Chapter 453 She Can't Put Frederick First

Scott couldn't help but feel exasperated by Amelia's words; he never thought she'd say something like that. Clearly, she wasn't the naive, easily fooled girl he once knew.

Just as Amelia finished talking, the cab she called pulled up. She opened the back door and got in. "Goodbye, Mr. Sinclair," she said, her tone polite but distant.

Scott raised an eyebrow, watching the cab drive off. He got into his car and started the engine, deciding to follow her.

The cab driver noticed Scott's car tailing them and glanced at Amelia in the rearview mirror. "Miss, your friend seems really concerned about you; he's been following us."

Amelia frowned but quickly composed herself. "If he wants to follow, let him."

Curious, the driver asked, "Is he pursuing you? It's rare these days for a guy to put in so much effort. If you like him, don't hesitate, or you might miss out."

Amelia didn't respond, and the driver wisely dropped the subject.

They arrived at the entrance of the Davis Manor, and the driver realized Amelia's family must be pretty well-off, which explained her cool demeanor.

The security guards saw the cab and approached; they quickly recognized Amelia.

"Ms. Davis, why did you take a cab back?" one of them asked, remembering she had driven out earlier.

Amelia pressed her lips together. "There was a minor accident, so I took a cab."

The guard nodded, thinking it must've been a small incident since she seemed fine.

As Amelia walked into the manor, she reminded them, "Don't tell my dad."

The guards nodded, miming a zipping motion over their lips. Only then did Amelia feel at ease and head inside.

Scott parked at the entrance of the Davis Manor. After seeing Amelia go inside, he drove off.

He made a U-turn at the entrance, and the guards watched his car with curiosity. Why make a U-turn here instead of at the previous intersection?

Back in her room, Amelia saw a friend request from Scott. She ignored it and tossed her phone onto the bed.

Anna wasn't in the bedroom, probably in the nursery.

Amelia walked to the nursery and saw Anna asleep on the bed while Susan was lying in the adjoining room.

Hearing the noise, Susan opened her eyes. Seeing Amelia, she whispered, "Ms. Anna Davis was in a bad mood tonight; it took a while to get her to sleep."

Amelia noticed a hint of weariness on Susan's face; it was evident that Anna had been particularly difficult to handle tonight.

Even though Anna was usually a little angel, she could be a real handful when she was upset. Amelia whispered, "Thanks for your hard work. You can go rest now."

Susan nodded and headed back to her room.

Amelia sat by Anna's bed, gently stroking her cheek. Her heart ached when she saw Anna's eyelashes still wet with tears, showing she'd cried herself to sleep.

Anna, feeling the touch, opened her eyes. Seeing it was Amelia, she immediately started to cry. "Mommy."

With tears streaming down her face, Anna threw herself into Amelia's arms. Amelia quickly picked her up, patting her back to soothe her. "I'm sorry, Anna. It's my fault. I shouldn't have ignored you to deal with other things. I would never prioritize anything over you, sweetie."

Amelia's voice was thick with emotion, and Anna nodded, falling asleep on her shoulder.

Amelia carried her back to her bedroom, tucked her in, and then went to the bathroom to wash up. When she came out, her phone on the bed lit up.

She walked over and saw it was a call from Frederick. Taking a deep breath, she answered. As soon as she put the phone to her ear, Frederick's voice came through. "Are you home?"

There was an echo in his voice, making Amelia frown. "Yeah, I'm home," she replied.

Frederick was silent for a few seconds. Sensing her low mood, he tightened his grip on the phone but held back. He whispered, "I couldn't answer your call right away earlier. Amelia, I..."

Amelia rubbed her temples, looking at the sleeping Anna. She bit her lip, suppressing her anger, and cut him off softly. "Mr. Hastings, we're all adults here. Some things don't need to be spelled out. I get it."

Frederick was taken aback, realizing she might have understood his intentions. He felt relieved. "As long as you understand. I'll come to the Davis Manor to apologize once this period is over," he said gently.

Anna had been missing him dearly during this period, but he had to be somewhat distant towards Amelia and Anna in order to acquaint Nancy with the market conditions of Kasfee.

Seeing Anna's hopeful eyes and her reluctance to part today, Frederick felt his heart tearing apart. He worried that Amelia wouldn't understand his actions.

"Okay," Amelia replied indifferently and hung up.

Frederick stared at the ended call, dazed for a while. He rubbed his temples, thinking that Amelia's anger was understandable given how he had neglected her.

Once Nancy fell into his trap, he would go to the Davis Manor to apologize properly.

After ending the call, Amelia lay back on the bed. She had been under a lot of stress lately, but now that Frederick was out, she felt a bit more relaxed. Even if they didn't end up together, she didn't want anything bad to happen to him.

She closed her eyes, trying not to think about Nancy or Frederick. She mused, 'I can't put Frederick first anymore.'

Listening to Anna's steady breathing, she gradually drifted off to sleep as well.
