Chapter 8 He Has Something, No Need to Wait

Frederick continued, "We are not divorced yet!"
Amelia, petite and slender, was tightly enveloped by his suit jacket, looking even thinner.
Frederick clenched the jacket forcefully, staring at her with a hint of anger in his eyes.

No man would allow his wife to flirt with another man in front of him. Today, Amelia's mistake had crossed Frederick's bottom line.
"I understand," she replied.

Amelia pulled at the suit jacket slightly, and Frederick, with a frown, released his grip.
She felt a bit helpless. She lowered her eyes, not wanting to see the expression on his face, and walked past him.

Her casual tone irritated Frederick and he yanked at his tie, turning to Mary with a stern command, "Make her something to eat!"

At tonight’s gathering, Amelia had focused on promoting the Davis family's property and hadn't eaten all evening.
Mary quickly replied, "Right away, Mr. Hastings."

Amelia went upstairs to the bedroom, tossed Frederick's jacket onto the sofa, and then headed straight for the bathroom.
By the time she emerged, Mary had prepared some food.

"Mrs. Hastings, Mr. Hastings mentioned that you hadn't eaten much tonight, so he asked me to cook for you."
Amelia paused for a moment, then stepped out of the bedroom.

She was pregnant now. Even if she wasn't hungry, she needed to eat.
When Amelia came down, Frederick had already left.
She didn't ask about him.

Amber's surgery was scheduled for three days later.
As Ralap was formulating the surgical plan, Frederick stood by, listening intently.

Amelia was directly appointed by Ralap to be the lead surgeon for Amber's operation. "Ms. Davis," he said confidently, "ever since you joined the hospital, you've performed thousands of similar surgeries. Your experience is vast. I trust that you will successfully complete this surgery for Ms. Roberts.

"Later this year, during performance evaluations, I'll share some of my experience with you."

Amelia frowned slightly. She closed the patient file she had been reviewing and looked up at Frederick before speaking slowly, "I'm prepared to take on this surgery. But Mr. Hastings, please stay back. I'd like to have a word with you in private."

Amber sat quietly beside Frederick, her face the picture of innocence. Confused and a little lost when Amelia asked for Fredrick to stay behind, she asked, "What about me?"

Amelia didn't respond.

Fredrick gave Amber a reassuring look and said, "Go ahead and wait for me outside."

She nodded, slowly rising from her seat, and reluctantly left the room.

Ralap and the rest of the medical staff also exited, leaving only Frederick and Amelia in the large conference room.

Amelia was dressed in her pristine white lab coat, her hair meticulously pinned up at the back of her head. She exuded an air of dignity and seriousness.

Frederick glanced at her briefly before looking away.

"What did you want to talk about?" he asked.

Amelia perused Amber's medical report. The difficulty of Amber's surgery wasn't great, and she couldn't grasp why Frederick insisted on her involvement.

Yet, since they were so persistent, it was only natural for Amelia to seize the opportunity to lay out her terms.

"I'm willing to perform the surgery for Ms. Roberts, but I have a condition," she said confidently.

Frederick's gaze lifted to meet hers. Before she could state her terms, he asked coolly, "Davis Group?"

She nodded.

He looked at Amelia, his smile slight but insincere, a hint of mockery lurking beneath.

"Ms. Davis, you think too highly of yourself," he said.

Amelia wanted his help for the Davis Group in return for just a minor surgery.

Unruffled by his sarcasm, she looked down demurely, her face expressionless.

"Mr. Hastings, it seems you're the one who's overvaluing the situation. You're the one insisting that I operate on Ms. Roberts. I imagine you wouldn't deny such a simple request."

With that, Amelia rose from her chair and exited the conference room.

Amber had been waiting just outside the whole time. As Amelia emerged, Amber greeted her with a smile.

"Ms. Davis..."
Amelia gave Amber a smile, but it was one remarkably devoid of sincerity.

"If Mr. Hastings really loves you, he will certainly agree to my terms. Ms. Roberts, you don't need to worry too much."

Frederick's voice came from behind Amelia.

"Fine. I accept your terms. If anything goes wrong with her surgery in three days, you should know there will be consequences."

Frederick gave her a cold glance.

Amelia said with a smile, "Mr. Hastings, rest assured. Not only can I ensure Ms. Roberts' surgery is a complete success, but I can also save her fertility so the two of you can start working on having lots of babies soon!"

Frederick looked at her with an impatient and complex expression. Then he walked away.

Amber paused. She glanced at Amelia, then back at Frederick, and followed him as he left.

"Frederick, what terms did you agree to with Ms. Davis?"

Amelia thought to herself, "Frederick must really love her!"

She watched their retreating figures with a self-mocking laugh, then turned and went back to her office.

She had just sat down when Rachel called her.

"I heard from Daniel that he took you to a party last night. The contract for the land in the southern suburbs has been drafted. Thanks for your hard work."

Rachel's tone was a bit softer than usual when she spoke to Amelia. Amelia sipped on her red lips and gave a quiet "hmm" in response.

Rachel fell silent for a few seconds before speaking again, "How have you and Frederick been doing lately?"

Amelia thought for a moment, took a slow breath, and said in a drawn-out tone, "We're alright. We don't need to divorce right now."

Rachel let out a cold laugh.

"I heard Frederick's first love has left the country. He has always thought that you colluded with Mrs. Brittany to drive them apart. He can't hold a grudge against his grandmother. The only person he can target is you."

Rachel's words were sharp, and Amelia felt a twinge of heartache; her situation was suddenly awkward.

"Rachel, I..."

But before she could continue, Rachel interrupted her.

"You haven't managed to make him fall in love with you in these three years. Now that woman is back, and your situation will only get more difficult."

"I've found you a professional divorce attorney who is excellent in his field. If you lose a man, you can find another one, but if you lose your money, it's truly gone. Amelia, get a grip."

"There are still matters to attend to at the company. I have another engagement to go to soon. I have to hang up."

Rachel didn't give Amelia a chance to respond and ended the call.
Amelia sighed, put away her phone, and rubbed her forehead. She felt irritable, but Rachel's words made so much sense that Amelia couldn't even find an excuse to argue.

She slapped her cheeks to perk herself up and then delved back into her work.

In the afternoon, Amelia had two surgeries to perform, and she needed to be fully immersed in them.

Fortunately, the surgeries were not particularly difficult. After finishing in the operating room, her assistant offered her a bottle of energy-boosting drink.

Amelia waved her hand to decline. Those kinds of stimulant drinks weren't good for the baby.

She had made up her mind. She was going to keep the baby, but she was going to get a divorce.

She walked slowly toward her office. From a distance, she could see Amber sitting in the chair outside her office door.

Amber looked relaxed and, despite wearing a hospital gown, showed no sign of illness. In fact, she appeared vibrant.

No wonder Frederick was so fond of her.

Upon seeing Amelia, Amber immediately smiled. She stood up from the chair and walked toward Amelia. With a slight blush on her cheeks, Amber said somewhat bashfully, "Ms. Davis, I've asked other doctors before. They all said that my surgery might affect my future fertility.

"You told Frederick earlier that you could ensure that after my surgery, I could get pregnant smoothly. Is that true?"
