Chapter 262 He Discovered Anna's Background
Her voice in the previous sentence could have been stronger in the latter one. Amelia felt a bit guilty about deceiving such a seriously ill old man.
Patrick's gaze also shifted between Frederick and Amelia.
He had never seen Frederick show such a gentle side to anyone. When Frederick walked into the yard holding the child, Patrick mistakenly thought it was Amelia and Frederick's child.
Now, Patrick understood that Frederick wanted to be a father to this child, which explained his patience.
Sensing the awkward atmosphere, Patrick cleared his throat.
He said, "Why don't you all sit down? I'll go make some coffee."
Felix interrupted, "Patrick, you rest. I'll do it." Having seen Frederick being ignored by Amelia all day, Felix felt a bit overwhelmed and just wanted to avoid the situation.
Seeing Felix head to the inner hall to make coffee, Patrick could only sit in the yard and smile at Amelia.
"She's confused now, Ms. Davis. Don't mind her," Patrick added.
Amelia gave a faint smile. "It's okay. I don't mind."
Laura stared blankly for a while before slowly speaking again, "You two aren't together?"
Amelia nodded. "Yes."
Laura looked regretful. "That's a pity. Emily in heaven would probably be sad, too."
Amelia remained silent.
Frederick stood aside, holding Anna, his gaze fixed on the quiet and reserved Amelia sitting next to Laura. He realized how wrong he had been in the past, and his heart felt a bit chaotic.
Amelia could feel Frederick's gaze on her, and she could even sense his complex emotions at that moment.
She was very nervous and guilty, worried that Frederick would discover the truth about Anna's parentage.
Fortunately, Patrick changed the subject.
Frederick didn't pursue the matter further.
Her anxious heart relaxed a bit.
Patrick asked some questions about Amelia's work and then talked about his illness. As the conversation turned to her area of expertise, Amelia spoke more.
When leaving the Lakoff family, Patrick stood at the gate to see them off, his hunched figure and kind face showing reluctance.
Amelia remembered the first time she came to Patrick's house. The yard was very lively.
Emily's students were also very respectful to Patrick and Laura.
Now, only Patrick and the ailing Laura were left in the yard, which felt somewhat lonely.
Frederick murmured an explanation, "I had previously suggested to Mr. Lakoff that they move to the Hastings Manor, but they were unwilling. The elderly have a strong desire to spend their later years in their own home and are reluctant to leave the village where they grew up."
Frederick added, "The people around them respect them a lot. If anything happens, the neighbors will notify me, and they usually take good care of them, so you don't need to worry."
Amelia nodded lightly. "It's good that someone is looking after them."
She bent down to get into the car and reached out to take Anna.
After handing Anna to her, Frederick got into the car.
Anna, sitting between them, was nodding off to sleep.
Amelia reached out to hold her, but Frederick was quicker and picked up the child.
She found herself holding nothing and looked up at Frederick.
His gaze also fell on Amelia. His deep blue eyes were filled with emotions Amelia couldn't understand.
It seemed like intense passion but also boundless regret.
Her calm heart suddenly tensed up again, and her eyes showed a bit of wariness.
'Can he want to discuss custody of the child? I won't give an inch when it comes to the child,' Amelia thought.
Seeing her guarded look, Frederick felt a tightness in his chest. The words he wanted to say stuck in his throat, making him very uncomfortable.
Anna slept soundly in Frederick's arms.
The two of them remained silent all the way back to the Davis Manor, each lost in their thoughts.
Felix, driving in the front, felt so awkward that his toes curled.
When they arrived at the Davis Manor, Anna was still asleep.
After getting out of the car, Amelia turned to Frederick. "Give me Anna."
Frederick didn't hand over the still-sleeping Anna to Amelia but got out of the car holding her, his voice hoarse as he said, "I want to go in and have a drink of water."
Amelia remained silent.
She slowly withdrew her hand and walked towards the Davis Manor.
Frederick felt a bit relieved and followed her with Anna in his arms.
Felix also breathed a sigh of relief, worried that Frederick would be rejected by Amelia again.
Felix carried the bag with Anna's daily necessities and followed them into the Davis Manor.
Inside, Amelia stopped in the living room and said to Susan, "Mr. Hastings would like to drink some water."
Susan nodded and quickly went to get Frederick some water.
Amelia bit her lip lightly, seeing Frederick enter the house with Anna, then reached out her hand.
Amelia asked, "Can you give me the child now?"
Frederick nodded and carefully handed Anna to Amelia.
As soon as Amelia took Anna, she woke up and rubbed her eyes, snuggling into Amelia, "I want milk."
Amelia looked a bit troubled.
Felix hurriedly searched the bag for Anna's bottle.
Just as he found it, Frederick took the bag from him with a gentle expression. He took out a thermos, washed the bottle, and made the milk with practiced ease.
Felix was stunned by Frederick's smooth operation.
Frederick was serious and meticulous as he made the milk.
Felix couldn't help but feel that Frederick wasn't just handling a bottle but a billion-dollar project.
Who knew that Mr. Hastings had the potential to be such a great father?
After making the milk, Frederick tested the temperature. Finding it suitable, he looked at Amelia. "Is this okay?"
Amelia looked at him quietly for a few seconds. 'You have already made the milk. Could I really say no?' she pondered.
She nodded slightly, and he handed the bottle to Anna.
Anna lit up her eyes as she took the bottle, thanking him in her sweet and childlike voice. "Thank you, Uncle Frederick. I like you the most."
Her sincere eyes and honeyed words softened Frederick's heart.
He gently patted Anna's little head, his movements light and tender.
Amelia felt even more alarmed, with a selfish desire to keep Anna away from Frederick.
Amelia bit her lip lightly but eventually suppressed this negative emotion.
Vincent returned from fishing, carrying a bucket, asking, "You're back?"
He saw Frederick as soon as he entered the house.
Frederick nodded. "Just got here."
Vincent smiled. "I had a good catch today. I got two big fish. Frederick, stay for dinner and have some fish."
Frederick agreed, "Okay."
Vincent added, "Felix, you too."
Felix nodded.
Anna wanted to see the fish and patted Amelia's arm. Amelia understood her meaning.
As she bent down to put Anna down, she heard Frederick say seriously to Vincent, "Mr. Davis, I have a few questions to discuss with you alone."
Amelia stiffened her face and felt a bit panicked.
