Chapter 391 Rachel Was Very Wary of Him

Rachel hadn't been in good health lately, and she recently had a high fever. So, seeing her face unusually flushed at this moment naturally gave Amelia cause for concern.

After applying medicine to Charles's hand, Amelia immediately checked on Rachel, unable to hide the worry in her eyes.

Rachel's expression was slightly awkward, but she managed to respond to Amelia's concern without a hint of panic. "I'm fine."

Amelia, however, wasn't buying it. Just a few days ago, Rachel had a persistent high fever but kept insisting that she was fine and continued to handle business at work every day. Rachel's body wasn't made of steel; she couldn't withstand such repeated strain.

Amelia felt Rachel's forehead with her hand; it wasn't very hot. Still, Rachel's cheeks were too flushed, making her uneasy. "Let me take your temperature," Amelia said seriously, rummaging through the first aid kit for a thermometer.

Rachel's eyes showed a hint of helplessness as she said, softly, "Maybe my face is flushed because I had some wine at lunch."

As soon as Rachel finished speaking, she heard a low chuckle from Charles.

Both Amelia and Rachel looked at him. Charles smiled politely. "Sorry, I thought of something amusing and couldn't help it." He gestured for Amelia to continue. "Ms. Amelia, please continue checking on Ms. Rachel."

A trace of doubt flashed in Amelia's eyes before she turned her focus back on Rachel.

Rachel knew exactly what Charles was referring to, and her face turned even redder. Charles maliciously wanted to see her squirm with embarrassment in front of Amelia. Rachel took a deep breath to calm herself down.

After finding the thermometer, Amelia took Rachel's temperature. It was relatively normal, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off as Rachel seemed more flushed than before. She frowned in confusion.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. Rachel seized the opportunity to extricate herself from the situation. "I'll get it," she said, hastily.

Amelia nodded. As she watched Rachel get up quickly, seemingly without any discomfort, she finally felt a bit relieved.

Rachel opened the door and saw Ian standing there with a respectful and polite smile. "Ms. Davis," he said, handing over the garment bag that he was holding.

Rachel glanced at the bag and then took it from him.

"Thank you," Ian said.

Rachel politely responded, "You're welcome."

She was about to invite Ian in, but he interrupted her. "I have other matters to attend to, so I won't take up any more of your time, Ms. Davis. Goodbye."

Rachel nodded and watched Ian leave before closing the door.

She held Charles's clothes in her hand.

Hearing the sound, Charles got up from the couch and walked toward Rachel.

"Thank you, Ms. Davis," he said, taking the garment bag from her.

Rachel let go and said, "Mr. Wright, you may go and get changed."

Charles nodded and walked toward Rachel's dressing room.

Amelia watched this scene unfold, unable to hide the surprise in her eyes. She shifted her gaze between Rachel and Charles, who seemed oddly familiar with Rachel’s place.

"Rachel, he..." Amelia began. She couldn't hide her confusion. How did Charles know Rachel's place so well? If she remembered correctly, Charles hadn't spent much time with Rachel before, and him being a representative of Yaradia Enterprises only added to the strangeness of the familiarity.

Rachel maintained her composure. "The city is organizing an outing for Yaradia Enterprises' representatives this afternoon, and I have to accompany them," she explained. "Is Mr. Hastings still at the Davis Manor?"

Rachel's words seemed to say so much without actually conveying anything. Amelia assumed that her reticence was due to Charles's presence. "Yes, he's still at home with Anna," she replied, following Rachel's lead and looking away from the direction of the dressing room.

Amelia then frowned. "Is he going to the event with you this afternoon?" Muttering, she added, "I'll need to hurry back, then. Dad has a fishing trip scheduled with some friends, and Susan hasn't been feeling well so she needs to go to the hospital for a check-up."

After the lunch meeting, Frederick had gone straight back to the Davis Manor. When Amelia left, he was still in the living room with Anna.

If Frederick was going out with Rachel this afternoon, no one would be there to look after Anna, so Amelia had to hurry back.

Seeing her sister rushing to leave, Rachel didn't explain what was going on and got up to see her off at the door. "Drive safely," she said.

Amelia replied, "I know. You take care of yourself, don't work too hard. I'll leave the first aid kit here; you might need it."

Amelia had wanted to ask Rachel about her situation with Charles but stopped herself as she thought it wouldn't be good if Charles overheard them talking about him behind his back.

Rachel noticed Amelia's hesitation and was organizing her thoughts for an answer. Fortunately, Amelia didn't press the issue and stepped into the elevator. After the elevator doors closed, Rachel went back into her apartment.

Charles quickly changed into his hiking clothes. This time, unlike in the morning, he didn't casually walk out of the dressing room but straightened himself up before coming out.

He wanted to leave a better impression on Rachel's family. After straightening himself up, he walked out of the dressing room, only to find that Amelia had already left.

Rachel was sitting alone on the living room couch, organizing the items in the first aid kit.

Charles walked over to help her. He glanced at the time and gently said, "You should go change; we don't have much time."

As Charles spoke, he took the disinfectant from Rachel's hand and placed it in the first aid kit.

Rachel quietly watched Charles organizing the first aid kit. She felt strange. She and Charles had yet to interact much, but  for some reason, they seemed to get along rather well. When they were together, it felt like they had known each other for many years, with a lot of tacit understanding between them.

She pressed her lips together, trying to compose herself. "Don't trouble yourself with that; I'll handle it."

As Rachel spoke, she reorganized the items in the kit, then closed it and placed it in a side cabinet.

Listening to her polite words, Charles's eyes narrowed slightly, with a hint of helplessness in his gaze. It seemed that Rachel was still very guarded against him.
