Chapter 484 It Seems There Is a Barrier Between Them

Anna's eyes welled up with tears, and she bolted up the stairs, her heart breaking into pieces.

Vincent couldn't stand seeing her like that and quickly chased after her, calling out, "Anna!" He caught up to her, wrapping her in his arms as she buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing her heart out.

He spoke softly, "When your dad gets back, we'll have a serious talk with him, okay?"

Anna, who had been trying so hard to hold back her tears, finally let them flow.

She had rushed downstairs, thinking the voice she heard was Frederick's, only to see Sebastian instead. It just made her feel even more like her dad didn't care anymore.

Already feeling fragile from everything going on, the disappointment was too much for her. Seeing it wasn't Frederick made her feel even more lost.

Vincent carried her upstairs, whispering comforting words as her crying slowly eased.

Watching them, Amelia's eyes filled with unshed tears. The emotional weight of the moment was heavy, even affecting Sebastian, who looked unusually serious.

He then took a tissue from the box and handed it to Amelia.

"I'll talk to Frederick if I see him," he offered, trying to help. Amelia didn't take the tissue; she kept staring out the window. "No need," she said calmly. "Anna just needs some time. She'll be fine."

Sebastian went quiet. Soon, the sound of a car pulling into the driveway caught their attention.

Amelia pulled herself together, turning to Sebastian with a stern look. "Rachel's been really tired lately. Don't add to her stress with what just happened."

Sebastian, feeling a mix of guilt and discomfort, nodded. "I know."

But Amelia's eyes flashed with sarcasm, clearly doubting him.

Sebastian noticed and felt the sting. What he had done before was definitely out of line. It was all because of his pride. He wanted to explain, but since Rachel hadn't agreed to reconcile with him yet, he held back.

Rachel walked into the living room, her expression as indifferent as ever when she saw Sebastian. "Mr. Kingsley, let's talk in the study," she said, heading that way.

Sebastian stood up, looked at Rachel, and said in a deep voice, "I haven't eaten yet. Let's talk outside and have dinner together."

Rachel went quiet. Sebastian looked at her cold face and took a deep breath. "Ms. Davis, I'm giving you this project for free. Can't you at least treat me to a meal?"

Rachel paused, thinking for a moment before nodding. "Sure, but let me change into something else."

Sebastian nodded, feeling relieved.

He had been worried she wouldn't want to go out to dinner with him, especially after their serious fallout.

Feeling a mix of relief and anticipation, Sebastian watched her go up the stairs. This was a rare chance, one he couldn't mess up.

Amelia got up from the sofa, ready to leave, but Sebastian called out, "Amelia."

She turned, looking cautious.

"When you and Frederick had issues, I stayed out of it," he started. "So, please don't get in the way of Rachel and me. I know I messed up before, but I want to make things right. Besides your family, no one loves her more than me."

However, Amelia's response was sharp and cool. "A man's love is fleeting and often unreal. My sister won't put much stock in your love. If you claim to love her so much, would you be her unwavering support?"

Sebastian's face darkened a bit, showing hesitation. Amelia kept going, her words cutting deeper. "If you really want to help my sister through this tough time, back her with the power of the Kingsley Group. Would you risk everything for her?"

Sebastian rubbed his forehead, feeling the pressure. He replied seriously, "Amelia, you're oversimplifying. The Kingsley Group can't just become a stepping stone for the Davis Group. Your sister and I can move forward together."

Amelia looked away from Sebastian and didn't push the topic further.

Sebastian couldn't help but scrutinize Amelia. He used to think she was articulate but not aggressive. Now, Amelia seemed more like Rachel. Her words were no longer gentle but had become sharper.

He knew how to help Rachel through this tough time, but that would mess up the Kingsley Group.

Sebastian couldn't afford to do that. Rachel's ambition was too great. If he lost the Kingsley Group, Rachel would undoubtedly be with someone more beneficial to her in the future. And then he would have nothing. Sebastian didn't dare to gamble, nor did he want to. He couldn't fully trust Rachel.

Rachel soon returned, now dressed in a simple yet elegant dress, making her look less aggressive and more gentle.

Sebastian used to see this side of Rachel often. But in the past few months, he had only seen Rachel in formal attire, looking unapproachable.

"Rachel," Sebastian softly called her name, his tone filled with tenderness.

Rachel's eyes didn't change much, and she wore a calm smile. "Let's go, Mr. Kingsley."

Her formal address stung Sebastian, drawing a sharp line between them.

As they walked out, Sebastian couldn't help but feel the painful distance that had grown between them. He called out again, trying to break the ice, "Rachel." Then he raised his hand slightly, but Rachel's gaze passed over him without lingering.

Sebastian took a deep breath. When Rachel was by his side before, she was also unapproachable, but she would take his arm and walk into the crowd without hesitation, not hiding their relationship.

Now, Rachel was not far from him, but Sebastian felt he couldn't get close to her. It was as if an invisible barrier had appeared between them, keeping them apart.
