Chapter 340 Why Make Things Difficult for Yourself?

Nicole was speechless after hearing Amelia's words and remained silent.

Amelia pressed her lips and softly said, "I used to think Jesse got expelled because of me and felt guilty. But Ruth was the real reason. Jesse must've known this all along."

Ruth had made Jesse take the fall back then.

The Gonzalez family told Rachel that Jesse pursued Amelia and got her drunk on purpose.

Despite this, Jesse and Ruth stayed close over the years.

After thinking it over, Amelia felt she needed to warn Nicole. Jesse might not be as simple as he seemed.

Jesse wanted to get rich and had to rely on his connections. But his family was ordinary and couldn't help much.

So, he leaned on Ruth. The Gonzalez family, while not top-tier in Kasfee, was still better off than most.

And the Adams family was even more influential.

Nicole's parents were well-respected professors and held shares in the Adams Group.

Currently, Quentin, Nicole's cousin, managed the Adams family.

Nicole was the only daughter, and her parents planned to transfer their shares to her.

Like Amelia, Nicole wasn't interested in running a company.

She'd likely hire someone trustworthy to manage the Adams Group for her.

So, Frederick's warning about Jesse using Nicole as a stepping stone seemed plausible.

Amelia took Frederick's warning seriously.

Nicole was one of Amelia's few close friends, and she didn't want her to get hurt by a jerk.

Nicole was silent on the phone, and just as Amelia was about to speak, Nicole said, "Amelia, I'm sorry. Jesse talked to me about this, but I didn't realize it was that complicated."

Nicole continued, "He didn't know about what happened yesterday. Ruth bought the alcohol, and he didn't check it. He got caught and was beaten by Todd. Now, he's still in the hospital. I need to visit him this afternoon. Can we talk then?"

Amelia was quiet for a while, realizing Nicole didn't want to break up with Jesse.

Amelia sighed and softly said, "Nicole..."

Nicole cut in before hanging up, "Amelia, I get it. I'll seriously think about my relationship with Jesse. I'll see you at the hospital later. Bye."

Amelia sat silently for a moment before putting her phone away. She opened her computer to check her work tasks and patient reports.

After reading the reports, she joined the treatment team.

Maria's condition had been stable lately, thanks to Jessica's efforts.

Since seeing Frederick at the hospital, Jessica had stopped bothering Amelia and focused on taking care of Maria.

Jessica no longer challenged Amelia in meetings and mostly stayed quiet when it was Amelia's turn to speak.

The rest of the treatment team also treated Amelia more politely.

After a meeting, Amelia walked out with Kimberly. At Amelia's office door, Kimberly asked, "When are you and Mr. Hastings getting married? You have to invite me."

Amelia, confused, quickly replied, "Professor Harris, where did you hear that?"

Kimberly raised an eyebrow and said, "There are rumors around the hospital. This morning, Anderson mentioned that Brittany transferred General Hospital to your name as a betrothal gift, making you the major shareholder."

Amelia recalled Jessica's hesitant look after the meeting. 'So that's why.'

Kimberly patted Amelia's shoulder with a smile. "I'm getting old, and it's rare to see such a love story. If you don't invite me to your wedding, I'll be sad for days."

Amelia smiled helplessly. "We haven't discussed it yet. But if that day comes, of course, I'll invite you."

Kimberly was satisfied and was about to say more when she noticed Amber, in a hospital gown, approaching with something to say.

Kimberly found Amber familiar. "Do you need something?" she asked.

Amelia turned around at Kimberly's voice.

She saw Amber looking haggard in her hospital gown. Amber said to Amelia, "Dr. Davis, I want to talk to you alone."

Kimberly assumed Amber was one of Amelia's patients and let go of Amelia with a smile. "I'll get back to work."

Amelia nodded and, after Kimberly left, glanced indifferently at Amber before heading back to her office.

Amber quickly followed.

Amelia sat in her chair, and Amber took the seat opposite her. She quickly said, "Dr. Davis, I've asked around. Even though you're not in your original department, if I agree, you can still perform surgery on me."

Amelia sighed. "Ms. Roberts, we have no personal connection, and frankly, we have a significant grudge. You're not worth the risk of me violating regulations and risking my career."

Amber bit her lip, turning it white.

After a long silence, she said, "Dr. Davis, I respect you and don't want you and Frederick to have misunderstandings because of me, so I'm here to ask for your help."

Amelia paused her document review and looked up at Amber.

Amber stared intently at Amelia and said seriously, "No matter what, Frederick and I used to date. Do you remember how you performed surgery on me back then? If I go to Frederick, he will definitely ask you to perform the surgery out of our past relationship, and you'll feel uncomfortable."

Amber softened her tone. "Dr. Davis, if you perform the surgery, I won't go to Frederick and promise not to appear in front of you two again or disturb your relationship. I..."

Amelia's eyes turned cold, and she interrupted calmly, "Then go find Frederick."

Amber was stunned, then laughed bitterly. "Dr. Davis, why make things difficult for yourself?"
