Chapter 402 Maria's Grandparents

Frederick watched as Amelia hurried off, easily imagining how red her face must be.

He couldn't help but chuckle softly before removing his hand from covering Anna's eyes.

Anna watched Amelia run into the hospital. She tilted her little head and asked, with a curious look in her eyes, "Why did Mommy run away?" she asked.

"Your mother must be in a hurry to help out at work," Frederick replied with a soft smile.

Anna nodded earnestly. "Mommy really likes working."

Frederick looked down at Anna, nestled in his arms. "What about you? What do you like?" he asked.

Anna glanced at the front passenger seat. Resting there was a bag with bottles of formula that Susan had prepared for her. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she looked up at Frederick. "I like drinking milk," she declared seriously.

Frederick was silent. He had noticed her occasional glances toward the bag earlier and had guessed her thoughts, but she hadn't said a word while Amelia was in the car. Now that Amelia was gone, the time had come to act on her desires.

Seeing her acting so adorably, Frederick couldn't bear to refuse her. "You're just bossing me around now, aren't you?" Frederick teased, but his tone were affectionate.

As Frederick spoke, he glanced at Felix. Felix immediately understood, reaching over to the front passenger seat to grab a bottle before handing it to the back.

Anna's tiny hand moved faster than Frederick's, snatching the bottle from Felix and stuffing it into her mouth, like she was worried that Frederick might change his mind.

Seeing her quick actions, Frederick's outstretched hand froze for a moment before he helplessly pulled it back.

Anna smiled at him and buried her little head in his arms, holding the bottle with both hands.

Frederick's heart melted at the sight. He completely forgot Amelia's instructions not to let her drink too much milk, as it might spoil her appetite for meals later.

Meanwhile, Amelia returned to her office.

Jessica saw Amelia looking radiant and couldn't help but lightly mock her, "Dr. Davis, how things have changed. You're already messing around with Mr. Hastings, yet still willing to come to work at the hospital. What a rare occurrence."

Amelia's gaze fell on Jessica, a hint of curiosity flashing in her eyes. Jessica hadn't come to bother her for a while. What was going on today?

Amelia retorted calmly, "Dr. Brown, if you've been upset by something, you can talk about it for everyone to discuss. There's no need to take it out on me."

Jessica gave Amelia a dissatisfied look. A colleague beside Jessica tugged at her. With an awkward smile, she said, "Yesterday, Maria's condition suddenly worsened. It took a lot of work, but we managed to stabilize her."

Amelia frowned and immediately walked out of her office, heading to the treatment team's temporary office to review yesterday's report on Maria.

"Why was the medication dosage changed yesterday?" Amelia asked seriously. She immediately spotted the issue, and the expressions on the treatment team's faces changed subtly as they all turned to look at Jessica.

Jessica frowned. With everyone's eyes on her, she retorted, "What are you all looking at me for? The professors approved the plan I proposed. Besides, I only slightly increased the dosage on Dr. Davis's plan, so it couldn't have made much of a difference. It must have been Dr. Davis's plan that had a problem all along, so..."

Amelia narrowed her eyes and calmly interrupted Jessica. "Now is not the time to point fingers at each other. Let's organize a meeting and see what the professors have to say."

Amelia had left the hospital early, both yesterday and the day before. Now that Maria's treatment plan had caused her condition to worsen, a new plan had to be discussed.

After the meeting, everyone got busy. Although Jessica felt a bit resentful, she didn't continue to antagonize Amelia.

Amelia took some time to visit Maria. It wasn't Sandra who was in the ward this time; Maria's grandparents were also there.

Amelia had never met Maria's grandparents before. They didn't recognize Amelia either.

Seeing Amelia in a white coat, they instinctively moved away from Maria's bed to let Amelia examine her.

After yesterday's crisis, Maria was a bit weak. She looked at Amelia and murmured, "Dr. Davis."

Amelia nodded in acknowledgement of the greeting. "Are you feeling any pain?"

Maria gently shook her head.

Maria's grandfather, Elijah Diaz, sat in a chair by Maria's bed. He glared at Amelia when he heard Maria call her 'Dr. Davis.'

Maria's grandmother, Constance Richardson, also scrutinized Amelia, her expression filled with hatred.

After talking with Maria for a few moments, Amelia turned and asked, "Where's Sandra?"

Sandra had been by Maria's side almost the whole time since she had been admitted. She rarely left her side.

Constance's hostile expression disappeared, replaced by a smile. She explained, "She took a job as a caregiver at the hospital, so she's busy. I'll be taking care of Maria from now on."

Elijah interjected, "I'm Maria's grandfather, Elijah Diaz, and this is my wife, Constance Richardson." They smiled kindly.

Hearing their names, Amelia looked at them warily. After all, she couldn't forget what Rodolfo had done before.

Constance noticed the shift in Amelia's expression and grabbed her by the hand. The sudden gesture made Amelia's skin crawl.

The hospital security personnel were on patrol just outside Maria's ward. Seeing Amelia inside, they stopped and kept an eye out on her. Their presence filled Amelia with a sense of relief.

Constance looked apologetic. "Dr. Davis, I know my son did some bad things before and almost hurt you. It was my poor upbringing that caused that."

Elijah sighed deeply. "He made mistakes and should be punished. He deserved to be caught. We realize it may be hard for you to forgive us, but please accept our apology."

Constance choked up as she apologized. "Dr. Davis, we're really sorry."

Listening to their tearful apology, Amelia felt a bit helpless.

Rodolfo's mistakes ultimately led to his parents apologizing on his behalf.

Constance and Elijah were simple farmers, exuding honesty and earnestness. Constance's tearful look made it hard not to let one's guard down.
