Chapter 462 The Mastermind Hiding in the Shadows
"Alright," Amelia said to Rachel before ending the call. There was a knock at the door; Susan was outside, asking her to come down for dinner. She got up and left her room.
In the dining room, as she ate, Casey hovered nearby, which annoyed Amelia. "Casey, I don't need you here. Go take care of something else," Amelia said, trying to keep her cool.
Casey gave an awkward smile. "Everything else is done. I'll just stay here with you."
Amelia looked up and asked softly, "Casey, is there something you want to say?"
Casey's expression shifted slightly. "No, Ms. Davis. I don't have anything to say. I'll leave now."
With that, Casey turned and left the dining room. As her footsteps faded, Amelia's frown deepened. "Casey," she called out.
The maid stopped and turned around with a smile. "Ms. Davis, do you need anything else?"
Amelia shook her head lightly. "No, nothing." She resumed eating, gripping her fork tighter as Casey, confused but not wanting to make a scene, left the room.
After lunch, Amelia headed upstairs. Anna had woken up from her nap and lit up when she saw Amelia as Susan dressed her.
"Mommy, Grandpa said you went to see Daddy. Did you?" Anna asked eagerly.
Amelia picked Anna up. "Yes, I did."
"Is Daddy coming home for dinner tonight?" Anna asked, her hopeful eyes piercing Amelia's heart.
Amelia shook her head. Anna's hopeful expression dimmed, and her smile faded. "Why isn't he coming home again?" Anna sighed, clearly upset that Frederick wasn't coming to Davis Manor.
Amelia gently rubbed her head and explained, "He's too busy with work, so he doesn't have time."
"But when will Mommy marry Daddy then?" Anna's sudden question caught Amelia off guard. She hadn't expected it.
"Sweetie, we might not be able to get married right now," Amelia quickly composed herself and replied.
Anna frowned, looking confused. "Is it because Daddy is too busy?"
Amelia nodded, going along with Anna's explanation. After all, Anna hadn't yet adjusted to Frederick's sudden coldness toward them.
Anna muttered, "Daddy used to want to marry Mommy the most. Now he doesn't even have time to get married?"
Anna's expression was very confused, struggling to understand and accept Frederick's change in attitude.
"Daddy said that after he marries Mommy, he can always stay at home and sleep at home at night," Anna said, her expression heavy.
Looking at her little face, Amelia's mood also became heavy. She didn't know when Frederick had said this to Anna. She couldn't handle Anna's slightly worried gaze.
She rubbed her temples and forced a smile. "Marriage requires choosing a good day. We need to get engaged first and then have the wedding. Anna, we can't just get married casually."
"Okay, Mommy. We can't be casual about it," Anna said earnestly, her innocent words bringing a small smile to Amelia's lips.
Susan reached out and took Anna from Amelia's arms, saying softly, "Ms. Davis, you should go rest in your room for a while. I'll take Ms. Anna to play in the yard downstairs."
Amelia nodded. "Okay. Be careful."
Then she suddenly remembered something and grabbed Susan, whispering, "The new batch of servants at home, don't let them get too close to Anna, especially Casey."
Casey's behavior today made Amelia feel watched,so she was extra cautious with Anna.
Susan got the message and replied seriously, "Ms. Davis, don't worry. I'm in charge of Ms. Anna's daily needs. I won't let anyone get too close to her."
Amelia's eyes stayed heavy, and her expression didn't relax at all. Even though the Davis Manor seemed peaceful, Amelia could already feel that this silent war had crept from the Davis Group into their home.
Rachel came back to the Davis Manor late, looking exhausted. Amelia came out of her room immediately. "Rachel, you're back?"
Rachel nodded, her fatigue showing. "I need to talk about Frederick..."
"Rachel, I don't want to talk about him," Amelia cut in, her voice strained. She glanced downstairs with her eyes.
Just then, the sound of a door opening caught their attention. Casey stepped out from the servant's quarters, her eyes locking onto the sisters.
Rachel got the hint, almost forgetting Casey was there.
Her eyes turned cold, and her tone got serious. "Whether you want to talk about it or not, you need to face the issue. If Frederick insists on taking Anna's custody, we might not stand a chance. You know what he's capable of."
Amelia's grip on Rachel's hand tightened, her lips pressed into a thin line. "I understand."
"Good. I'm too tired for this tonight. Let's discuss our strategy another day," Rachel said, giving Amelia's hand a quick squeeze before heading to her room. Amelia watched her sister walk away, then noticed Casey lurking in the shadows. She glared at Casey, who quickly retreated back into her room. The tension in the hallway stayed thick even after she disappeared.
In Rachel's room, Amelia finally voiced her concerns. "There's something off about Casey."
Today, she had checked the security footage and found Casey acting suspiciously, often pretending to pass by the study. Her job mainly involved the kitchen, so she had no reason to be near the study. Moreover, whenever she had the chance today, she was always around Amelia, as if trying to gather information.
So much had happened lately that Amelia had to stay on guard.
After all, she wasn't the type to easily open up to others, so Casey's behavior naturally drew her attention.
Rachel watched Amelia carefully analyze Casey's actions and felt a sense of relief.
Over the years, Rachel had often regretted protecting Amelia too well, leaving her without sharpness and edge. Now, Amelia could finally sense potential dangers around her and take precautions. Rachel no longer had to worry that if she became too busy to help, Amelia wouldn't be able to protect herself and Anna.
Amelia saw Rachel just smiling at her without saying a word and immediately felt anxious.
"Rachel."
Rachel met her worried gaze, a slight smirk forming on her lips, her eyes sharpening.
"Sending someone to the Davis Manor, huh? Let's see who's really pulling the strings from the shadows."
