Chapter 74 He Wanted to See What She Was Doing
Upon hearing the news that Amelia was at General Hospital for a checkup, Brittany immediately rushed from the Hastings Manor to see her.
She had a heavy heart when she saw Amelia's examination report mention that she had signs of miscarriage.
Brittany had only found out this morning that Amber had hit Amelia yesterday. She had planned to visit Amelia at the Davis Manor, but she hadn’t expected Amelia to have to go to the hospital before that could happen.
Brittany’s presence scared Nicole so much that she could hardly breathe. She merely stood obediently by Amelia’s side.
After reviewing the report, Brittany's expression turned grave.
"Amelia, you should go home and rest. I’ll definitely seek an explanation for what happened between you and Amelia, and I’ll make sure that Frederick apologizes to you."
Amelia sighed inwardly, placating Brittany.
"Grandma, I'm fine. It was my own carelessness that caused the sprained ankle, it has nothing to do with him."
Indeed, the situation at that time had nothing to do with Frederick. She didn't need him to justify the incident either.
"Please don’t get mad about this. If you end up getting ill from it, I don’t think I could forgive myself," Amelia said lightly.
Brittany held her hand tightly and said, "You have suffered so much when you shouldn’t have to."
"Don't worry, grandma. I’ll take care of myself. All you need to do is to wait for the birth of your great-grandson in peace."
Amelia smiled faintly.
Afterward, they left the hospital.
Brittany watched Amelia get into the Davis family's car and then turned to Tom and said, "Have Amber come and see me."
Tom nodded.
Later, at Hastings Manor, Amber alighted from a taxi and had to walk along a private road to reach the house. As she approached the front door, she straightened herself up before pressing the doorbell.
The security personnel at the door coldly invited her in upon seeing her.
Brittany was sitting on a chair, drinking coffee. She didn’t even look up as Amber entered. The surrounding servants, however, stared at her with blank expressions on their faces.
The atmosphere made Amber very nervous.
She walked up to Brittany, suppressing her anxiety, and asked, "Mrs. Hastings, you wanted to see me?"
Brittany raised her cup and took a sip of coffee before slowly lifting her gaze to look at her. She had honed her sense of perception from everything she had gone through in her life. In addition, although she wasn’t angry, she appeared stern and severe.
Amber felt uneasy, but fortunately, she had already sent Frederick a message when she was on her way here.
She stood respectfully and cautiously in Brittany’s presence.
Seeing her current appearance, Brittany snorted lightly.
"Ms. Roberts, do you know why I wanted to see you?"
Amber shook her head.
Brittany glanced at Tom. Tom immediately took out a lawsuit and handed it to Amber.
He said, "Ms. Roberts, considering that you have not kept your promise, we have reason to take back the one million dollars that Mrs. Hastings gave you three years ago.
"You mentioned that you would proactively return this money, but during this period, we have not seen any intention from you to repay the debt.
"With that, you were asked to present yourself here today to discuss your plans on returning the money."
Amber's face suddenly turned pale. "I have been trying to raise money during this time. Mrs. Hastings, please give me some more time."
Brittany snorted. "Trying to raise money? You just started working, and your current salary doesn't even exceed two thousand dollars. Even with all the projected bonuses you’ll get, you won't earn more than 60 thousand dollars a year.
"Even if you don't eat or drink, it will take you decades to repay your debt."
Amber lowered her head and stayed silent.
Brittany said coldly, "Since you can't repay the money, you shouldn't have come back, let alone work at the Davis Group. All you did was cause harm to Amelia for no reason!"
Amber bit her lip and said, "Mrs. Hastings, I have a right to choose where I want to work. I will find a way to pay you the money that I owe you.
"Please don't use this as an opportunity to humiliate me."
Brittany sneered. "You still want to hold on to your pride, even now?"
Amber frowned and remained silent for a few seconds.
She knew that Brittany had never liked her, so when she found out three years ago that the Hastings family was in crisis, and Brittany even intended to break her and Frederick up, she asked for that money from Brittany.
Amber took that money abroad. She used some of it to study and invested the rest.
She wanted to regain her dignity with that money. However, she didn't expect her investment to fail, and within a year, she lost two-thirds of it.
For the past three years, Amber had been looking for opportunities to change her situation. However, her subsequent investments also resulted in more losses than gains.
Of the one million dollars she obtained from Brittany, only a couple hundred thousand of dollars remained.
A few months ago, Amber chanced upon an interview with Frederick in an international financial newspaper, and she learned that he had led the Hastings family back to its peak. So, she decided to return to the country, fully believing that Frederick still cared about her.
Amber composed herself and looked up at Brittany. She said, "Mrs. Hastings, I don't need to hold on to my pride for your sake. You have never taken me seriously since I started dating Frederick.
"No matter how hard I try, you’ll still look down on me. I have since realized that as long as Frederick cares about me, that's all that matters. As for you, no matter how you treat me, I won't falter."
Brittany's face suddenly turned dark. She picked up the cup on the table and spilled coffee on Amber.
"Do you really think you’re worthy of being a part of the Hastings family?" she said.
The coffee was hot, and Amber had put her hand up to protect herself. The coffee scalded the back of her hand, leaving an angry red mark.
This was the scene that Frederick walked in on. His face turned grim.
"What's going on?"
As soon as he spoke, Brittany threw the now empty cup at him. He reacted quickly, catching it with his hand to stop it from hitting his head.
He raised an eyebrow and placed the cup on the coffee table, then sat down beside it. "What happened to make you so angry?"
Seeing Frederick's return, Amber bit her lip lightly and said gently, "Mrs. Hastings is unhappy that I went to work at the Davis Group.
"Mrs. Hastings, if you don't want me with any of the Davis family members, I can resign, so you don't have to be angry."
Brittany sneered. "Where you work has nothing to do with me. If it wasn't for you hurting Amelia, I wouldn't have brought you here to disturb the peace of the Hastings family.
"Do you think Rachel doesn't know your purpose for joining the Davis Group? She kept you by her side just to watch you do stupid things. I didn't expect you to be so foolish as to have someone release the news of Frederick's secret marriage to her."
Amber's body stiffened. "I didn't do it."
As she spoke, she looked anxiously at Frederick.
There had been many rumors over the years about Frederick's secret marriage. Everyone speculated about who his wife could be. Frederick was already used to it.
He sat sideways in the chair, looking down at his phone.
On his phone screen, a message from Felix popped up.
[[Ms. Rachel Davis has been spreading news about your secret marriage with her. Should I handle it?]]
He saw this message and glanced at Amber.
