Chapter 216 The Attitude of Keeping People at a Distance

After settling Kimberly in, Amelia returned to her room.

She brushed her teeth and lay down on the bed, and soon her phone chimed with a notification. Glancing at it, she saw a message from Frederick.

She picked up the phone and glanced at it; it was a message from Frederick.

Frederick: [Did you get to the hotel?]

Amelia looked at the message, intending to respond, but the image of the kiss mark on Amber's neck flashed in her mind. Her fingers paused, and she remained silent for a long time before putting the phone down.

On Frederick's end, he saw the typing indicator in the chat box, but after waiting for several minutes, no message was sent.

After a while, the typing indicator disappeared, and Amelia did not reply to him.

Frederick's eyes darkened slightly. He opened his contacts and directly dialed Amelia's number.

Amelia's phone rang. She frowned and glanced at the screen. It was a call from Frederick.

She swiped to answer and put the phone to her ear.

Frederick's deep voice came through. "Did you get back to the hotel?"

Amelia simply responded, "Yes."

Frederick could hear the fatigue in her voice and said, "I heard this patient's condition is quite tricky. Must have worn you out today?"

Amelia frowned, listening to his concerned tone, feeling an involuntary irritation. She thought that when they weren't divorced, he probably cared for Amber in the same way.

She took a deep breath, and her tone gradually cooled as she asked, "Mr. Hastings, do you have something important to discuss?"

Frederick was silent for a few seconds before answering, "No."

Amelia's gaze hardened and said, "If not, please don't disturb my rest."

Frederick's grip on the phone tightened slightly. "Amelia, I just wanted to talk."

Amelia's expression turned indifferent, and she asked softly, "What do you want to talk about?"

Frederick didn't say anything for a long time. Just as Amelia was about to hang up, his heavy voice came through. "I want to ask you if you studied medicine because of my mother. Did you fall for me back then?"

Hearing his questions, Amelia immediately realized that Frederick asking Kimberly to come down for breakfast first this morning was indeed premeditated.

Frederick, being so astute, couldn't have guessed nothing.

They were already divorced, and Amelia didn't want all those past matters to be brought up again.

She didn't want to lose too badly in this relationship.

An inexplicable fear of having secrets exposed sweeps over her.

Almost instinctively, she denied it immediately. "No. I didn't even know you back then. The path of studying medicine is so tough. If I did it for someone else, I wouldn't have been able to persevere. I chose to study medicine because I liked it and had aspirations."

After saying this, Amelia realized she had said too much.

The more she tried to explain, the more it might convince Frederick otherwise.

She bit her lip, then chuckled lightly and asked, "Mr. Hastings, are you misunderstanding something?"

Frederick was silent.

Amelia sighed softly, "Mr. Hastings, we are divorced. I don't want you imagining things that aren't there, feeling indebted to me. Mr. Hastings, I am not Amber. I don't need your pity."

"My feelings for you aren't pity, I..." Frederick's expression changed slightly. Just as he was about to explain, Amelia had already hung up.

He took the phone away from his ear, opened the chat box, and began typing a message.

Frederick: [Amelia, my feelings for you aren't pity. I just want to confirm some things.]

After typing the message, Frederick's well-defined fingers paused. Instead of sending it, he stared at the message, lost in thought.

Even if he confirmed those things, what difference would it make?

Was he going to tell Amelia that he had mistaken someone else for her?

If he sent this message, how would Amelia view him?

His past relationship with Amber was an undeniable fact.

Frederick took a deep breath and retyped the message before sending it.

Frederick: [My feelings for you aren't pity.]

Amelia quickly replied.

Amelia: [Mr. Hastings, I don't want to discuss anything with you other than your medical condition.]

Frederick stared at the cold message for a long time.

Frederick: [But I want to discuss it with you.]

Frederick: [Amelia, I regret it.]

He drafted these two messages but didn't send either, slowly deleting them letter by letter.
He stared at the phone screen, unable to type another message for a long time.

He felt an unprecedented sense of misery!

He couldn't see any hope at all about Amelia.

Amelia glanced at the typing indicator on the screen, then turned off the phone screen and tossed the phone aside, burying her head in the comforter.

As expected, she had a sleepless night.

The next morning, Amelia got up with dark circles under her eyes. While brushing her teeth, she checked the work messages in the treatment group's chat.

A message from her father popped up.

It was a voice message.

Amelia played the voice message and heard Anna's soft, adorable voice.

Anna: [Mommy, good morning. I love you. Do you love me?]

Amelia couldn't help but smile and replied with two voice messages.

Amelia: [I love you, of course.]

Amelia: [I love you the most.]

After sending the messages, she waited for a while but didn't get a reply from Anna. She then quickly tidied up and headed out.

Just as she was about to knock on Kimberly's door, it opened from the inside.

They exchanged smiles and walked to the elevator together.

Kimberly and Amelia chatted about Maria's early morning test results.

Amelia listened intently.

As the elevator doors opened and Amelia was about to step in, she saw Amber standing next to Frederick.

Amber saw them and greeted them with a smile, looking in good spirits. She asked, "Ms. Harris, Ms. Davis, are you heading to the hospital?"

Kimberly nodded. "Yes. Ms. Roberts, did you move in so early?"

Amber's expression was subtle. She glanced shyly at Frederick before softly saying, "I have a photoshoot early this morning, so I came over early."

As they spoke, Amber moved closer to Frederick, making room for Amelia and Kimberly.

Frederick's gaze was fixed on Amelia as she entered the elevator.

Amelia remained composed, standing quietly next to Kimberly, seemingly indifferent to Amber and Frederick's presence.

When the elevator reached the first floor, Amelia and Kimberly stepped out first.

Amber pursed her lips and said, "Kimberly, Ms. Davis, shall we have breakfast together at the restaurant? I heard the breakfast at Tideport City Hotel is really good."

Kimberly had long sensed the subtle tension between Amelia and Amber.

She smiled politely, declining, "The breakfast here is indeed good, but Ms. Davis and I have plans to join the other doctors from the treatment team."

Amber smiled slightly, showing understanding.

Kimberly and Amelia then walked away first.

Amber turned to Frederick, about to invite him to breakfast, but Frederick also walked away without giving her a chance to speak.
