Chapter 39 That Kid Has No Luck
Frederick regarded her for a few seconds, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Did you find it comfortable staying at Rachel's house last night?" Amelia paused, her face expressionless as she replied, "How could I possibly be uncomfortable?"
Frederick did not respond right away, continuing to look at Amelia. His deep voice carried a touch of mockery as he observed her composed face. "Didn't you find the bed at Rachel's place uncomfortable?"
Amelia's lips pressed together as she answered, "That's a minor issue. I can deal with it." Frederick laughed coldly, "I heard Rachel doesn't have a maid. Do you want to bring Mary over?"
She declined instantly. "No, Rachel wouldn't like having someone she's not familiar with at her place."
Frederick's scoff was sharp as he stepped closer. "How long do you plan to stay there?" Amelia's composure wavered as she dodged his gaze, "That depends on the situation."
He didn't press further, pulling his gaze away from her. "All right, I'm headed back to the office. Let Amber make her own decisions." Amelia didn't respond as he turned and left her office.
Amelia exhaled deeply, massaging her eyebrows. She sat down, booted up her computer, and composed a letter of resignation. Before leaving work, she handed her resignation to the hospital director.
The news shocked the doctors in her department immediately. The director's face was filled with disbelief upon seeing Amelia's letter. Amelia was, after all, Brittany's god-granddaughter. Despite her youth, she was a highly skilled physician and practically the backbone of the department. She was undoubtedly destined to be part of the hospital's administration.
Her sudden resignation caught everyone off guard.
The department head, Ralap, even hastily concluded the meeting and headed to Amelia's office.
"Ms. Davis, why didn't you discuss your resignation with me in advance? Has the surgery workload been too much for you lately, making it hard on your health?"
He paused, then added, "If that's the case, you can talk to me. You can take some time off."
Amelia's reputation in the department had always been stellar, and Ralap truly didn't want her to leave.
Amelia smiled gently, her manner humble.
"Mr. Zepho, I've decided to resign due to personal reasons. I plan to study abroad for a while."
Hearing this, Ralap quickly said, "That's excellent. The hospital can fund your studies overseas. After some time, you could return and continue..."
Ralap stopped mid-sentence when he noticed that there was no hesitation in Amelia's expression.
"Do you plan to open your own hospital after you return with your new skills?"
Amelia had no intention of doing so, but she didn't deny it either.
One reason she wanted to study abroad during her pregnancy was to avoid Frederick and to enhance her skills and knowledge simultaneously.
Ralap sighed softly, suddenly unsure how to retain Amelia.
After all, once Amelia left General Hospital, she was bound to have better prospects.
"Ms. Davis, you've been too modest in the past. We didn't even know about your impressive family background."
They had been unaware of Amelia's connection to Brittany.
And they had only recently learned that Amelia's family business was actually Kasfee's century-old enterprise.
Amelia said with a smile, "Regardless of my background, at the hospital, I'm Ms. Davis, here to serve the patients."
Ralap didn't know what to say, so he simply waved his hand. "You can leave for the day. Please make sure to complete the transition with Ms. Adams in the next couple of weeks."
Amelia nodded, agreeing, "Alright."
Nicole had just finished surgery when she learned of Amelia's resignation.
She immediately made her way to Amelia's office.
Seeing Amelia talking with Ralap, she took a deep breath and said, "It's such a pity. You had a great chance at a promotion later this year."
Amelia didn't care about that.
"In the meantime, I might need your help transferring my duties."
Nicole knew Amelia had made up her mind, so she didn't try to persuade her otherwise. After all, Nicole was the only one in the entire hospital who knew about Amelia's health condition.
"With our relationship, it's no trouble at all."
After Nicole finished speaking, she saw Amber walking out of the hospital room. She couldn't help but frown and said in a stern voice.
"Ms. Roberts, what are you doing here? Do you not realize the state of your health right now?"
Amber paused for a moment, her voice soft. "I just heard from the other patients that Ms. Davis is resigning. Is that true?"
Amelia turned around and saw Amber standing nearby, pale-faced, and calmly confirmed, "Yes."
Amber pursed her lips, disbelief evident in her eyes. "Why so suddenly?"
Amelia glanced at her coolly. "Don't worry. The issue you're dealing with isn't serious. I probably won't leave the hospital until after you've been discharged."
After all, transitioning out of the hospital was quite complex, typically requiring half a month to complete.
That's why Amelia had submitted her resignation letter in advance.
Amber was silent for a long time.
Nicole glanced at Mina, who was by Amber's side and said seriously, "Help her back to her bed. She just had her wound cleaned. It'd be better for her not to move around too much."
Mina thought Nicole, usually so gentle, seemed particularly irritable today.
So, she quickly helped Amber back to her room.
Nicole was now quite displeased with Amber, feeling that if it weren't for her, Frederick and Amelia wouldn't be getting a divorce.
And if that hadn't happened, Amelia wouldn’t be leaving General Hospital.
Amelia patted Nicole's shoulder softly and whispered, "I'm heading out. Let’s find time to have dinner together before I leave."
Hearing this, Nicole nodded and watched Amelia walk away.
As soon as Amelia returned to Rachel's place, she received a call from the Hastings Manor.
Amelia hesitated for a moment before answering.
Brittany's voice was aged and resigned, "Amelia, I heard from the director that you submitted your resignation?"
Amelia answered softly, "Yes, Grandma. I am sorry. I might have to break my promise."
Brittany was quiet for a long time, then said, "It's the Hastings family who should be apologizing for holding you back all these years. Now that you’ve made your decision, I respect it."
Amelia moved and replied, "Grandma, thank you for all the care you've given me over the years. Even though Frederick and I are divorced, you are still my grandma, and I'll visit when I can."
Brittany sighed, "It's Frederick's loss, missing out on such a good wife. He'll surely regret it someday."
Amelia bit her lip.
Frederick had decided on their divorce quite some time ago. However, at that time, Brittany was unwell and the Davis Group was facing problems, leading him to postpone it until now.
Amelia thought, "Frederick must have wanted to end this marriage for a long time. How could he possibly have any regrets?"
