Chapter 20 You Blame Me
Frederick looked over, and Scott fell silent. Not long after, Amber emerged from the restroom, with the attentive aid of her caregiver, Lisa.
Lisa noticed that Frederick's demeanor was off and was just about to explain herself when he spoke.
"You don't need to come tomorrow." His tone was indifferent, void of emotion.
Lisa paused, taken aback.
Amber quickly came to Lisa's defense. "I think she did a great job taking care of things. Frederick, don't be mad. Lisa already apologized to me. She just stepped out to take a phone call..."
Before Amber could finish, Frederick glanced at his watch.
"I'm off to the office."
He followed up, saying, "Felix will send a new caretaker later."
With that, he turned and left.
Amber stood there, her face showing a mixture of sadness and feeling wronged.
Scott, sitting on the couch, raised an eyebrow slightly. "He's always like that. It's nothing new to you. Why feel so wrong?"
Amber sighed and, with Lisa's help, lay back down on the bed. "Scott, you should head to work too."
Scott snorted, showing no intent to stay any longer, and stood up to leave.
As he walked out of Amber's room, he saw Amelia standing not far away, talking to a patient. She was very gentle and patiently communicating with the patient's family.
Amelia was perfectly made up, her skin delicate and soft. Scott couldn't help but take a few extra glances at her.
Feeling his gaze, Amelia looked up and caught his eye. Scott, hands in his pockets and with a roguish expression, looked away as she noticed him and left whistling a tune.
Amelia turned her attention back to talking with the patient's family.
She never had a liking for Scott, finding Daniel obnoxious ever since she could remember.
After work, Amelia got in her car and called Rachel.
Rachel answered, quickly saying, "I'm busy," before hanging up.
Amelia bit her lip, feeling a nervous twinge in her heart, and drove directly to the Davis Group. She had just arrived nearby when she spotted a police car parked outside the Davis Group building.
Frowning, Amelia parked her car and entered the Davis Group building.
As it happened, Rachel and the officers were coming out.
Amelia, seeing Rachel, froze for a few seconds, then hurried over. "Rachel..."
Rachel's brows furrowed just slightly upon seeing Amelia, her expression as fierce as ever.
"Don't worry. I'm fine. Just assisting with an investigation."
After speaking, she glanced at her assistant, so Paul immediately came over and pulled Amelia aside.
"Ms. Davis, it's okay. It's just a misunderstanding."
Confused, Amelia asked, "What kind of misunderstanding?"
Paul spoke softly, "There's some dispute about who owns the land on the west side of town. Mr. Davis had already funded the purchase of that plot, but some of the paperwork was still pending. Now, the Worthington family is claiming they own it, while the Kingsley family had put up money to buy the land from the Davis family but now can't use it. So, the Kingsleys are asking Ms. Rachel Davis for a refund, but..."
At the time, the Davis family really needed money, and although they invested the funds into the Davis Group, it was quickly used to cover a shortfall. Currently, with the Davis Group undergoing a transition, refunding the Kingsley's money was not something they could do right away.
Paul was clearly troubled as he added softly, "The Davis Group can't refund the money, so the Kingsley family filed a lawsuit, accusing Ms. Rachel Davis of fraud."
Amelia frowned. The Kingsley family?
"Wasn't the land sold to the Hastings family?" she questioned.
"It was Mr. Hastings who recommended that the Kingsley family purchase it," Paul clarified quietly.
Amelia took a deep breath, gripping her purse tighter. She was not well-versed in business matters and felt that Rachel had fallen into some sort of trap. When Sebastian had broken up with Rachel, it was quite unpleasant, and he would certainly use this chance to come down hard on Rachel.
"Ms. Davis, you should head back. We'll find a way to get Ms. Rachel Davis bailed out," Paul reassured her.
Amelia massaged her temples, visibly anxious. During the conversation, Paul glanced to the side and noticed a Maybach slowing to a stop at the curb. On closer examination, it seemed to be a car from the Hastings Group.
"Ms. Davis, Mr. Hastings..." he warned in a whisper.
Amelia looked over just as her phone began to ring. With a press of her lips, she answered the call.
Frederick's emotionless voice came through. "Come over. We're having dinner at the Hastings Manor."
Amelia inhaled deeply, ended the call, and told Paul, "I have to go."
With that, she walked in the direction of Frederick, who was waiting.
The Davis Group hadn't yet successfully restructured, so they were still in need of the Hastings family's clout. If this had anything to do with Frederick, it meant he was warning Amelia to face the harsh reality.
With a sigh, Amelia walked over to the car. Felix promptly opened the backdoor. Amelia bent over to get in. Frederick was already inside, lifting his hands slightly to adjust his cuffs. Amelia reached over to straighten them for him.
"Did you recommend that property in the western suburbs to Sebastian on purpose?" she asked softly. After fixing Frederick's cuffs, she looked him straight in the eye with her beautiful gaze.
Frederick smiled and nodded. "Didn't you want me to give the Davis Group a hand? Sebastian is rich, and Rachel has the property. It's perfect for everyone."
"You know full well that Sebastian..." Amelia started, but Frederick cut her off.
"Selling disputed land to Sebastian is Rachel's issue," he interjected.
Amelia was just about to plead with Frederick to help get Rachel out on bail when her phone rang. She frowned slightly at the caller ID and answered.
Kenneth's warm voice came through. "Amelia," he said, a little too affectionately, causing her to frown. The man beside her also looked displeased.
"This is Kenneth Worthington," he announced.
Amelia gripped her phone tighter. "I know."
There was a playful chuckle on the line. "Heard about Rachel getting taken in? Sebastian's quite heartless, huh? But no matter, my feelings for Rachel have never changed. Just tell her that if she is willing to marry me, the part of the western suburbs land that belongs to the Worthington family will be my engagement gift to her."
Amelia's frown deepened. "Why don't you tell Rachel this yourself? Are you scared?"
Kenneth was silent for a few seconds before he let out an awkward laugh. "I'm brave enough to marry her. Why wouldn't I be brave enough to say this to her face? Amelia, you underestimate me."
Amelia remained silent as Kenneth's joking voice resounded again. "If I can't marry Rachel, marrying you would do. I hear you're getting a divorce soon..."
Before Kenneth could finish, the man sitting beside Amelia snatched the phone away.
Frederick's face remained expressionless as he grabbed his phone, promptly ended the call, and then blocked Kenneth's number. Tossing the phone onto the seat next to him, he turned with cold indifference to Felix, who was sitting in front, and said, "Go bail Rachel out."
After he finished speaking, he shot an angry glare at Amelia.
"From now on, you're not allowed to answer Kenneth's calls!"
