Chapter 450 Frederick Took Many Steps
Vincent could tell right away that something was up with Amelia. He frowned and asked, "What's going on?"
Amelia shook her head slightly. "It's nothing. I just haven't been sleeping well and have a bit of a headache."
Vincent quickly took Anna from her arms. "You should go lie down for a bit. I'll call you when dinner's ready."
Amelia nodded and headed upstairs. She lay on the bed, but sleep just wouldn't come. After a while, she grabbed her phone and started checking work messages—work was the only thing that could give her some peace of mind right now. Her short break was over, and she had to be back at the hospital tomorrow.
That evening, she received a call from Billy. She answered softly, "Hello, Mr. Rodriguez."
Billy's voice was calm. "Ms. Davis, I'm heading back to Tideport City early tomorrow. Since I'm rarely in Kasfee, I'd like to invite you and Mr. Hastings to dinner."
Amelia quickly replied, "I should be the one treating you. I haven't had the chance to thank you in person for telling me about Ken's whereabouts."
After some polite back-and-forth, Amelia insisted on treating, and Billy agreed.
After hanging up, Amelia booked a restaurant and then called Frederick. This time, he answered.
Amelia took a deep breath, feeling oddly nervous. "Frederick, do you have time tonight? We..."
Frederick cut her off before she could finish. "I have a dinner appointment tonight, no time."
Amelia was stunned and didn't get a chance to mention Billy before the call ended. She stared at her phone for a long time, feeling like she was back to three years ago. Three years ago, she felt just as anxious around Frederick. But she had promised herself she'd never fall into that desperate and sorrowful state again.
She calmed down, got her emotions in check, and went to freshen up before heading to the restaurant alone. When she got there, Billy had just parked his car at the entrance.
Seeing her, Billy didn't seem surprised she was alone. "Mr. Hastings is pretty busy these days?" he asked casually.
Amelia nodded slightly and was about to respond when she saw Frederick's car pull up. Frederick got out first, with Nancy following a moment later.
Amelia's heart sank. She quickly turned away from them and said softly to Billy, "I've booked a private room. Let's go inside."
Billy followed her gaze, frowned a bit, but quickly acted like he didn't see anything and followed her into the restaurant.
Nancy noticed them and raised an eyebrow, teasing Frederick. "Mr. Hastings, isn't that Ms. Davis?"
Frederick glanced inside briefly before looking away, his face unreadable.
Nancy noticed his expression and gave him a knowing smile. "Mr. Hastings, you're not going to ditch me to find Ms. Davis, are you? If you do, I won't forgive you. I just got back to Kasfee and don't know anyone in the business circle here. I haven't even met the president of the business association tonight. Leaving me alone would be a grave act of ingratitude."
Frederick replied calmly, "I won't."
Nancy smiled, "Good to hear. That puts me at ease."
In the private room, Amelia tried to hide her swirling emotions, forcing herself to focus on Billy.
Billy looked at her calmly. "My collaboration with Mr. Hastings on the overseas project has ended," he mentioned quietly.
Amelia blinked in surprise. "Why? Is it because of the public opinion?"
Ken had already retracted those news articles, and the surveillance video of Dylan going to the Kingsley Group had been released. Harold was now under investigation. Amelia had checked this morning and saw that there were reports about it abroad as well.
Billy looked at Amelia's confused expression and responded quietly. "No. I terminated it unilaterally because Mr. Hastings increased his investment, thereby reducing my share significantly. Additionally, the Rodriguez Group has been facing other issues, and I didn't have extra funds to invest."
Amelia listened quietly. Seeing that she still didn't get his point, Billy smiled faintly and added, "Mr. Hastings seems to be targeting me. I originally planned to invite you and Mr. Hastings tonight to discuss the overseas project."
Amelia was stunned for a few seconds and then asked, confused, "Why is he targeting you?"
Billy sighed and showed her a photo on his phone. Amelia glanced down at the photograph and saw the image of that night at the hotel, where Ken pushed her away and Billy, to prevent her from falling, steadied her.
"Maybe because of this," he said seriously.
Amelia gasped softly, realization hitting her. She took a deep breath and apologized. "I'm sorry for dragging you into this mess. I'll explain it to Frederick."
Billy nodded. "Trust is crucial in any partnership. I don't want Mr. Hastings to doubt my intentions."
After a brief dinner, Billy left, and Amelia, feeling a mix of anxiety and determination, walked back outside.
She noticed Frederick's car and approached it. Felix was waiting in the car for Amelia. Upon seeing her approach, he quickly got out of the vehicle.
"Ms. Davis," he said, looking slightly tense. "Mr. Hastings is still inside." Felix knew there was likely some conflict between Frederick and Amelia recently.
"It's okay," Amelia replied calmly. "I'll wait for him in the car. I need to clear up a misunderstanding."
Felix opened the car door without hesitation. "Please, make yourself comfortable, Ms. Davis."
Amelia nodded slightly and got into the car.
Frederick had made significant efforts for her during this period, and Amelia thought she should also strive for him in return.
