Chapter 259 What Would His Reaction Be?
Amelia followed Frederick absentmindedly.
Frederick would take a few steps and then pause slightly to wait for her.
Frederick stood ahead, holding Anna in his arms. When Amelia reached his side, she said calmly, "Let's go. I won't get lost."
As soon as Amelia finished speaking, Frederick handed Anna over to her.
He suddenly said, "Hold the child for a moment."
Amelia was momentarily stunned, a hint of confusion flashing in her eyes, but she still reached out to take Anna.
Just as she took Anna, Frederick bent down.
Amelia looked down, and her expression became somewhat subtle.
Mrs. Swift's tombstone was at the top of the cemetery, so Amelia deliberately wore white sneakers today.
Her attention had been entirely on Anna and Frederick, and Amelia hadn't noticed that her shoelaces had come undone.
After handing the child to her, Frederick squatted down to tie her shoelaces.
Her foot instinctively pulled back, feeling a bit uncomfortable.
Frederick grabbed her ankle firmly, his voice low. He reminded Amelia, "Don't move. You're holding the child, and we're on steps. It wouldn't be pleasant if you fell."
Amelia quietly watched him and didn't move again.
Frederick truly left her at a loss for what to do.
At the cemetery.
Amber had arranged to meet Wendy at Mrs. Swift's cemetery early that morning.
For the past three years, Amber had come early every year to pay her respects to Mrs. Swift, hoping to encounter Frederick and let him know that she had always remembered his mother.
Last night, when Amber called Frederick, she found that she could no longer reach his number.
Amber understood that Frederick had probably blocked her.
The trip to Tideport City had become Amber's biggest regret in recent times.
If Amber hadn't gone to Tideport City, hadn't met Amelia, and the bracelet incident hadn't come to light, Frederick might still have had a favorable opinion of her.
They still had to visit Mr. Lakoff's home, and it was almost lunchtime. Amber couldn't stay here any longer and had to leave with Wendy.
Wendy noticed Amber's heavy heart and had heard that Amelia had returned to Kasfee, so Wendy asked, "How have things been between you and Mr. Hastings lately?"
Amber replied listlessly, "The same as always." In previous years, Frederick would have already arrived at the cemetery by this time, but this year, he hadn't shown up.
Wendy tried to comfort her. "Amber, you have to believe that you still hold a place in Mr. Hastings' heart."
Wendy added, "After all, it was Mr. Hastings who pursued you initially. No matter what, you were his first love and dream lover."
Listening to Wendy's words, Amber felt uncomfortably alone. Instead, a nameless fear and guilt spread within her.
Amber wasn't Frederick's dream lover.
Frederick's pursuit of her back then was just a matter of words.
When describing it to friends, Amber had embellished the story, making it sound incredibly romantic.
In reality, she had already sensed that Frederick might have mistaken her for someone else. Still, Amber didn't dare to think in that direction.
Amber had never considered studying medicine, yet Frederick often asked which medical school she wanted to apply to.
There were topics Amber had never understood, but Frederick would often bring them up with great interest.
When her relationship with Frederick began, she was always very cautious.
But later, Amber chose the finance industry, and Frederick always accommodated her, so she felt at ease.
Her initial caution began to fade, but the disparity in status and position still made her feel inferior.
When Amber learned of the Hastings Group's bankruptcy, she even felt a sense of inevitability.
She took Brittany's one million dollars, thinking that once she succeeded, she would repay Brittany with much more than one million dollars.
Amber imagined everything as a picture of her success, never considering the possibility of failure.
Confidently, she chose to leave when Frederick liked her the most, dreaming of becoming the best version of herself, returning to stand beside Frederick, and rebuilding the Hastings Group to shut Brittany's mouth.
"Dream lover?" Amber murmured.
In the past, she had felt inferior because of her family but became arrogant due to her relationship with Frederick.
If Amber hadn't whimsically tried to prove herself, there might never have been anything between Frederick and Amelia.
'Who could ever truly identify Frederick's ideal girl and dream lover? If I had obediently stayed by Frederick's side, the fake dream lover would have become real.' Amber pondered.
Amber's expression turned to one of regret.
Just as Wendy was about to say something, Amber, who was walking ahead, suddenly stopped and grabbed her arm tightly.
Wendy asked, "What's wrong?"
Following Amber's gaze, Wendy saw Frederick not far away, squatting in front of Amelia, tying her shoelaces. Wendy's eyes were filled with undisguised surprise.
Amber's body trembled slightly as she clutched Wendy's arm tighter.
During her relationship with Frederick, Amber had never received such treatment.
The fact that Frederick, such a lofty man, would stoop to tie Amelia's shoelaces!
Amber bit her lip hard, her eyes turning red.
Amelia felt a hostile gaze directed at her and looked up.
When Amelia saw Amber and Wendy, she showed no emotional reaction and glanced down at her now-tied shoelaces.
It was a beautiful bow.
As Frederick stood up, his eyes met Amelia's slightly inquisitive gaze. He furrowed his brows, seemingly understanding her thoughts, and explained, "Don't doubt it, you're the first."
Amelia was the first person he had ever bent down to tie shoelaces for.
Amelia looked up to meet his gaze, which was intense.
If Amber hadn't been standing not far away, she might have been quite moved.
But at that moment, all Amelia could think about was how Amber would react to seeing Frederick tie her shoelaces.
Amelia curled her lips slightly and replied with a sarcastic tone, "Well, I must be truly honored."
Frederick detected the sarcasm in her tone, his expression momentarily freezing.
He couldn't understand what he had done to displease Amelia and turned around in confusion, only to see Amber and Wendy standing not far away.
He immediately understood the issue.
Amber, seeing Frederick look over, bit her lip tightly, a glimmer of hope igniting in her heart.
But the next second, Frederick looked away, not sparing her another glance.
The hope in Amber's eyes wavered.
Amber watched as Frederick turned to face Amelia and said seriously, "Amelia, it's my fault for not making it clear to Amber that our relationship is over."
Amber changed her expression drastically, and the hope in her eyes flickered wildly before extinguishing.
Amber had no hope left.
