Chapter 54 She's Not A Perfect Person Either
Amelia quickly composed herself and walked up to Laura's bedside. “Good morning, Mrs. Lakoff. Your usual doctor had to take the day off, so I’ll be conducting your check-up today,” she said politely.
Laura was chatting with Frederick when she heard Amelia's voice. She nodded in agreement, cooperating with Amelia's examination. As she described her condition, she couldn't help but take a few extra glances at Amelia.
Even though Amelia wore a mask, Laura recognized her.
"Did you really become a doctor?"
Amelia paused, realizing Laura recognized her and smiled.
"Mrs. Lakoff, long time no see."
Laura’s face lit up with excitement, "Well, isn’t that a coincidence."
"Frederick, this doctor is..."
Before Laura could finish, Amelia took a deep breath and interjected.
"Mrs. Lakoff, I know him."
"Mrs. Brittany treated me like her granddaughter. Naturally, I'd know him."
Laura paused, a hint of disappointment in her eyes.
"Is that so?"
"That's good."
With that being the case, it was best to leave the past unmentioned and avoid any awkwardness.
"Being a doctor is a respectable profession. It seems we still have destiny on our side."
Amelia replied with a smile, "I'd rather not share a fate with Mrs. Lakoff in that sense. I hope you stay healthy and never need a hospital."
Laura chuckled at Amelia's words, patting her hand, "That's a pity."
Laura's husband was Emily's teacher, and when Emily was hospitalized, Laura often visited the hospital as well. Over time, they became aware of Amelia's presence. Amelia had quite a crush on Frederick back then. Even Emily had tried to set them up.
Perhaps since Frederick didn't reciprocate her feelings, they never got married.
Amelia knew what Laura implied, but she just smiled lightly.
Frederick, overhearing Amelia's gentle tone with Laura, flickered with a trace of disdain in his eyes. She certainly knew how to charm the elderly. But he had never seen her make such an effort to charm him. Remembering how she had treated him the night before, Frederick felt gloomy.
Taking advantage of the break as Amelia examined Laura, he stepped into the designated smoking room for a cigarette. By the time he returned, Amelia had finished the examination and was leaving Laura's hospital room.
They bumped into each other in the hallway.
Amelia caught the faint scent of tobacco on Frederick and frowned.
"Try to smoke less."
She remembered that Frederick used to dislike smoking, but he seemed to carry the scent more often these days.
Frederick was surprised, his voice deep with a tinge of sarcasm.
"You didn't care before the divorce. Suddenly interested now?"
Amelia choked on his words for a moment, silently grinding her teeth before striding away from him.
Watching her deflated look, Frederick's mood brightened slightly. He stepped into Laura's hospital room. He could distinctly feel that Laura's spirits were much brighter than before. Amelia certainly had a way of cheering up the elderly. Both Brittany and Laura had shown a clear fondness for her. Maybe it was the fact that everyone around him liked her that had started to affect him.
Rubbing his temples, Frederick asked, “How long have you known Mrs. Lakoff?”
Laura replied indifferently, “Many years.”
Frederick raised an eyebrow.
Laura added, “Back when your mother was still with us.”
“She's a sweet and conscientious kid.”
Frederick furrowed his brows – sweet? Not in the slightest. Her attitude toward him was anything but warm. He suppressed the discomfort in his heart, and Laura tactfully did not continue the subject.
“Ms. Davis.”
Amelia had just stepped toward the office door when a gentle voice called from behind her. She turned around and saw Amber walking her way. Amelia’s eyes immediately sharpened with caution.
Amber noticed her wariness and offered an awkward smile, squeezing out a grin. “Don't be nervous, Ms. Davis. I didn't come to ask you about Frederick's wife.”
The tension in Amelia’s frown eased a little. Then Amber added, “I already know the identity of Frederick's wife.”
“You kept it a secret, Ms. Davis, and it turns out she's your sister.”
Amelia’s expression shifted as she observed Amber's self-satisfied demeanor, filled with confusion. Amber's previous alarm upon seeing Rachel had vanished, replaced now with a provocative smile as if she had caught Rachel in some misdeed.
“What are you getting at, Ms. Roberts?” Amelia asked flatly.
Amber simply smiled and walked past Amelia. “Like I said, I'm not here to talk about Frederick's wife – I've come to visit Mrs. Lakoff.”
“Let me not keep you from your work, Ms. Davis.”
Amelia cast her a glance and withdrew her gaze, turning to enter the hospital room. Seeing that Amelia truly wasn’t going to question her, Amber took a deep breath and said softly, “No wonder, Ms. Davis, even knowing about my relationship with Frederick, you never reproached me. You must have already known about your sister's affair, hadn't you?”
Amelia paused briefly, listening to what Amber had to say, suppressing a laugh.
She turned to glance at Amber's slightly triumphant smirk. it was clear that Amber had been feeling the psychological pressure from Rachel lately. Now that she had sniffed out a bit of news, she just couldn't keep it to herself.
With a faint smile and a calm demeanor, Amelia said, "Then you go tell Frederick."
After finishing her statement, she returned to her office.
Amber stood still for a while, eyeing Amelia sideways only to see that Amelia had already settled into her office chair, busily flipping through medical records on her desk.
Amber frowned and took a moment to calm herself down. She had been too hasty earlier. She shouldn't have spoken about these things in front of Amelia.
After composing herself, she spoke softly, "I won't tell Frederick. Anyway, Frederick doesn't love her. Their relationship is nothing more than a strategic alliance without any real affection, so it can't affect me."
Amelia's expression became slightly indifferent. "It seems that Frederick hasn't given you enough of a sense of security. otherwise, you wouldn't come to me with such talk."
Amber hesitated, biting her lip. "Ms. Davis, you've got it wrong. I'm aware of your sister's stature in the business world – she's fierce and resourceful. I need to have some secrets in hand just to keep myself safe."
"If she ever treats me unkindly, I won't hesitate to repay in kind. I'm just trying to protect myself."
Amelia looked at her coldly, her laughter masking her true thoughts. If she didn't know the full story, Amber's words might have fooled her.
Seeing the mocking smile on Amelia's face, Amber felt an inexplicable sense of inferiority envelop her. Biting her lip, she hastily made her way toward Laura's hospital room.
