Chapter 458 You're Simply Outmatched

Casey's nosy look was getting on Susan's last nerve. She put down the fruit she was holding and shot Casey a glare that could freeze lava.

Casey quickly looked down, retreating into silence. "Sorry, I shouldn't have said anything..." she mumbled.

Susan gave her one last warning look, grabbed the washed fruit, and left the kitchen. Once she was sure Susan was out of earshot, she pulled out her phone and slipped into the backyard to make a discreet call.

After whispering into the phone for a few minutes, she came back to the kitchen and got back to her chores.

Meanwhile, in the kids' room, Anna was lost in her play. Susan walked in with the fruit and set it on a small round table. She noticed Amelia constantly checking her phone, looking pretty stressed.

Susan sighed softly and offered, "Ms. Amelia Davis, let me take care of the kid; you should go rest."

Amelia nodded lightly. "Okay."

She leaned down to kiss her daughter's forehead. "Sweetie, I'm just going to rest a bit, okay?"

Anna looked up and smiled sweetly. "Mommy, you go rest."

Amelia's heart ached at Anna's innocence. She knew she couldn't afford to lose her. She stepped downstairs, intending to talk to Frederick at the Hastings Group, but saw Vincent coming out of his study.

"Amelia, where are you going?" he called out, frowning.

Amelia paused, turning to face him. "I need to talk to Frederick," she said softly.

Vincent's serious tone barely hid his concern. "Let your sister handle it. You..."

But Amelia cut him off. "Dad, Rachel is swamped with company stuff. I can't keep hiding behind her like a kid."

The Davis Group and the Hastings Group had always been partners. Now that Frederick was deliberately ignoring her, their cooperation would definitely be affected in the future. So Rachel must have run into a lot of problems when she came back to the country this time.

Amelia felt bad that Rachel was working so hard. She made up her mind to handle the matter herself.

Vincent was momentarily taken aback, then he nodded and said with a smile. "Go ahead, take care of your business."

In the past, Vincent would never have let Amelia face such a challenge alone, but his failing health had changed things. He couldn't protect her forever, and he hoped this ordeal would help her build the strength to stand on her own in the cutthroat world.

Watching Amelia leave, Vincent sighed deeply, a mix of pride and helplessness swirling in his heart.

When Amelia got to the Hastings Group, she walked into the office building without any trouble. The receptionist at the door was still polite, but her enthusiasm seemed to have dipped a bit.

Amelia brushed off the weird vibe and took the elevator upstairs. She headed straight to Frederick's office.

The receptionist saw Amelia coming and looked a bit flustered but still greeted her politely. "Ms. Davis, Mr. Hastings is still in a meeting. Would you like me to show you around the company?"

Her smile was a bit forced. Amelia just looked at her quietly, then opened the door to Frederick's office.

Ignoring the suggestion, Amelia pushed open the office door, expecting to see Frederick. Instead, she found Nancy, comfortably seated in his chair.

Nancy's face lit up with a smug smile. "Oh, Ms. Davis, it's you. I thought Frederick's meeting was over," she purred, her tone dripping with fake sweetness.

Amelia's eyes narrowed. "Ms. Wright, you seem pretty relaxed for someone here on business."

Nancy chuckled softly. "Business talks are important, but if I can also handle my marriage, that's a good thing."

She stood up leisurely and sauntered over, her smile never wavering. "Why are you here alone this time? I remember you brought a child last time."

The mention of Anna made Amelia's expression harden. Nancy noticed and pressed on, her voice almost playful. "I like that child. We are indeed sisters from the same mother. For some reason, she feels close to me."

Hearing Nancy's words, the receptionist looked a bit surprised and asked softly, "Are you sisters?"

Amelia coldly denied. "No, we are not."

Nancy's smile didn't falter. "Since you say we're not, then we're not," she agreed with a bemused shrug.

The receptionist, eager to escape the icy tension, offered tremulously, "Ms. Davis, would you like something to drink?"

Amelia's tone was dismissive. "No, thank you."

Awkwardly, the receptionist excused herself. "I'll check how much longer the meeting will be."

Left alone, the tension thickened. Amelia sat down on the sofa, defiantly ignoring Nancy, who casually took the seat opposite her.

Nancy's demeanor shifted to one of predatory amusement. "Ms. Davis, do you still want to compete with me? You've seen Mr. Hastings' attitude toward me. You have no chance."

Amelia scoffed. "Ms. Wright, it's clear that Ms. Murphy taught you well."

Nancy smirked, undeterred by Amelia's sarcasm. "Everyone has the right to pursue the life they want. Besides, as far as I know, you and Frederick are already divorced. Why can't I pursue what I want?" She leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with malice. "Ms. Davis, don't blame me for being outmatched."
