Chapter 318 No One Was as Foolish as Her
Nicole saw the surprise on Amelia's face and grinned, "Yeah."
She turned to Amelia, who seemed stunned by the news.
After a pause, Nicole added, "He's Daniel's classmate, and they're close. You know him, right? Tell me about him."
Amelia hesitated. "Actually, I haven't talked to him in years. We only reconnected at the bar last time. He was great in school."
Nicole replied, "I know, but he transferred schools and his grades dropped. Even then, he was still better than most."
Talking about Jesse, Nicole's usual carefree demeanor softened, and she smiled warmly. Amelia noticed the tenderness in her eyes and felt uneasy.
But Nicole's happiness suggested things were going well with Jesse, so maybe she was overthinking it.
Amelia asked, "Did he tell you all this?"
Nicole nodded, "He mentioned it. I didn't push for details. But he's doing well now. I thought he was just a marketer at the bar, but he owns a home renovation design company. He works at the bar to get clients. That place is full of the filthy rich."
Amelia didn't know Jesse owned a company, so she just listened.
Nicole's satisfaction with Jesse was clear from her voice and expression.
Amelia felt relieved. She wanted to tell Nicole about her part in Jesse's transfer when they were still in the school but decided against it, seeing Nicole's happy face and considering it was her birthday.
They arrived at the pier, and Nicole parked the car.
Jesse saw Nicole's car and walked over.
A few others were standing on the pier. Amelia saw Ruth and Daniel.
Nicole had probably been spending a lot of time with Jesse, so she naturally became friends with Daniel and Ruth.
Jesse walked to the driver's side and opened the door for Nicole, his smile fading when he saw Amelia.
"Ms. Davis," he greeted.
Amelia smiled faintly, nodded, unbuckled her seatbelt, and got out.
Nicole took Jesse's hand, got out, and smiled at Amelia. "Amelia, everyone knows each other, right?"
Amelia smiled, "If you want to introduce, go ahead."
Nicole chuckled and introduced, "This is my boyfriend, Jesse Parker."
Amelia smiled, "Hello, Nicole's boyfriend."
Nicole laughed and patted Jesse, "Jesse, this is my good friend, Amelia Davis."
Jesse nodded, looking a bit uncomfortable.
Nicole didn't notice and said to Amelia, "I've officially introduced him, so you can't say I was hiding anything."
Amelia nodded.
Daniel and Ruth were standing on the pier. Ruth saw Amelia and tried to hold Daniel's hand, but he pulled away.
Ruth gritted her teeth and whispered, "Daniel, do you think avoiding me will make Amelia notice you more? She's smart. She'll choose the better option. No one is as foolish as me, only thinking about you."
Nicole, holding Jesse's arm, walked toward the pier, chatting away. Amelia quietly followed.
Ruth saw Amelia coming and grabbed Daniel's hand. This time, he didn't pull away. Ruth smiled and greeted, "Ms. Davis, good afternoon."
Amelia nodded slightly, "Mr. Vanderbilt, Ms. Gonzalez, good afternoon."
Her voice was calm, like she was greeting any other friends.
Ruth smiled smugly, holding Daniel's hand as they followed Jesse and Nicole onto the yacht.
Once on the yacht, Jesse covered Nicole's eyes with his hand. Nicole walked slowly, and inside, a cheer erupted.
The yacht was decorated romantically with flowers everywhere.
Jesse removed his hand, took out a ring, knelt on one knee, and looked up at Nicole. "Nicole, happy birthday. I love you. Will you marry me?"
Nicole covered her mouth, eyes wide with surprise.
The crowd started cheering, "Marry him! Marry him!"
Several people were from Jesse and Ruth's circle, folks Amelia had seen at the bar.
Todd was sitting to the side, looking bored. When he saw Amelia, his eyes lit up, and he waved her over.
Amelia walked over to Todd. He patted the sofa, signaling her to sit.
After she sat, Todd leaned close and whispered, "Amelia, is this Jesse your friend? What kind of guy is he? They've only known each other a few days, and it's already like this."
Todd had been busy lately, securing several endorsements through Frederick.
Amelia glanced at Nicole. Their relationship was moving fast—less than two months.
Nicole had met Jesse through her. If things went south, she'd feel responsible.
Todd noticed her worry and frowned, saying, "Jesse, my cousin has a bad temper. Only her parents spoil her; most people can't stand her. You've known her a short time and already want to marry her. I admire your courage."
Todd's face was smiling, his words sounding like a joke.
Nicole glared at him. Todd chuckled.
His teasing disrupted Nicole's mood, and she began to calm down. She and Jesse had just met, and talking about marriage was too soon.
Nicole said, "Jesse, I'll accept the flowers, but keep the ring for now. I'm not ready to be someone's wife yet."
The honeymoon phase could be deceiving; life would eventually return to normal. Rushing into marriage rarely led to happiness. So Nicole didn't want to gamble with her future.
