Chapter 49 She Said, Even if You Admit You're Wrong, This Marriage Is Over
Frederick's gaze turned frosty as he watched Amelia's determined stride away. Felix, who was standing at the side, had a heart pounding like thunder, afraid that Frederick's anger might lash out at him.
Luckily for Felix, Frederick merely watched Amelia's retreating figure before turning his gaze away. His expression darkened, and then he resumed his usual indifference.
"The agreement is in my office drawer. Take it to her," said Frederick to Felix, his voice devoid of warmth.
Felix, momentarily stunned, quickly nodded his assent. "Okay."
Amber looked on, confused. In the past, she might have dared to ask about the agreement, but Frederick's mood was visibly somber and displeased, intimidating her from enquiring. She really didn't understand what kind of agreement had been made between Amelia and Frederick.
Amber was also wary of Amelia. If Frederick got a divorce from his "wife," given Brittany's fondness for Amelia, she feared Amelia would be the top candidate to become Frederick's next wife. Amber had suffered so much humiliation in hopes of being with Frederick. She couldn't stand another failure. She would let go of her past pride and everything else just to keep Frederick by herself.
Frederick left Hastings Group and headed straight to his car. As Amber was about to get in, the car started without her. The window rolled down and there was Frederick, his face cold as ice, "I won't be free to see Mr. Lakoff today, you go by yourself."
Patrick Lakoff was Emily's mentor, who had advanced in years. Amber knew that Frederick made it a point to visit Patrick every year on this day. So she had specially waited in his office to accompany him.
After he spoke, he didn't give her a chance to respond. He just drove away.
Amber's body stiffened slightly, her spirits plummeting to rock bottom.
She stood there dazed for a long time, then clenched her hands tightly together.
That evening, Amelia received the divorce papers sent by Felix.
The papers remained unsigned by Frederick.
Amelia glanced over the terms briefly and neatly signed her own name.
"Why hasn't he signed?" she asked herself after writing her name and putting away the pen.
Felix wore an awkward expression.
Barry had given the papers to Frederick three days earlier.
They didn't understand why Frederick hadn't signed yet.
But they couldn't just say to Amelia's face that Frederick probably didn't want a divorce.
"These papers were rushed out after Mr. Cole finished work, and Mr. Hastings left the office early this afternoon, so he didn't sign," Felix offered an excuse.
Amelia thought of Frederick leaving the Hastings Group with Amber that afternoon, and her gaze grew distant.
Felix respectfully collected the papers.
"Mrs. Hastings, Ms. Rachel Davis, I'll be leaving now."
"Sorry to disturb you," he added.
Rachel sat aside, her eyes cold, and she remarked leisurely, "I wonder if Mr. Hastings doesn't want a divorce?"
Hearing this, Felix cast a pleading glance toward Rachel.
Rachel scoffed, "Please ask Mr. Hastings, when you return, ask him if he has fallen in love with Amelia?"
"If he's willing to admit his mistake and stay away from Amber, it's not like there's no chance for them."
Amelia furrowed her brows, cutting Rachel off immediately.
"No."
"Even if he admits his mistake, I still want the divorce."
Surprised by Amelia's firm stance, Rachel stopped talking, her eyes hinting at scheming thoughts.
Felix's expression was subtle, and he left hastily, unsure of how to convey this to Frederick.
In the Pearl Building, Felix delivered the signed divorce papers to Frederick.
Frederick sat on the large sofa, holding the divorce papers and looking at Amelia's signature with a cold gaze.
"Did she say anything?" he asked.
Felix hesitated.
"Just a little."
Frederick's brows knit together, "What did she say?"
Felix hung his head low, repeating what Rachel had said.
Frederick's brows were knotted, his face clearly displeased.
Taking a small step back, Felix added, "Mrs. Hastings seems quite determined about the divorce."
"She said, even if you admit your mistakes, the marriage must end."
As soon as he finished, a piercing gaze shot his way.
Felix instantly lowered his head even more.
"She sure is in a hurry," he muttered softly, "seems like it."
Frederick's face remained stern.
He fought back the urge to tell Felix to get lost, pulled out his pen, and quickly signed his name on the back of the agreement. He then handed it to Felix with a swift motion.
"Take it."
Felix hurriedly took hold of the document.
"Mr. Hastings, aren't you going to keep a copy?"
Frederick's expression was unyielding.
With an awkward smile, Felix could only take both copies of the agreement, temporarily managing Frederick's portion for him.
"Mr. Hastings, I'll be going now."
He said softly, and seeing no reaction from the man seated on the sofa, he stepped out.
At the base of the Pearl Building, Felix had just stepped out when he spotted Amber sitting on the steps nearby.
He paused, considering pretending not to see her, but Amber called out to him.
"Mr. Cox."
Felix forced a professional smile, "Ms. Roberts, what a coincidence, what brings you here?"
Amber glanced at the document bag in Felix's hand and asked softly.
"Mr. Cox, is that the agreement Ms. Davis is pressing Frederick to give her?"
Felix was formal, "Ms. Roberts, I apologize, but that is confidential. I cannot disclose any information."
Amber bit her lip, silent for a few seconds. Just as she was about to speak, Felix found an excuse and quickly walked away.
The next day.
Rachel drove Amelia to the hospital for her shift.
Passing by the Pearl Building, they saw Frederick exiting the building.
Amber was standing on the stairs, appearing to wait for Frederick.
Amelia's hand tightened slightly at her side, then relaxed.
Rachel, too, noticed Amber and Frederick, her eyes darkening as she sped up the car.
Frederick descended the stairs and saw Amber, his expression cool.
"Why are you here?"
Amber bit her lip again, "Frederick, I've been waiting here for you all night."
Last night she called Frederick, but he hadn't answered the phone.
She felt a huge sense of crisis within her.
She always felt that if she didn't take some action at this time, she might fade from his life.
So she had waited here all night, laying aside all her dignity.
"Frederick..."
Frederick looked indifferent, his gaze cold as he looked at her haggard, unnaturally pale face.
"What you're doing is meaningless."
Amber's body stiffened, her eyes glassy as she stared at Frederick, her complexion so white it was almost unnatural.
