Chapter 57 In A Good Position to Advance

He looked at her with seriousness.

Amelia found herself at a loss for words, managing only a helpless smile as she said, "I was going to tell you to drive carefully and stay safe."

She hadn't expected that before she could even give him this reminder, they would be involved in a car accident.

Frederick nodded slightly and replied, "Alright."

"You should go inside."

Amelia nodded and started walking toward the hospital entrance.

As she reached the doors, she stopped and looked back. Seeing her glance back, Frederick waved at her before turning to get into his car.

Amelia hadn’t even had a chance to look away when she saw Amber approaching from the side.

Amber stood a short distance away, glancing between Amelia and where Frederick had just been standing.

Her face was full of confusion; it was clear Amber was baffled by Amelia and Frederick's behavior.

Amelia gave Amber a brief, indifferent look before turning towards the elevator.

Amber quickly followed her.

"Ms. Davis, did Frederick just bring you to the hospital?"

Previously, when Amber was in the hospital, Frederick would visit often, and occasionally, he would also bring Amelia.

She always thought it was just convenient for him.

But today, after dropping Amelia off at the hospital, Frederick left immediately.

He had no intention of visiting Laura.

A forbidden romance that would shock anyone immediately sprang to Amber's mind.

Amelia nodded in acknowledgment, keeping her composure.

Amber swallowed hard, unable to voice the question she really wanted to ask.

She stared at Amelia in silence.

The elevator doors opened, and Amelia stepped in.

Amber followed her inside but hesitated for a long time before finally speaking softly.

"Ms. Davis, you have a boyfriend, right?"

Amelia stood quietly in the elevator, showing no interest in small talk.

She knew Amber was mistaking Daniel for her boyfriend.
Amelia and Daniel were just friends. There was absolutely no need to explain anything to Amber.

Amber, seeing Amelia's silence, spoke softly.

"When do you and your boyfriend plan on getting married?"

Amelia furrowed her brow and looked at Amber.

"Ms. Roberts, are we that close?"

Caught off guard by Amelia's response, Amber stood frozen in the elevator for a moment.

The elevator reached the department, and Amelia stepped out first.

Amber followed closely behind. She wanted to speak to Amelia about her relationship with Frederick, but it was all just speculation on her part. Moreover, the mere mention of Amelia's boyfriend seemed to stir emotion in her. Amber was certain her guesses were not wrong, yet with no evidence, she thought it best not to speak too freely about it in Amelia's presence.

Amelia, sticking to her routine despite the unfinished business, went to check on Laura in her hospital room.

Upon seeing Amelia, Laura's face lit up with a smile.

"Amelia, you're here."

Amelia nodded with a gentle expression and approached Laura's bedside to examine her.

Amber, observing Amelia's tender demeanor, found it a stark contrast to her guarded coldness in the elevator just moments earlier. Amber sighed inwardly and turned her attention to Laura.

"Mrs. Lakoff, do you know Ms. Davis?"

"Yes," Laura replied. "Amelia is a wonderful young woman. If it weren't for you meeting Frederick first, she might have been his first love."

Laura said this jokingly.

The news made Amber's scalp tingle, and she stared at Amelia in astonishment for a long time.

Amelia, noticing Amber's shocked look, smiled.

"Mrs. Lakoff, your joking has really scared Ms. Roberts," she said.

"Those impulsive things we did in our youth really aren't worth mentioning."

Laura nodded in agreement, then with a meaningful glance at Amber, she added, "After all, Frederick is married now. Those things from the past truly aren't worth mentioning."

Amber had once approached the Hastings family during hard times, suggesting that if Brittany would pay her, she would leave Frederick. Laura had heard about this incident, too.

Thus, deep down, Laura didn't have a favorable opinion of Amber.
When Laura first got together with Patrick, she had faced some difficulties and broke free from the shackles of family expectations. She felt that Amber’s approach of seeking money was an affront to the sanctity of love.

Yet Amber managed to put on an excellent front in their presence, and Laura was unable to accuse her outright. All she could do was drop hints.

Amber bit her lip, her face turning pale.

Laura’s words not only negated the history between Amelia and Frederick but also dismissed any genuine feelings between Amber and Frederick.

Taking a deep breath, Amber remained silent.

Amelia, too, didn’t respond and proceeded to conduct a diagnostic with her stethoscope, speaking in soft tones, “Mrs. Lakoff, please refrain from talking for now. I need to run a check.”

Laura nodded, highly cooperative.

After Amelia had completed the examination and had been offered some advice, she left Laura’s hospital room.

Watching Amelia leave, Amber furrowed her brows and asked in a low voice, “Mrs. Lakoff, what did you mean when you said that Ms. Davis would have been Frederick’s first love if she’d met him before I did?”

Laura saw that Amber was still so concerned about everything to do with Frederick, which clearly indicated she hadn’t moved on. “It’s all in the past. If Ms. Davis has already said it's not worth mentioning, why bring it up?”

Amber looked a bit embarrassed and replied softly, “I’m just curious.”

Laura glanced at her and explained, “During the year your teacher was severely ill, Amelia frequently visited to care for him. She was very fond of Frederick back then and held your teacher in high regard. Out of respect for your teacher, she even pledged to become a doctor. That’s why I said what I did.”

Amber was profoundly shaken and in disbelief. “Are you saying Ms. Davis became a doctor because of Ms. Swift?”

Laura nodded.

Taking a deep breath, Amber suddenly remembered the year she and Frederick had gotten together. She had chosen to major in finance.

Frederick had asked her why she hadn’t chosen medicine.

What was her response back then?

She had said that she chose finance because she wanted to be closer to him.

Laura had taken her medicine earlier and was feeling drowsy, gradually closing her eyes to rest.

Amber, with a rigid expression and wanting to say more, noticed that Laura was resting peacefully with her eyes closed.

Taking another deep breath, she stood up from her chair, intending to get a glass of water to calm herself.

As she reached the water dispenser, her hand trembled while holding the cup, and she found it difficult to steady her emotions.
