Chapter 38 No Comment

Amelia had just returned from visiting a patient's room when she saw Amber rushing in.

Amelia raised an eyebrow quizzically and set down her cup, watching Amber with calm eyes.

Amber bit her lip, looking at Amelia. "Ms. Davis, did Frederick's wife come to see you earlier?"

Earlier?

Amelia furrowed her brow, then remembered Rachel had just left the hospital.

It must have been something Rachel said when she ran into Amber that now had Amber so desperate for answers.

Nicole, who had been curiously leaning against the door of Amelia's office, couldn't help but let out a chuckle when she heard Amber's question.

Amber's expression tensed, turning towards the doorway where Nicole stood.

Nicole's smile faded a bit. "Sorry, I couldn't help myself."

Amber, feeling a mix of annoyance and determination, closed the door of Amelia's office firmly, leaving Nicole on the other side, cut off from their conversation.

Nicole lost the opportunity to satisfy her curiosity and decided to leave, planning to return later and ask Amelia directly.

Amelia looked at Amber calmly, took a seat, sighed deeply, and said, "Ms. Roberts, I've told you before not to come to me with inquiries about Frederick's personal matters. It would be best if you went directly to him."

Amber bit her lip, frustrated.

Amelia withdrew her gaze from Amber. "Ms. Roberts, I'm very busy. Unless you're unwell, please try not to disturb me."

Amber took a deep breath and spoke softly, "I used to think that Frederick's wife was you."

Amelia remained silent.

Amber looked at Amelia earnestly. "But just now, downstairs, I met a woman who said she recognized me from a photo she’d seen, which made me think. Maybe she is Frederick’s wife."

Amelia raised an eyebrow and said indifferently, "If you want to know whether she's Frederick's wife, why don't you just ask him? Unless, did you ask him, and he refused to tell you?"

"I searched through Frederick's phone gallery, but I didn’t find a single picture of her," Amber admitted.

Amelia paused, her expression becoming restrained. Why would Frederick's phone contain her picture? During their three years of marriage, even their official wedding pictures were never taken, with Frederick always citing his busy work schedule as an excuse.

Amber's face displayed her sense of grievance.

"I heard that the woman and Frederick are from equally influential families. She seemed rather aggressive – not someone easily handled. I'm afraid she might do something to harm me. Given my current situation with Frederick, I'm perceived as a home wrecker."

Fear flickered in Amber's eyes as she spoke.

"People from prestigious families are cunning and manipulative. Ms. Davis, could you please help me by telling me if she really is Frederick's wife so I can be prepared?" Amber asked.

Amelia massaged her temples, wondering what Rachel had told Amber to cause her such concern.

"Don't worry about it," Amelia reassured her. "She won't bother with you."

Rachel's schemes were reserved for the cutthroat world of business, and even when Sebastian had been unfaithful with another woman, Rachel hadn't stooped to targeting her. She simply didn't consider Amber worth the effort.

Amber looked at Amelia pleadingly, her voice tentative as she asked, "Could you at least tell me the identity of the woman?"

Amelia remained expressionless and glanced at Amber. "I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can disclose."

Stunned, Amber froze, realizing she was at an impasse.
Amelia glanced at the firmly closed office door and said, "If you're not feeling unwell, I need you to leave."

A flicker of disappointment passed over Amber's face.

"Yeah, I guess I'm just another patient to Ms. Davis. We're not on friendly enough terms for me to ask about personal matters. That was presumptuous of me.

"Sorry to have disturbed you at work."

With these words, she stood up from her chair and slowly made her way out of Amelia's office.

The shock and blow from Rachel had been so heavy that, for a moment, Amber had completely forgotten the reason she came to the hospital.

After stepping into the elevator, Amber suddenly fainted.

Amelia was working on some documents when she suddenly heard cries of alarm from outside.

A nurse quickly walked in.

"Ms. Davis, Amber has fainted."

Amelia furrowed her brow, rose from her chair, and started towards the door, not forgetting to order, "Contact her family."

The nurse nodded in acknowledgment.

Amber listed Frederick as the contact for the family, so naturally, the nurse called Frederick to come over.

Amelia conducted a thorough examination of Amber.

She found that Amber's wound was torn, and there was an infection accompanied by a high fever.

Amelia's expression grew serious.

When Amber was discharged, her wounds had been healing well, but within a day, an infection had set in.

Amelia was already feeling a headache, thinking about how Amber had neglected her recovery, visiting a cemetery and even attending a social gathering the previous day.

When Amber woke up, she saw Amelia conducting the examination.

Feeling weak, she apologized, "I'm sorry, Ms. Davis, for causing you more trouble."

Amelia responded stoically, "Ms. Roberts, you might need to be hospitalized for a while.

"Your wound has an infection. We need to clean and possibly debride it."

She paused, her expression turning grave.

"If you don't take care of yourself, and the infection spreads internally, it could compromise your fertility in the future."

Hearing this, Amber's face went pale just as she noticed Frederick standing at the doorway of her room.

"Frederick, why are you here?"

The man at the door shifted his gaze onto Amelia.

Dressed in her work attire, Amelia was focused. Hearing Amber, she glanced toward Frederick.

Their gazes met in the air—calm, causing no ripples.

"Ms. Roberts fainted at the hospital. You were listed as her emergency contact, so we had to call you," Amelia explained.

Frederick nodded slightly.

"What's wrong?"

In a low voice, Amber replied, "The wound is infected."

With a frown, Frederick stepped into the room.

Amelia softly gave a few instructions and then turned to leave.
Amelia returned to her office and called for Amber's head nurse to prepare medication. As the nurse grabbed the prescription and headed out, she caught sight of Frederick approaching with a grim expression, looking to be in a terrible mood. Worried that he might cause trouble for Amelia, the nurse hesitated, glancing back at her with concern. Amelia noticed her colleague's intent and offered a reassuring smile, "You go ahead and take care of Ms. Roberts' medication. I'll explain things to Mr. Hastings."

The nurse nodded and left the office. Once her colleague was out of sight, Amelia's smile faded, and she adopted a more serious demeanor. "Ms. Roberts has an infection at the site of her wound that needs cleaning. As for other complications, further examination is needed. Considering her current condition, we recommend she remain hospitalized for another week of observation." Her tone was even and professional as if Frederick were just another patient's family member.
