Chapter 29 You Didn't Know Your Dad Was Discharged Today?
After getting ready, Amelia made her way downstairs.
Felix was respectfully escorting an elderly woman into the living room.
Amelia paused upon seeing her.
"Ms. Blair."
The visitor was named Madison Blair, Brittany's sister.
Madison's face showed little change upon seeing Amelia, without a response.
Amelia pressed her lips together.
Madison had never been too fond of her.
In the three years of Amelia's marriage to Frederick, the encounters with Madison were few, yet every time, Amelia could feel Madison's discontent towards her.
Frederick got up from the couch, and Madison immediately walked toward him, with a kind smile - a stark contrast to the indifferent look she had given Amelia.
"Ms. Blair."
"Please, take a seat."
Frederick gestured for Madison to sit.
Amelia slowly descended the stairs, standing quietly to one side.
Once seated, Madison turned to Frederick. "Where's your grandmother?"
His tone was gentle.
"My grandmother is in the backyard. I'll go get her."
He was about to head to the backyard, but Madison quickly took hold of his hand.
"I need to talk to you. Let Ms. Davis go," Madison's distant reference to Amelia caused the color in her eyes to fade.
Amelia looked up and met Frederick's inscrutable gaze, his emotions unreadable.
She shifted her gaze away. "I'll go."
Yet before she could turn to head to the backyard, Brittany, who had heard the conversation, came from there. Seeing Madison, she smiled and said, "Madison, what brings you here?"
Madison walked over and took Brittany's hand, a wide smile stretching across her face. "Frederick mentioned you haven't been feeling well lately, so he asked me to come and keep you company for a while.
"What's wrong? Are you feeling alright?"
Brittany, hearing this, shot Frederick an annoyed glance. His expression remained unchanged. “Aren’t you the one who’s been complaining about being lonely? Now that Ms. Blair is here, why aren’t you happy?”
It was no mystery to Brittany what Frederick implied. She was slightly displeased.
Madison began chatting cheerfully, holding Brittany's hand.
With Amelia and Frederick needing to head to work, they said their goodbyes to the two women.
As they were leaving, Madison looked towards Frederick and Amelia with a smile, "Young people don’t like living with old folks like us. You can't force them to stay. It only makes them uncomfortable.
"They need their own space."
Brittany glared at Frederick. He took his cue and said, "Grandma, with Ms. Blair here to keep you company, Amelia and I won't come back for a while."
Brittany let out a cold snort.
Amelia, of course, would follow Frederick's wishes.
The couple left Hastings Manor.
Sitting in Frederick's car, Amelia spent the whole journey gazing out of the window.
It dawned on her that Frederick was even keener than she was to avoid staying at Hastings Manor. That's why he had invited Madison to be with Brittany, so they would not have to return there.
After all, a stay at Hastings Manor meant that Frederick had no choice but to come home every evening to be accountable to Brittany.
Frederick had been raised by Brittany since he was a child, and she was an important family member to him.
Naturally, he didn't want to upset her or harm her health.
Upon reaching the hospital, Amelia opened the car door and stepped out. As she shut the door, she remembered the bracelet she had lost the day before and was about to ask Frederick about it, but he had already driven off.
Amelia stood still, watching Frederick's car disappear before her, her emotions swirling with complexity.
Amber was standing on the porch, watching the scene with a gentle smile on her face. She turned to Mina beside her and said, "Let's go back to the room."
Mina nodded without delay, supporting Amber as they walked back to the room.
Amelia rubbed her temples, pushing away negative thoughts, and entered the hospital.
She had two surgeries scheduled for the day and had no time for sorrow.
After completing her surgeries, Amelia emerged to find the sky was getting dark.
She returned to her office to find Frederick sitting inside.
Amelia paused before speaking, "Are you here to ask about Ms. Roberts' condition?"
Frederick seemed surprised. "Didn't you know Vincent was discharged today?"
Amelia was caught off guard for a moment. "I knew."
The man sitting across from her said calmly, "Vincent asked me to pick you up for dinner at the Davis Manor."
He glanced at his watch as he spoke.
Frederick had been waiting in Amelia's office for over an hour, and his expression showed a hint of impatience. He rose from his seat and started walking out of the office.
Amelia's phone rang. She glanced at it - it was Rachel calling. She answered while stepping out of her office and heading to the locker room to change out of her scrubs.
Meanwhile, Frederick was waiting at the elevator.
Amelia stepped out of the locker room, now out of her work clothes, and saw Amber's aide, Mina, walking toward Frederick.
"Mr. Hastings," Mina informed him, "Ms. Roberts had a fall during her therapy session, and it seems like her wound might have reopened."
Frederick frowned slightly and quickly made his way to Amber's room.
Amelia stood quietly, her expression subdued. After a few seconds, she slowly approached the door to Amber's room.
Inside, Amber lay on the hospital bed, pale-faced and enduring pain, reassuring Frederick not to worry.
He was clearly concerned for her.
Catching sight of Amelia at the door, Frederick ordered, "Come over and have a look."
Amelia entered the room with a calm face and pulled back the blanket.
Amber's wound was just below her abdomen, which made Frederick immediately turn away to respect her privacy.
Amelia examined the injury. "It's alright," she assured them. "The wound has torn slightly."
Amber spoke through the pain, "But it really hurts. Ms. Davis, will this have any impact on me later?"
Amelia replied with a sense of calm, "I'm not sure."
Tears immediately welled in the corners of Amber's eyes and began to slide down her face.
Amelia straightened out her clothing and glanced over at Frederick, who stood by her side. He seemed anchored to the spot, unable to leave. So, Amelia didn't say anything else and stepped out of Amber's hospital room.
Tonight, Nicole was on duty. As Amelia walked out, they bumped into each other, and Amelia briefed her on a few things.
Nicole glanced into Amber's room and saw Frederick sitting beside Amber, comforting her. A look of disdain crossed Nicole's face as she lowered her voice.
"Isn't your dad getting discharged today? Isn't he going to accompany you home for a bit?"
Amelia remained calm.
"He doesn’t have the time," she said. "I can manage on my own."
Nicole, listening to Amelia's extremely tolerant words, commented, "You truly are Frederick's wife, so forgiving and generous. If it doesn't matter to you, then you should sort it out as soon as possible. You can’t let this drag on."
Amelia raised an eyebrow but didn’t respond.
Noticing Amelia's somber expression, Nicole paused. "You're not...?"
Her voice slightly rose before she lowered it again.
Amelia gave a slight nod, confirming Nicole's suspicion.
She was going to have the baby.
