Chapter 475 Be Displaced in Frederick's World
Layla saw the hesitation on Nancy's face and quickly said, "Nancy, you really need to think about this."
Nancy was staring at her computer screen, lost in thought. After a few seconds, she finally said, "I need to know Rachel's stance on this first."
Layla knew Nancy was always the cautious type. She used to think that was a good thing, but now it seemed like Nancy was being too careful and might miss out on some great investment opportunities.
Layla pressed on, "If we put in a big chunk of money upfront, Frederick will have to think twice about every move he makes after that. To dilute our shares, he'd need to invest even more. He'll definitely consider that."
Nancy, clearly annoyed by Layla's persistence, rubbed her temples and said, "No need to hurry."
Layla was about to argue back when Nancy cut her off, "What about Shirley? Have you talked to her?"
Shirley was working at the Davis Group and was a valuable asset Nancy didn't want to waste. They had planned to place her in the Hastings Group, but she ended up working under Rachel, which now seemed like a good move.
When Nancy brought up Shirley, Layla's expression darkened. "Shirley's on a business trip right now."
"A business trip won't last forever," Nancy said calmly. "Tell her to get in touch with me as soon as she's back."
Layla, clearly frustrated, said, "She's in Yaradia. Rachel wants to set up a market there, but something came up in Kasfee, so she went back to Kasfee and left Shirley in charge in Yaradia."
Nancy's eyes showed a hint of sarcasm. "Really? Rachel's just keeping Shirley out of the way. She knows about Shirley's connection to us and doesn't want her too close."
Layla frowned, clearly annoyed with Shirley. "Shirley's useless."
Nancy stayed calm. She looked at Layla and said, "At least in Yaradia, she can give us some intel and keep Rachel from taking over the market there while we're busy in Kasfee." She was worried Rachel might use her tactics against her.
Layla added, "Shirley's housekeeper told me that Shirley leaves the house until very late, and then she's back home before it gets dark everyday, almost as if she's on a paid vacation."
Nancy's eyes showed a hint of disdain. "No ambition."
Anyone else would work hard with such an opportunity, but Shirley was just lazy and useless to them.
Then she told Layla, "Go back to your room and rest. I have other ways to find out Rachel's stance."
Layla nodded and left Nancy's room. At the door, she couldn't help but remind her, "Nancy, we don't have much time. Make sure to seize the opportunity. I've talked to people who know about this project, and it's definitely profitable."
Nancy didn't respond. Layla glanced at her, sighed, and left.
After Layla left, Nancy closed the page monitoring Frederick's phone, put on her headphones, and played the audio she got today. Rachel had been out all day, so there wasn't much to listen to.
Finding nothing useful, Nancy turned off the computer in frustration. She picked up her phone to check for messages. Frederick still hadn't sent her anything.
Nancy bit her lip, thinking about the distance Frederick kept. Starting a conversation with him was always tough; he rarely made the first move. His attitude was polite but distant—not exactly rejecting her, but not welcoming either.
Feeling a mix of frustration and determination, she decided to send him another message.
Nancy: [I just talked to those partners. After today's incident with Ms. Davis, they don't seem interested in working with us. It's so frustrating. I had planned tonight's dinner as our first big move in Kasfee, but it ended like this.]
She waited for a bit, but Frederick still hadn't replied. Then she tossed the phone aside and went to freshen up. When she came back, there was finally a message from Frederick.
Frederick: [Sorry.]
Nancy pursed her lips, feeling the coldness in his brief response, longing for the warmth of speaking to him in person.
However, this only made her more determined to win him over.
Nancy thought about Frederick and Amelia's complicated history. Their marriage happened during a tough time for the Hastings Group, and Amelia had taken advantage of the situation. Their three-year marriage lacked affection and public acknowledgment. It wasn't until this year, when Amelia returned from Fondaniss with a child, that Frederick's attitude started to change.
Nancy knew the Hastings family's history. Frederick's grandfather, Salvador Hastings, and his parents were all deeply loyal to their marriages. With a child now in the picture, Frederick would naturally reassess his marriage with Amelia, driven by duty as much as personal ambition. But Nancy believed Frederick would want both the child and the advantages as a businessman.
Nancy: [Mr. Hastings, could you help me arrange another meeting with those partners? I'm worried they might be a bit miffed at me. I want to apologize to them in person. Even if we can't work together in the future, we can at least be friends. After all, I'm staying in Kasfee and don't want my image to be damaged so quickly.]
She deliberately emphasized Amelia's role in the awkward situation, knowing Frederick couldn't refuse such a reasonable request. Sure enough, the next second, Frederick replied with more than just a single word this time.
Frederick: [Once this storm passes, I'll help you arrange a meeting with them.]
Nancy's lips curled into a slight smile. Thinking of Amelia's jealous behavior at the dinner, a hint of mockery flashed in her eyes.
She could play the long game, advancing step by step, while Amelia would be gradually pushed out of Frederick's world.
