eyes of the man seated behind the desk. "Your efficiency is impressive. is it because there's been too little work recently?" Frederick asked, a cold edge to his voice.
Barry paused, confused. "The company has had quite a few contracts lately."
"It's just that I thought you might need this particular agreement urgently, so I prioritized it," he explained.
Frederick turned away from the divorce papers, instructing coldly, "You may leave now."
With an awkward smile, Barry exited Frederick's office. Outside, he ran into Felix and immediately seized the opportunity to speak with him. "What's been going on with Mr. Hastings lately?" Barry asked. "Why is he in such a foul mood?"
Although Frederick had never been the most approachable, he wasn't as consistently stern as now, casting a significant tension across the company.
Felix exhaled. As Frederick's right-hand man, he bore greater stress than others. Having served Frederick for many years, Felix might not claim to fully understand his boss, but he had some insight into his mindset. Moreover, his uncle was currently employed at Hastings Manor.
He had already warned Felix that during this time, he needed to stay vigilant at Frederick's side and not make any mistakes.
Felix spoke in a hushed tone, "I heard Mrs. Hastings is planning to divorce. Brittany Hastings agreed, but Mr. Hastings doesn't seem too willing to let go."
After he said that, he gave Barry a 'good luck with that' look.
Barry stood there stunned for a while, now understanding the look on Frederick's face when he had delivered the divorce papers to his office.
Barry could only imagine that this was going to make Frederick particularly loathe him during this period.
He shivered at the thought and quickened his pace to leave the floor.
Amelia had waited another two days and still hadn't received Barry's divorce papers, so she called him again.
"Mr. Cole, where are the divorce papers?"
Barry was silent...
Clearly, Frederick hadn't delivered the divorce papers to Amelia.
"Mrs. Hastings, I'm truly sorry; I've been really swamped lately; I..."
Amelia massaged her temples, looking weighed down.
"Don't bother bringing them to me. I'll come to the Hastings Group directly."
Barry was silent...
Amelia didn't wait for his response, hung up the call, and drove straight to Hastings Group.
The receptionist, aware of Amelia's and Frederick's relationship, didn't dare stop her when she entered the lobby, but there were subtle glances directed her way.
After seeing Amelia in the elevator, the receptionist immediately called Felix.
"Mr. Cox."
"Mrs. Hastings is on her way up."
Felix's expression changed abruptly, and he hurried to the elevator doors to wait.
Amelia was clearly there to talk about the divorce.
The elevator doors opened.
Amelia stepped out and saw Felix with a respectful and polite demeanor.
"Mrs. Hastings..."
Amelia nodded and said in a soft voice, "I'm here to see Frederick."
Felix seemed uncomfortable and hesitated to speak.
Amelia frowned and strode towards Frederick's office.
Felix quickly extended his hand to stop her.
"Mrs. Hastings, you can't go in there right now."
Amelia frowned, "Why?"
Felix gritted his teeth and said in a low voice, "Ms. Roberts is currently in Mr. Hastings's office."
Amelia looked at the closed door to Frederick's office, her expression growing darker.
She took a deep breath, her face stiffening.
"Then take me to Mr. Cole."
Felix nodded, "Alright."
He gestured politely for Amelia to enter the elevator.
Amelia nodded and stepped into the elevator.
As the elevator doors closed, Felix breathed a sigh of relief.
On his way to the legal department, Felix secretly sent Barry a message with just one word: [Run.]
Barry, who had just returned from an outing, saw the message and quickly ducked back into his car and drove away.
Felix waited in Barry's office with Amelia for quite some time, but Barry did not return.
Amelia made several calls to Barry, but he did not answer.
Felix, standing to one side, spoke in a low voice, "Mr. Cole might be tied up with a case and unable to answer your calls right now."
"He's been so busy lately, practically living at the courthouse," Amelia replied, frowning deeply.
"Then let another lawyer in the legal department draft an agreement for me," she stated firmly.
Felix gave an awkward smile, "That wouldn't be possible. Mr. Hastings assigned this task to Mr. Cole, and he's the only one familiar with the terms."
Amelia's expression cooled, "Then I'll wait until the courthouse closes for the day, and Mr. Cole can work late tonight to draft the agreement for me."
Felix hesitated. Seeing Amelia's determination to see the agreement today, he wasn't sure how to respond.
After a pause, he found an excuse to decline, "Mrs. Hastings, rest assured, when Mr. Cole returns, I'll make sure he drafts the agreement for you first. I'll personally deliver it to you."
"You're staying at Ms. Rachel Davis' place, right?"
Amelia nodded, "Mhm."
Felix smiled politely and looked at his watch, "It's getting late now. Why don't you go back and have dinner? It won't be long before I personally bring the agreement to you."
"You don't trust me?" Amelia went silent for a few seconds, then nodded.
"Okay."
"I hope to see the divorce agreement tonight," she said, standing and leaving Barry's office.
Felix wore a wry smile. Now, in Amelia's eyes, his credibility and character had taken a hit.
Felix courteously escorted Amelia downstairs. They were using the employee elevator. When they reached the ground floor, Amelia walked out first, and just then, the doors of the executive elevator also opened.
Frederick, accompanied by Amber, stepped out of the elevator.
Amber noticed Amelia and greeted her first, "Ms. Davis..."
Amelia nodded, her face expressionless, as her gaze turned to Frederick.
As their gazes met, Frederick was the first to look away, glancing down at Amber by his side. "Let's go," he said curtly.
He took the lead, striding off immediately. It took a few seconds for Amber to unfreeze before she followed at Frederick's side. His pace was brisk, leaving Amber struggling to keep up with an uncomfortable feeling at her wound, her voice coming out faint and soft.
"Frederick, slow down. My wound feels a bit uncomfortable."
Hearing this, Frederick slowed his steps.
Amelia saw this, and a hint of mockery flashed in her eyes as she started walking towards the building's entrance. Her pace was very fast, and she quickly overtook Frederick and Amber. As she passed by, Amelia said in a low voice, "I hope Mr. Hastings will urge your staff to get me the agreement soon."
