Chapter 351 A Thorn Between Them
Frederick gazed longingly at Amelia, but Amelia just gave a faint smile, signaling him to put Anna on the bed.
"Alright." Frederick reluctantly responded to Amelia, then bent down to place Anna on the small bed.
As Frederick gently laid Anna down, her eyes flickered open and her tiny hand clutched at his shirt. His heart soared with joy. "Anna, are you awake?" he asked softly, hopeful.
"Mm," she murmured, her fingers briefly tightening before relaxing. She turned over and fell back into a deep sleep almost instantly.
Frederick's deep blue eyes couldn't conceal his disappointment
Frederick had hoped Anna would help him out, but she was so exhausted that she fell asleep right away.
As Amelia stepped forward to adjust Anna's comforter, Frederick held up a hand to stop her.
"I'll take care of it," he whispered.
Amelia didn't push forward and instead stood quietly to the side, watching as Frederick carefully arranged the comforter for Anna.
What was supposed to be a simple task of tucking in the comforter seemed to take him forever.
"Mr. Hastings, are you deliberately stalling?" She asked calmly.
Frederick paused, turned to meet her gaze, and with a faint glimmer of amusement in his eyes, whispered, "You just realized?"
Amelia paused, looking into his eyes and fell silent.
Seeing the unyielding look in her eyes, Frederick sighed softly, resigning himself to the situation. He gave the comforter one last gentle pat before withdrawing his hand and standing in front of Amelia. "Then I'll be going," he said, though his reluctance was clear.
Amelia looked at Frederick standing before her, seeing his reluctance to leave, and said calmly. "Alright, be safe on your way back."
Frederick sighed inwardly, pulling Amelia into his arms with a tone full of helplessness. He grumbled, "Amelia, sometimes I really don't know what to do with you."
Amelia's expression remained unchanged as she retorted softly, "Mr. Hastings, there was a time when I didn't know what to do with you either."
Frederick was stung by Amelia's words, his arms stiffening slightly as he thought about his past attitude. Now, no matter how Amelia treated him, he could only swallow it.
Amelia quietly let Frederick hold her for a while. Seeing that he had no intention of letting go, she finally broke the silence. "Do you plan to hold me until dawn?"
Frederick chuckled softly, "If you allow it, I wouldn't mind."
Amelia pushed him gently, "Go back and rest early."
Hearing a hint of annoyance in her voice, Frederick released Amelia, bent down, and pressed a gentle kiss on her lips before stepping away.
As he reached the bedroom door, he paused briefly and turned back to look at Amelia.
As he reached the bedroom door, he paused slightly and turned to Amelia. He muttered, "I'm leaving."
Amelia looked at him and nodded. "Okay."
Seeing that she had no intention of asking him to stay, Frederick felt a sting in his heart and reluctantly turned back.
Amelia frowned slightly, her eyes showing a bit of confusion. Without saying a word, Frederick walked up to her and cupped her face, forcing her to look directly at him. "I'm leaving," he said, his voice heavy with unspoken longing.
Amelia nodded, her tone curt, "Go quickly."
Her words felt like a dagger to his heart. He leaned down and kissed her deeply. The kiss was intense, his emotions pouring into it, and it took him a long time to finally let go. Had Amelia not angrily pounded his chest, he might never have released her.
After ending the kiss, Frederick stepped out of the bedroom. This time, he didn't stop, walking straight to the staircase.
But just as Amelia yawned, planning to head to the bathroom to wash up, she saw him pause at the top of the stairs.
"I'm really leaving," he said, lingering for a moment longer, hoping for even a flicker of hesitation from her.
Amelia remained silent, her face stoic. Finally, with a flash of irritation in her eyes, she spat out, "Get lost."
Seeing the slight anger in her eyes, Frederick felt a bit of disappointment and walked downstairs.
Watching his figure disappear from her sight, Amelia rubbed her temples but couldn't help imagining Frederick suddenly poking his head out from the staircase. If he really did that, Amelia felt an uncontrollable urge to hit him.
Fortunately, the sound of a car engine leaving came from outside the balcony soon.
She stepped onto the balcony and saw Frederick's car driving away from the gate of the Davis Manor.
She watched for a while, then heard her phone beep with a message. She picked it up and saw it was from Frederick.
Frederick: [I'm really going home. I'll message you when I get there.]
Amelia looked at the message with a smile, and replied.
Amelia: [Okay.]
After replying to Frederick's message, she put down her phone and went to the bathroom to wash up. When she finally finished, the first thing she did was check her phone to see if Frederick had replied. She'd expected a message by now; he should have already reached the Hastings Manor or Spring Villa. Even the Pearl Building, close to the Davis Manor, wasn't far. Normally, there wouldn't be much traffic at this hour, so it puzzled her that he hadn't texted back.
Holding her phone, she looked at the chat with Frederick. After waiting for a while without a message from him, she put down her phone and went out of the bedroom to dry her hair.
Just as Frederick left the Davis Manor, Sebastian called.
"Frederick, I'm at Scott's bar. Come have a drink with me." Sebastian mumbled; his tone was already thick with drunkenness.
Before Frederick could respond, he continued. "When you and Amelia divorced, how many times I drank with you? You remember? Now that I'm down, you wouldn't leave me hanging, would you?"
Frederick frowned slightly and responded in a deep voice before hanging up. "Send me the location. I'll come over."
As soon as the call ended, Sebastian sent the location. Frederick glanced at it and drove straight there.
At the bar, Sebastian was taken directly to the VIP room on the second floor by the waiter. Sebastian was sitting on the sofa, drinking sullenly. Scott was sitting next to Sebastian, while Amber was sitting on the sofa opposite Scott.
She looked haggard, her hands tightly clasped together, visibly nervous.
When she saw Frederick enter the room, Amber's face lit up with joy. She released her hands and stood up from the sofa. She said, "Frederick, have a seat."
Seeing Amber, Frederick frowned, his gaze cold as it swept over her and landed on Sebastian.
Sebastian looked up at Frederick and gestured for him to sit.
Frederick made no move to sit, standing to the side, looking down at them. He said faintly, "Sebastian, what do you mean by that?"
Hearing Frederick's slightly cold tone, Sebastian glanced at Amber and responded calmly. "I didn't mean anything by it. I didn't call her here."
Frederick squinted slightly at Scott. He had always considered Scott a good friend, but Scott had been revealing his whereabouts to Amber for years.
Amber couldn't cause much trouble, so he didn't question why Scott did that.
However, since he decided to reconcile with Amelia, he no longer disclosed his whereabouts to Scott and rarely mentioned it to Sebastian.
He knew clearly that Amber was a thorn between him and Amelia.
