Chapter 37 Meeting the Person

Mary couldn't decipher Frederick's emotions and stared at him intently for several seconds.

"Mr. Hastings, don't you intend to bring Mrs. Hastings back?" she inquired.
Frederick spoke calmly, "Didn't she say she was just going to stay for a few days?"

Mary let out a sigh, her face showing urgency. "Mr. Hastings, you and Mrs. Hastings have been having constant conflicts recently. If Mrs. Hastings stays at Ms. Rachel Davis's place for a few days to cool down and decides not to come back, wouldn't you care?"

Frederick paused. After a few seconds, he picked up the pack of cigarettes on the table, drew one out, and lit it with his head bowed.

"I wouldn't care," he said indifferently, his face expressionless.

Mary stood by, at a loss for words.

Frederick, with a cigarette between his lips, rose from the couch, grabbed his coat from the side, and walked out of the living room.

Helpless, Mary could only watch as Frederick left.

After he left, a call came through from Hastings Manor.

Brittany was calling to inquire about the situation between Frederick and Amelia.

Mary hemmed and hawed, unsure of what to say.

Brittany could sense there were some issues from Mary's demeanor. "Let it be," she said heavily before hanging up the call.

The next day, Amelia woke up.

She had slept poorly the night before, constantly waking up in the middle of it.

Upon waking, Amelia couldn't help but reach for her phone to see if Frederick had called or sent her a message.

But, to her disappointment, there was nothing.

She hadn't returned home all night, and even where she was didn't seem to matter to him.

Amelia felt a sense of defeat.

During their three years of marriage, they had shared the same home for over a thousand days. Even a dog would develop an attachment in that time, she thought.

She rubbed her forehead, pressing down her negative emotions, and after tidying up a bit, stepped out of the bedroom.

In the kitchen, Rachel was frying eggs.

Amelia walked over to help.

But as soon as the smell of the cooking oil reached her, she felt a spasm in her stomach and couldn't help retching.

Hearing the noise, Rachel turned around to find Amelia leaning against the wall in distress.

After pausing for a moment, Rachel immediately turned off the stove.

"What's wrong?" she asked as she walked over, patting Amelia's back with a growing concern in her eyes, then retracted her hand to pour a glass of water.

After drinking the water, Amelia felt much better.

She sat down at a dining chair, facing Rachel's piercing gaze, and for a moment, she didn't know how to explain.

Hesitantly, Amelia lowered her head.

Rachel watched her for a while, then withdrew her gaze without asking any questions. She went back into the kitchen, turned off the heat, and served a bowl of oatmeal porridge in front of Amelia.

"Eat up. I'll take you to the hospital in a bit."
Amelia nodded, taking small bites of her oatmeal.

"Have you discussed the divorce with Frederick yet?"

Amelia shook her head. "Not yet, but I plan to draft a divorce agreement and then go find him."

Rachel nodded. "Okay."

Nowadays, no lawyer dared to go to court against Frederick.

However, drafting a divorce agreement for Amelia was still a simple task.

Rachel had intended to make Frederick suffer, but now the situation was different.

Amelia was puzzled by Rachel's too-crisp response.

"Rachel, about the divorce... the company won't be affected, will it?"

Rachel set down her soup spoon, speaking leisurely, "The company won't be affected at all."

"The company's initial transformation is complete, and we've managed to sell off the lingering properties. The debt issues have also been resolved."

While the Davis Group couldn't return to its glory days yet, it had at least avoided bankruptcy.

Amelia didn't understand the intricacies of the company's operations, but seeing Rachel so confident, she stopped worrying about it.

"So you go ahead and divorce Frederick if that's what you want."

Rachel said, pausing for a moment, her lips curving into a sly smile.

She was eager to see Frederick's regret.

Supported by Rachel, Amelia nodded earnestly.

With no reason to look back, there was no need for her to continue in this marriage.

Without Amelia, Frederick and Amber could live their love-filled lives together.

After breakfast, Rachel drove Amelia to the hospital and stayed with her until she reached her office before leaving.

"You're working too much in this department, and it's taxing on your health. You should consider either changing jobs or taking some time off," Rachel advised seriously.

Amelia nodded solemnly. "I've been thinking about it lately."

"If you need anything, call me. I'm off to the company now," said Rachel.

Amelia watched Rachel enter the elevator and then return to her office to start work.

When the elevator reached the ground floor, Rachel stepped out and immediately saw a familiar face.

Amber, looking haggard, walked into the hospital, heading toward the elevator bay.

As Amber lifted her eyes, she saw a strikingly beautiful woman with captivating features. The woman's presence was so remarkable that everywhere she passed seemed dull in comparison, making it hard not to focus on her.

Amber felt a tinge of familiarity in the woman's face and couldn't help but look a few extra times.

Rachel stopped beside Amber, her tone gentle. "Ms. Roberts?"
Amber paused momentarily, a touch of quizzicality in her eyes. "Who are you?"

Rachel looked Amber up and down with unabashed scrutiny, a wry smile playing on her lips as she said ironically, "You don't know me, but I've only seen you in pictures. I guess today I'm fortunate enough to meet the legendary Frederick's first love."

At the mention of this, Amber's face took on a sudden change, casting a more gaunt appearance to her features.

Rachel didn't linger or speak further, she simply strolled by Amber, her demeanor aloof and indifferent, giving off an air of "that's all there is to it."

Amber stiffened. Although Rachel hadn't uttered any explicit cruelty, Amber felt a sense of humiliation she had never experienced before.

Nicole, catching sight of Rachel conversing with Amber, paused in her stride.

She was long-time friends with Amelia and was somewhat acquainted with Rachel's character.

Rachel was known to be fiercely protective of her kin and companions.

Whatever Rachel had said to Amber, it had been a brief clash, with Amber clearly coming out on the losing end.

Nicole, observing Amber in her pitiable state, wished she could capture the moment to share with Amelia.

Amber stood frozen for a good while before snapping back to reality, suddenly turning to seek out that retreating figure, only to find no trace.

She clenched her jaw tightly, her hands at her sides now balled into fists.

As the elevator doors opened, Nicole glanced at Amber, "Ms. Roberts, are you coming?"

Amber nodded vigorously, "Yes!"

Nicole shifted to make room for her.

Amber quickly stepped into the elevator, and upon exiting, she made a beeline for Amelia's office.

Amber's pace was swift. She disregarded her physical pain, driven by the need to get answers from Amelia.
