Chapter 374 A Shameless Mother Like You

Amelia naturally noticed Layla's unfriendly gaze.

After all, from Layla's perspective, she was the woman obstructing her daughter's potential relationship with Frederick. The hostility was almost palpable. Amelia met Layla's gaze with calm indifference, her expression showing no fear.

Layla's gaze softened a bit as she smiled at Amelia and asked, "May I ask who this young lady is?"

Although she was asking about Amelia's identity, her eyes were fixated on Frederick, clearly indicating her desire for him to introduce Amelia.

As soon as Layla finished her sentence, Rue walked over and took Amelia's arm, whispering urgently, "Ms. Amelia Davis, can you do me a favor?"

Amelia looked slightly puzzled, "What favor?"

Rue half-covered her mouth with her hand and whispered, "The representative from Yaradia I just met seems unwell. She looks pale, and there's a bit of sweat on her forehead. She might be having some health issues. Can you go over and check on her for me, help me make a good impression?"

Amelia followed Rue's gesture and indeed spotted a woman being assisted by her assistant, appearing visibly unwell.

Seeing that Amelia was hesitant, Rue immediately made a pleading gesture. "Ms. Davis, please, help me out, will you?"

Grateful for the excuse to avoid the tense interaction with Layla, Amelia agreed. "Alright, I'll go with you."

Rue looked immensely relieved and grateful. "Ms. Davis, you're such a good person. Mr. Hastings is lucky to have you." While praising Amelia, Rue seized opportunity to belittle Frederick.

After all, if it weren't for Amelia, she might not have even been able to enter this event today. Now, with Amelia's willingness to help, Rue's admiration for her soared.

Layla watched Amelia's departing figure in silence for a long time before retracting her gaze and looking up at Frederick, asking calmly, "So is this Ms. Davis from the Davis family?"

Layla's tone was indifferent as if she had no relationship with Amelia at all.

Frederick chose not to respond to Layla's question, offering only a cold reply of "Excuse me."

Seeing Frederick walking toward Amelia, Layla hurriedly spoke up. "Mr. Hastings. If you're choosing a marriage partner, our Wright family would be a good choice. You've met Shirley, right? She's gentle and likable. Even if you get married, she won't interfere with your private life."

Frederick narrowed his eyes slightly, stopped, and gave Layla a cold glance. He snapped. "You may not know me well. I like someone who keeps me in check. If my wife can't control me, what's the point?"

Layla's smile instantly disappeared upon hearing this.

Frederick's expression remained cold as he added in a deep voice, "I have no intention of marrying for alliance."

Layla's face grew rigid as she observed Frederick steadily approaching Amelia, her previously warm expression turning cold in an instant.

She took a deep breath to steady her emotions and glanced in Rachel's direction.

Rachel stood beside Charles, smiling gracefully and exuding an outstanding aura.

She remembered the last time she called Shirley, Rachel had suddenly taken the phone and spoken to her.

After more than twenty years, Rachel's demeanor had changed drastically from when she was a child.

If it weren't for her frequent appearances in financial magazines, Layla thought she might not have recognized her upon seeing her again.

Just like when she saw Amelia, she only found Amelia somewhat familiar and didn't realize that Amelia was her daughter.

Because when she left the Davis family, Amelia was only a few months old.

Rachel sensed that someone was staring at her, and this gaze felt different from when Sebastian had been watching her earlier. She turned and saw Layla standing among the crowd.

Seeing Layla, Rachel's eyes filled with mockery, and she looked at her with a cold, challenging gaze.

Layla frowned slightly under Rachel's gaze, feeling uncomfortable, and looked away.

Rachel, seeing that Layla didn't dare to meet her gaze, sneered coldly. When Layla left the Davis family, Rachel was old enough to remember.

She remembered Layla leaving despite Vincent's pleas, determined to go with Nicholas, even at the cost of abandoning her and Amelia.

Amelia was only a few months old, not even weaned, yet Layla left so decisively, without any hesitation.

She said that she and Nicholas were in true love, and she was just making do with Vincent. Nicholas had to marry his original wife due to family obligations, so he gave up on Layla.

When Nicholas came back for her, having gained full control of the Wright family, he wanted Layla to return to him.

Therefore, Layla abandoned everything and followed Nicholas to Yaradia.

All these years, she had never reached out to Rachel or cared about Amelia's situation. It was as if the two daughters from the Davis family had nothing to do with her.

"Excuse me, I saw an old acquaintance. I'll be right back." Rachel smiled, clinked glasses lightly with Jason, and walked toward Layla.

Seeing Rachel approaching, Layla's expression stiffened but quickly turned into a warm smile as she looked at Rachel. She said, "Rachel, it's been a long time since we've seen each other. With such a big change, I almost didn't recognize you."

Rachel looked at Layla and sneered coldly, "It's been over twenty years, so some change is normal. But Ms. Murphy, you haven't changed at all. Still wearing those dignified and proper dresses, making yourself look like a paragon of virtue."

Layla's face changed slightly at Rachel's sarcasm, and she looked at Rachel with displeasure. She defended herself, "Rachel, I had my reasons for leaving back then. One can't live their whole life for others; they have to live for themselves too. As a woman, you should understand how I feel."

Rachel sneered at Layla's words. "Live for yourself? That sounds a bit different from what you said years ago, Ms. Murphy. Didn't you say you'd die without Nicholas when my dad didn't want to divorce you? I thought you'd die when Nicholas passed away a few years ago. Seems like the love you pursued wasn't all that."

Layla's face darkened, and she glanced around, speaking coldly. "Rachel, you were young back then and didn't understand. The ideas your father instilled in you were wrong. This isn't the place to discuss this. If you have any issues with me..."

Before Layla could finish, Rachel stepped forward, her red lips close to Layla's ear. "I don't have a shameless mother like you," she enunciated each word with precision.
